In the case of Sesarma haematoche, female crabs migrate from land to sea to release the larvae at the high tide of syzygy night. Artificial structures along coastal areas are being obstacles for the migration of land crabs and causing synchronized roadkills on coastal roads during breeding migration. In this research, we compared the sex ratios of crab populations in coastal areas with coastal roads and uninhabited island areas with no road. The proportion of females in inland habitats with coastal roads was significantly smaller than island habitats. In particular, females are exposed to the risk of annually repeated roadkills, and the proportion of females decreases rapidly with their growth. If this tendency is general for land crab populations in the coastal areas with roads, significant road mortality of female land crabs during breeding migration can lead to severe population decline in coastal areas. Therefore, it is necessary to take an action to save land crabs crossing coastal roads. The crab moults nocturnally in small freshwater pools, and newly moulted crabs and cast integuments were used to assess moult increment. Males reached a larger size (max. CW 36 mm, n = 272) than females (max. CW 33 mm, n = 164): from 22 mm CW males increasingly dominated the population. Size at maturity was estimated at 17.5 mm CW. The percentage moult increment averaged 11.5% in males (5.5-19%, n = 153) and 13.9% in females (7-23%, n = 72). Female increment exceeded male increment for all overlapping size classes. The larger size of mature males, despite a smaller percentage increment, is explained by a higher post-puberty moult frequency. Of the moulting crabs, 25% of males and 38% of females had one or more missing or regenerating peraeopods. In both sexes this reduced the percentage increment, more so the larger number of limbs affected. The moulting conditions for C. haematocheir are not ideal, with constraints in relation to calcium supplies, and shelter. So the moult increments are unsurprisingly less than those of shallow water marine crabs moulting in an optimal environment, but larger than those of land crabs moulting without access to standing water. -

Morphologically, the genus is heterogeneous and has been postulated to constitute a polyphyletic taxon. In the present study, most species of Parasesarma are re-evaluated phylogenetically, using mitochondrial and nuclear molecular markers. The results show that the majority of the examined species cluster consistently with the type species Parasesarma plicatum. However, some species, among them the tree-climbing Parasesarma leptosoma, are clearly separated from this main clade of Parasesarma, forming a second stable monophyletic group, distinct from other known genera. Based on these results, and with additional support by morphological diagnoses highlighting consistent differences between the two species groups, we propose a new genus for the species clustering around P. leptosoma, proposing the new name Leptarma gen. nov. Four species of the family Atyidae and two species of Palaemonidae were observed. Water temperature and life cycle patterns of these shrimps affected their seasonal occurrence. The amphidromous shrimp species Caridina leucosticta, Caridina serratirostris, and Macrobrachium nipponense were distributed within a brackish estuary and the lower reaches of rivers, while the landlocked shrimp species Paratya improvisa, Neocarid- ina denticulata, and Palaemon paucidens were found in the lower and middle reaches. The biomass of all shrimp in each sampling area measured between December and March ranged from 0.49 to 34.72 g m-1 (wet weight in grams per meter of river bank) in the Isazu River with relatively dense riverbank vegetation, and from 0.06 to 1.22 g m-1 in the Yura River with less riparian vegetation. Environmental factors such as stream gradient, distance to saltwater in- trusion, structure of riverbank habitat, and the life history of each species were important factors in determining their longitudinal distribution. -

Read Full License Page 1/20 Abstract Not only through species interactions but also through excretion of nutrients, consumers can have profound effects on the ecosystem structure. While many studies in lentic ecosystems address both effects in combination, little is known about their linkages in lotic ecosystems. By a combination of eld manipulative experiment, excretion measurements of consumes, and eld surveys, we evaluated biochemical effects of amphidromous shrimps on stream ecosystems. The eld manipulative experiment showed that the presence of shrimp suppressed the total aquatic insect biomass by 9% but increased the + total benthic macroinvertebrate biomass including the shrimps by 196%. The biomass-specic NH4 + excretion rate by shrimp was similar to aquatic insects, and the calculated mean NH4 excretion by benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage was 144% higher in the presence of shrimps. On the other hand, 3− 3− shrimps excreted much less PO4 than aquatic insects, and the PO4 excretion by the benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage did not change by the presence of shrimps. The eld survey showed a − positive correlation between NO3 concentration in stream water and shrimp density, suggesting that the + − 3− excess NH4 was nitried and raised NO3 concentration. -
