Turning Point The RubberDucks (78-62) scored four times against Matt Manning (0-1) in the fifth inning to wipe out a 3-2 deficit. Elvis Perez led off the inning with his first Double-A hit, a double, and scored on a double by Ernie Clement. Andrew Calica followed with an RBI single to tie the game, 4-4. Two batters later, Mathias crushed a double to left-center, chasing home two runs and giving the Ducks a 6-4 lead. Anderson has missed most of the last two seasons after elbow surgery. After the first, the Ducks pieced the rest of the game together with six relievers. Pasquale (3-3) picked up the win despite giving up a pair of runs in his 1.2 innings. DeMasi worked the final two innings, retiring all six batters he faced, to earn his first save. This season marks Mansolinoi’s third as a manager in the Indians minor league system. A native of Newport Beach, California, and now a resident of Nashville, Tennessee, Mansolino managed the Class-A Lynchburg Hillcats last season. He was named Carolina League “Manager of the Year” after guiding the Hillcats to a stellar 87-42 overall record and a Carolina League co-championship. Mansolino made his managerial debut with the Lake County Captains in 2016. Drafted by the Pirates in the 26th round of the 2005 draft out of Vanderbilt University, Mansolino played professionally for six years in the minor leagues and was a career .231 hitter with 19 homers and 173 RBI. In addition to the Pirates organization, he also played in the Phillies minor league system and with three independent clubs before moving into coaching in 2011. He served as the RubberDucks hitting coach in 2015. Mansolino played four years for head coach Tim Corbin at Vandy, including an NCAA tournament appearance in 2004. Mansolino’s father, Doug, is the minor league field coordinator for the Phillies. #47 Rigo Beltran, Pitching Coach—After spending the past three seasons as pitching coach at Class-A Lynchburg, former major league left-hander Rigo Beltran will serve as the RubberDucks pitching coach in 2018. Beltran, 48, joined the Indians in 2014, following seven years as a pitching coach in the Reds organization. After being selected in the 26th round of the 1991 draft by the St. Louis Cardinals out of the University of Wyoming, Beltran went on to pitch professionally for 16 seasons. He appeared in 78 major league games with the Cardinals, Mets, Rockies and Expos, going a combined 2-3, with a 4.40 ERA. Born in Tijuana, Mexico, and now a resident of Delray Beach, Florida, Beltran served as the pitching coach for Mexico in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. #25 Kevin Howard, Hitting Coach—RubberDucks hitters will have the luxury of getting advice from a College World Series champion this season, as former University of Miami star Kevin Howard will serve as the RubberDucks hitting coach. This will be his fourth season as a hitting coach in the Indians organization. Howard, 36, was a sophomore infielder when the Hurricanes defeated Stanford to win the 2001 college baseball title. The following summer, he was drafted in the 5th round by the Reds and went on to play professionally for 10 seasons. Howard slugged 93 homers and drove in 540 runs during his minor league career. He was born in Hinsdale, Illinois, attended high school in Westlake Village, California, and now makes his off-season home in Miami Beach. #13 Dennis Malave, Bench Coach—A fixture in the Indians player development system, Dennis Malave assumes the role of bench coach for the RubberDucks in 2018. Feller still a Cleveland star -- in Tribe archives Hall of Famer's artifacts center stage at Progressive Field exhibit By Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | @MLBastian | January 20th, 2016 CLEVELAND -- Jeremy Feador placed a manila folder on a counter and carefully flipped it open, revealing a stack of papers. The protected letter on top was from the National Baseball Hall of Fame, complete with an image of the brick building on the letterhead, notifying Bob Feller on his election in 1962. Feador, the Indians' team curator, then pulled out a Western Union telegram from beneath that letter. The small, yellow slip of paper, which included a red banner and a depiction of roses, was addressed to Feller and read: My most sincere congratulations. I am honored to go into the Hall of Fame with you. Jackie Robinson. "It's just such a neat piece of baseball history," Feador said with a smile. "To see the kind of respect between both players in a telegram like this is really neat, and kind of just an incredible piece of baseball history. You have two legendary names on this document." That telegram, along with many more just like it from a long list of historic names from baseball's past, were unearthed in the basement of the former Bob Feller Museum in Van Meter, Iowa. After the Feller museum closed more than a year ago, the Indians worked closely with Feller's son, Steve, and the city of Van Meter to determine the best way to handle the large collection of artifacts. The Indians were able to bring a large portion of the items to Cleveland, where many pieces now are on display in the Bob Feller exhibit in the stadium's Terrace Club for fans to enjoy.

  • Walk-Off Stuns Tribe After Kluber's Short Start by Jordan Bastian MLB.Com @Mlbastian ST
Walk-off stuns Tribe after Kluber's short start By Jordan Bastian MLB.com @MLBastian ST. PETERSBURG -- Ji-Man Choi squatted and grimaced in pain upon reaching first base in the second inning for the Rays on Monday night. One of Corey Kluber's cutters tailed too far inside, striking him on the leg and ending a turbulent outing for the Tribe's ace. A swift meltdown by Kluber initiated a long night for Cleveland's bullpen, which turned in a valiant effort before Choi delivered a bruise of his own. In the ninth inning, the Rays' designated hitter drilled an offering from Indians closer Brad Hand out to right for a two-run homer that dealt the Tribe a 6-5 loss in walk-off fashion. It was a crushing conclusion to what had been a strong night for the Cleveland relief corps. "That's a lot to ask," manager Terry Francona said. "If somebody has a hiccup, you lose." With the loss, the American League Central-leading Indians made it highly improbable that they will be soaking the visitors' clubhouse at Tropicana Field with champagne this week. With its magic number trimmed to four -- thanks to a Twins loss Monday -- Cleveland can potentially clinch its third straight division title Wednesday, but the Tribe plays in the afternoon, while Minnesota plays a night game. Kluber cruised through the first four batters he faced, striking out three in that stretch before the wheels came off in the second. In a span of eight batters, the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner allowed four runs on five hits, including a two-run homer to Jake Bauers.

  • Carrasco Doing Part to Make Holidays Bright by Mandy Bell MLB.Com
Carrasco doing part to make holidays bright By Mandy Bell MLB.com @MandyBell02 A young Carlos Carrasco spent each Christmas Eve writing the perfect letter to place under the tree so that Santa could find the wish list overnight. The following morning was filled with excitement, as Carrasco would race to the tree to see his desired toy sitting where he placed the note just hours prior. Christmas morning can be one of the most exciting times of the year for young children. But it didn't take Carrasco long to realize that not everyone was fortunate enough to celebrate the holiday by opening presents. Growing up, the Indians pitcher said he noticed a lot of people who would go out of their way to help children at all times of the year, and he made it his goal to do the same. Although his work is done year-round, the holiday season holds a special place in Carrasco's heart. Through his Carlos "Cookie" Carrasco Children's Foundation, the hurler ships toys to areas in Venezuela and the Dominican Republic to help brighten families' holidays. "I really like [to help during] the holidays, because I know that there are children who do not get toys," Carrasco said. "That's why we're there." Many of the gifts have already been sent, and almost all of the remaining toys will reach their destinations before Christmas Day. Carrasco has provided families with holiday gifts for the last few years and said he will never forget seeing the kids' faces for the first time.
