WELTY A CAREER OF DISTINCTION he last several months have been especially nostalgic as I prepare to say good-bye to the Fresno State Tcommunity – a community that has been my focus, my inspiration and my life for the last two decades. As I reflect on where we’ve been and consider what is next for this university I’ve come to love, I am confident that Fresno State has a rock-solid foundation and is poised for a bright future. I believe that we have the right people in place at Fresno State, as well as a community of supporters and partners, to continue to serve our students and Central California. From the moment I first stepped on this campus, it was clear that Fresno State was a special place – a diverse landscape that provides the incredible opportunity to learn from one another every day. Not a day has gone by that I haven’t learned something new myself. It has been my privilege for almost 22 years to be part of this amazing university. The graduate is new Kansas City Chiefs head coach HERM EDWARDS, who interned with the team in 1989. In 2001, he became the first graduate of the program to be named an NFL head coach when he was appointed by the New York Jets. “I am a head coach in the NFL today because of the opportunity the Coaching Fellowship provided me,” says Edwards. “The program is really the thing that jump-starts your career. It really worked perfectly for me. I was in the right place at the right time.” Two other NFL head coaches are graduates of the program – MARVIN LEWIS of Cincinnati and LOVIE SMITH of Chicago. The fellowship, instituted by the NFL in 1981, provides training-camp coaching positions for minority coaches at NFL clubs. More than 1,000 minority coaches have participated since the program’s inception. The fellowship had additional head-coaching success this past offseason.

Established in 1987, the Bill Walsh NFL Diversity Coaching Fellowship provides NFL coaching experience to a diverse group of participants every year. The program is named after the man who conceived the idea – late Pro Football Hall of Fame head coach BILL WALSH – and exposes talented minority college coaches, high school coaches and former players to the methods and philosophies of NFL coaching staffs. Walsh introduced the concept to the league in 1987 when he brought a group of minority coaches into his San Francisco 49ers’ training camp. The program has tutored nearly 2,000 minority coaches through the years and has grown to the point that every NFL team participates during offseason workout programs, minicamps and/or training camp. The ATLANTA FALCONS had 10 minority coaches participate in the program in 2018, the most of any team this year. In 2018, the program included a record seven female participants – ELIZABETH GORE (Cincinnati), ELENA GRIGELEVICH (Baltimore), SHAAKIRA HASSELL (Carolina), JENNIFER KING (Carolina), LORI LOCUST (Baltimore), PHOEBE SCHECTER (Buffalo) and STEPHANIE SHARPE (Atlanta and Washington). Cincinnati Bengals head coach MARVIN LEWIS, a graduate of the program, had four participants assisting him in 2018 and has seen the development of the program over his career. “I had the opportunity to work in this program when Coach Walsh initiated it with the 49ers, and it’s great to see it continue as strong as it is,” said Lewis.
