The three-year letterman from Daphne, Ala. has started all 28 games each of the past two+ seasons, and led or tied for the team lead in sacks in 2009 and 2010. Cotton has registered at least one sack in four of five games this season. Cotton made four tackles in last week’s game against the Braves. Cotton is tied for second on the team in tackles (32), leads in both sacks (5.0) and tackles for loss (6.5), and has one forced fumble. WREAKING HAVOC DE Raymond Heningburg had one of the best games of his career in last week’s win over Alcorn State. Heningburg tied a career highwith six tackles and had 2.5 tackles for loss in the game. The sophomore from Mobile is second among defensive linemen in tackles (17) and has 3.5 tackles for loss, is tied for the team lead with three quarterback hits, and has one sack and one fumble recovery. THE BAKER DID IT: LB Leland Baker has been an impact player in his first three starts for the Hornets. Making the transition from defensive end in which he played in high school to college linebacker, the Birmingham, Ala. product is feeling comfortable in his role as a sideline-to-sideline player. After making 12 tackles (2.0 TFL) and 2.0 sacks against Grambling State two weeks ago, Baker made nine tackles and the game-clinching interception at Jackson State with nine seconds remaining. In last week’s game vs. Alcorn State, Baker again had nine tackles (2.0 TFL) and one sack. Baker leads the team in tackles (37), and is second in tackles for loss (6.0) and sacks (4.0) and is tied for the team lead the team in quarterback hits (three). THE SILENT FORCE LB Demarques Taylor has quietly been a stablizing force in the middle of the Hornets’ defense. The two-year starter and junior from Jacksonville, Fla. tied a season-high with seven tackles (0.5 TFL) against Alcorn State last week. Taylor is fourth on the team in tackles with 24 (w/2.5 TFL) and 1.0 sacks this season. BRING THE WOOD Sophomore LB Brandon Slater has shown a knack for jarring the ball loose from ball carries this season. In five games, Slater has a team-high three forced fumbles and is tied for the Hornet lead with two fumble recoveries. The Montgomery, Ala. native is tied for second on the team among linebackers with 17 stops and is tied for third on the team in tackles for loss (3.5) and also has 1.5 sacks. INSPECTOR LEE CB Saeed Lee has been a ball-hawking player for the Hornets’ defense. At Jackson State two weeks ago, Lee returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown in the 21-14 win. Last week vs. Alcorn State, Lee made six tackles, including two for loss, with one sack and two interceptions. The junior from Miami, Fla. made both picks in the end zone to thwart Braves’ drives. Lee has 17 tackles (including 3.0 TFL), is second on the team in interceptions (three), leads in pass breakups (seven), and has one sack and one fumble recovery.
