**PRESS RELEASE** SFMTA Weekend Transit and Traffic Advisory

San Francisco—The Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) releases the following upcoming event-related traffic and transit impacts for this weekend, from Friday, January 22 through Monday, January 25, 2016. Anyone traveling in San Francisco can check www.sfmta.com or call 311 to find out which of the 83 Muni lines will get them where they want to go. All road users are encouraged to be aware, share the roadway and to follow all rules to ensure everyone’s safety. Whether you are riding Muni, taking a taxi, walking, riding a bike or driving, please remain vigilant to keep everyone safe. If you see suspicious activity, please report it.

Walk for Life

Saturday, January 23: The 11th annual Walk for Life West Coast will stage a rally and march on Saturday. There will be speakers at Civic Center Plaza beginning at 10:45 a.m., an information fair at 11 a.m. and followed by a rally at 12:30 p.m. The march will commence at 1:30 p.m. from Civic Center Plaza via Gough Street to Market Street and to Fremont Street. The march may not completely clear of Market Street until 3:30 p.m. A possible attendance between 25,000 and 30,000 is expected. For event details, please visit www.walkforlifewc.com.

Market Street will be closed to traffic between 10th Street and Fremont Street from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Cross traffic between gaps in marchers will not be allowed. Motorists should expect significant delays along the Market Street corridor during the closure.

SUPER BOWL 50 EVENTS

Saturday, January 30 through Sunday, February 7: Super Bowl 50 is coming to with activities taking place across the region. The SFMTA is working with the Super Bowl 50 Host Committee, regional transportation partners, City and community leaders to ensure that residents, commuters and visitors can get where they are going safely, securely and with minimal disruptions during the Super Bowl festivities.

The Super Bowl will be played in Santa Clara, but many Super Bowl 50 activities will take place in San Francisco. A million visitors are expected. Whether you are visiting, working or a resident, prepare for extra travel time, take transit, bike or walk where you need to go. No matter how you choose to travel, please plan ahead and know your options before you go.

SUPER BOWL 50 Events continued

Super Bowl City in Downtown

Super Bowl City is a free-to-the-public fan village taking place in downtown San Francisco along Market Street to Justin Herman Plaza. Super Bowl City will be open for nine days from Saturday, January 30 to Sunday February 7.

Street Closures and Transit Reroutes Before, During and After Super Bowl City Saturday, January 23 through Friday, February 12: Super Bowl 50 festivities that take place at Justin Herman Plaza will require the following street closures beginning at 7 a.m. on Saturday, January 23 and through 8 p.m., Friday, February 12.

Closures will facilitate the set up and take down for the event. Closures affect transit, motor vehicles, commercial deliveries, pedestrian and bicycles:  Market Street between Beale and Steuart streets  Southbound Embarcadero between Washington Street and Don Chee Way  Steuart Street between Market Street and Don Chee Way  Spear and Main streets between Market and Mission streets  Intersections of Main, Spear, Drumm, and Steuart streets at Market Street

The following Muni routes will be affected by the street closures January 23 through February 12. Most routes listed below will terminate within two to three blocks of regular downtown terminal. **The weekends only E Embarcadero streetcar service will not operate on the following weekends: 1) January 23-24; 2) January 30-31 and 3) February 6-7.

Driving and Parking Motorists are encouraged to find alternative forms of transportation in and around San Francisco during Super Bowl 50 activities. Take transit, bicycle or walk to the area. If you must drive, pack extra patience and expect crowded and congested driving conditions.

Parking will be restricted during Super Bowl 50 activities:  There will be no event parking  On-street parking near the event area will be restricted  Curb space (i.e. parking) will be very limited to make room for transit, emergency vehicles and event loading

Paratransit Private cars will not be allowed within the Super Bowl City perimeter on or beyond streets that are closed. Paratransit vehicles and taxis will have access to “transit only” lanes and access to these zones beyond street closures.

There will be Paratransit loading zones at the following locations:  Washington Street, north side, The Embarcadero to Drumm Street  Mission Street, south side, The Embarcadero to Steuart Street  Market Street, south side, existing cut-out between Fremont and Beale streets  California Street, south side, Davis to Front streets  3rd Street, east side, existing loading zone north of Howard Street.

Taxis Temporary taxi stands will be in place to serve customers traveling to and from the Super Bowl events. Stands will have signs posted indicating, “No Parking Taxis Only”.  California Street, south side, between Davis and Drumm streets  Steuart Street, west side, between Mission and Howard streets  Howard Street, north side, east of Third Street, to serve the .

Bicycles A bicycle detour will be in place between The Embarcadero and Market Street is on 2nd street via Howard or Folsom Street. Due to the anticipated crowds, bicyclists should plan to walk bikes on the east sidewalk in front of the Ferry Building.

There will be four main public entrances – one on Market Street (just east of Beale/Davis) and three along The Embarcadero (at Washington, Harry Bridges Plaza and Don Chee Way).

NFL Honors at Bill Graham Auditorium Saturday, February 6: NFL Honors Ceremony will take place at Bill Graham Auditorium from 2 to 7 p.m. and will require the following street closures:  Two traffic lanes on Hayes Street between Polk and Larkin streets  One traffic lane on Larkin Street between Grove and Hayes streets

CONSTRUCTION WORK AND OTHER UPDATES

UPDATE: Sunset Re-railing Project

Saturday, January 23 through Monday, January 25: construction work will begin from 2 a.m., Saturday to 3:30 a.m., Monday.

During construction, bus shuttles will provide substitution service for the N Judah Line between Church and Duboce streets and Ocean Beach from approximately 5 a.m., Saturday until end of service on Sunday.

UPDATE: Sunset Tunnel Re-railing Project continued

To accommodate Super Bowl 50 related events, the Muni subway, which has been closing every night at 9:30 p.m. in support of the subway communications system upgrade projects, will open to resume train service starting this Saturday. Instead of transferring to a bus shuttle on Market Street, N Judah customers traveling to Caltrain Station on an N bus after 9:30 p.m. can transfer to an N Judah train at Church and Duboce streets to travel directly to Caltrain Depot at 4th and King streets.

There will be three weekend shutdowns tentatively scheduled for this project:  Weekend of February 12-14  Weekend of February 26-28  Weekend of March 4-6

Additional shutdowns may be required.

This weekend, the Transit Signal Priority (TSP) system upgrades will take place in the trackway on Judah Street between 34th and 38th avenues as part of the Sunset Tunnel project. The work will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, each day. The intersections will remain open during construction. The westbound wheelchair accessible platform at Sunset Boulevard served by bus shuttles will be temporarily relocated to the curbside between Sunset Boulevard and 37th Avenue. The eastbound accessible platform at 37th Avenue will be moved to the exiting curbside stop next to the island stop. Bus shuttles will provide accessible service at the curb.

The Sunset Tunnel Trackway Improvement Project includes and infrastructure replacements inside the Sunset Tunnel, located between Cole Valley and Duboce Triangle, Transit Signal Priority (TSP) upgrades for nine intersections along the N Judah line and construction of two accessible platforms at Judah Street and 28th Avenue. The TSP work takes place concurrently with the Sunset Tunnel construction scheduled for weekends only. Construction of the accessible platforms at Judah Street and 28th Avenue was successfully completed in March 2015.

UPDATE: Muni Subway System Closed Evenings for Upgrades

Muni Metro Subway service will resume nights beginning Saturday, January 23 following the completion of subway communications system upgrades.

Once the subway service resumes at night, all trains will be running through the subway during all hours of service from approximately 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. the next day. The bus shuttle service currently in place for the subway service will be suspended between St. Francis Circle and Folsom Street stop.

Now until Further Notice: Central Subway construction work on Stockton Street in Union Square has resumed.

One traffic lane is open on Ellis Street between Powell and Stockton streets.

ONGOING: Safer Market Street - Turn Restrictions

Enforcement of turn restrictions on Market Street between 3rd and 8th streets has been in effect. The Safer Market Street project supports the city’s Vision Zero goal of eliminating all traffic fatalities by improving safety conditions and reducing conflicts for all road users.

Locations where turn restrictions are enforced are indicated on the turn restriction notice.

Note: With the temporary reopening of Ellis Street to eastbound traffic, private vehicles are prohibited from turning onto Market Street from Ellis Street, instead cars will proceed straight onto 4th Street from Ellis Street. Muni, paratransit, bicycles, taxis, commercial and emergency vehicles are exempt from the turn restrictions.

Now through Tuesday, January 19: Ongoing construction work for the Transbay Terminal that requires a partial or full closure of Beale Street between Mission and Howard streets for most times of the day.

The closure requires bus reroutes and change of bus stop for some Muni bus routes. ONGOING: Transbay Terminal Construction continued

During construction, one traffic lane on Beale Street will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the week of January 18 until Friday, January 22.

Two traffic lanes will be restored at all times on or before Saturday, January 23 when Muni service previously detoured will be returned to regular routes.
