Indians Rally to Halt Brewers' Win Streak by Adam Indians rally to halt Brewers' win streak By Adam McCalvy and Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | July 22nd, 2015 + 29 COMMENTS MILWAUKEE -- Onetime Brewers prospect Michael Brantley burned his former team for four hits and four RBIs in leading the Indians to a 7-5 win at Miller Park on Wednesday and a split of this two-game Interleague series. Brantley, who has proven to be the key piece of the prospect package sent to Cleveland in the July 2008 trade for CC Sabathia, hit a tying three-run home run off Brewers starter Kyle Lohse in the third inning, a go-ahead single in the fifth and finished a triple shy of the cycle as the Indians overcame a shaky start from rookie right-hander Cody Anderson (four runs in 2 2/3 innings). Five Indians relievers combined to hold the Brewers at bay over the final 6 1/3 frames. "Cody, probably coming off the break, was maybe a little too strong," Indians manager Terry Francona said, "He was having trouble driving the ball down. He left some changeups up. To his credit, he gave up 10 hits and nine were singles and he didn't walk anybody. So even though it wasn't a great outing, the game wasn't out of reach. And then Brantley ties it up and our bullpen did a great job." Adam Lind had four hits and four RBIs for the Brewers, who brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Lohse endured another poor outing at a time during which his hold of a spot in Milwaukee's starting rotation is tenuous. He surrendered five earned runs on 10 hits, including home runs for Brantley and Francisco Lindor. "You have tough spots, you just keep grinding," Lohse said. "That's why I've been able to stay in the game as long as I have. I know how to grind through those tough spots. There were a couple innings there that really could have gotten away, especially late. I know how to pitch. I know my stuff's there, I've just got to stop making the mistakes and just keep working hard." MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Striking first: Starved for runs one night earlier, Cleveland jumped on the board early against Lohse. Lindor, the rookie shortstop, worked a full count and then drove a pitch over the right-field wall for a solo homer in the first inning. For Lohse, it marked the 17th time in 20 starts that he has allowed at least one home run. "He's playing with energy, and he's still learning," Francona said of Lindor. "I love the energy and the enthusiasm. That really helps a lot. We see what everybody loves so much. It's just, experience will do him a world of good and he's getting some right now." Counterattack: Anderson allowed three runs total in his first four Major League starts (30 1/3 innings). The rookie right-hander then allowed three runs in his first inning against Milwaukee. With two outs, Lind torched a two-run homer (No. 16 on the season, tying Ryan Braun for the team lead) and Jean Segura later chipped in an RBI single to put the Brewers up, 3-1. Brantley bucks trend: Hitting with runners in scoring position has been a team-wide issue for Cleveland, though Brantley (.349 in 86 at-bats entering Wednesday) has been an exception. In the third, Brantley drilled a three-run homer off Lohse to pull the game into a 4-4 tie. In the fifth, the outfielder came through with an RBI single to give the Tribe a 5-4 lead. As a team, Cleveland went 5-for-11 with RISP in the win. "The more chances you get, the better opportunities we're going to have, obviously," Brantley said of the team's production with RISP. "We just have to make sure we start capitalizing on it a little better each time and learn from either our mistakes or when we take advantage of it. It's a learning process every day that we go out there. Hopefully, we build off of it." More > Last gasp: Jonathan Lucroy and Lind doubled off Indians closer Cody Allen in the ninth inning as the Brewers cut the deficit to 7-5 and brought the winning run to the plate with one out for left fielder Khris Davis. He worked to a 3-1 count before hitting a bouncer to third base that went for a game-ending double play, snapping Milwaukee's four-game winning streak. QUOTABLE "Ever see a guy try to pull something off the shelf, drops it, tries to put it back, knocks it over some more and the whole thing falls down? Yeah, about like that." -- Lohse, putting into words the toughest season of his career More > TWO THE HARD WAY A day after turning four double plays in Tuesday's win over the Indians, the Brewers turned four more in consecutive innings from the second through the fifth -- including one of the rare 2-6-3 variety. Batting with one out and runners at first and second base in the fourth inning, Indians reliever Austin Adams thought he had bunted foul. But the baseball actually stayed fair, so Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy threw to Segura covering third for the second out of the inning, and Segura trotted across the diamond before tossing the baseball to Lind at first base to end the inning. Here's the particularly odd part: Replays showed that Lucroy inadvertently tagged Adams on the shoulder while fielding the bunt, which, if noticed by home-plate umpire Mark Carlson, would have negated the force play at third. "First of all, I thought the ball was behind the plate," Francona said. "And then as soon as I got back [to the dugout], [bench coach Brad Mills] said, 'Hey man, he tagged him.' So I went back out and he said, 'I can't let you [challenge] that.' So I said, 'Basically, we took it twice.' He was OK, he just said, 'I still can't let you do it.' I understand. I just didn't think it made a lot of sense." SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS While the Indians had four double plays Wednesday, only three were of the ground-ball variety. The last time Cleveland grounded into at least three double plays in back-to-back games was Aug. 6-7, 2012, against the Twins. WHAT'S NEXT Indians: Cleveland will head back home to begin a four-game set with the White Sox, starting with a 7:10 p.m. ET tilt on Thursday. Right-hander Trevor Bauer (8-6, 4.03 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the Tribe at Progressive Field. Bauer has gone 2-0 with a 1.33 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings against Chicago this year. Brewers: The Brewers head west for a weeklong trip to Arizona and San Francisco that begins Thursday night against the D-backs. Milwaukee has won each of Mike Fiers' last five starts, and will seek to continue that streak against Arizona pitcher Zack Godley, who will be making his Major League debut. Recharged Brantley delivering for Tribe By Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | @MLBastian | July 22nd, 2015 + 1 COMMENT MILWAUKEE -- Do not expect to find any sawdust on Michael Brantley's batting gloves. When runners are in scoring position, the Indians' smooth-swinging outfielder does not grip the bat handle too tight. On Wednesday, Brantley put his poise on display in a 7-5 victory over the Brewers at Miller Park, which he once thought would become his home ballpark. The exception to Cleveland's issues with runners in scoring position took it to the team that originally drafted him, finishing a triple shy of a cycle in a four-hit, four-RBI performance to conclude Cleveland's five-game road trip. When Brantley sees runners on base, he has only one thing on his mind. "Get the runners in," Brantley said. "It's point blank and simple. Do whatever I can to get the runners in." Brantley makes it sound so easy, and he makes it look that way, too. With his 4-for-5 showing, Brantley improved his season average to .364 (32-for-88) with runners in scoring position and .471 (24-for-51) with RISP and less than two outs. Take Brantley out of the mix, and the Indians are batting just .211 with RISP this season. Accounting for 18.4 percent of Cleveland's hits with RISP, Brantley's production lifts the Indians' season average to .229. With runners on the corners in the third inning, Brantley pulled a 1-0 changeup from Brewers righty Kyle Lohse to right field for a three-run homer (his seventh blast of the year). In the fifth, Brantley slashed a pitch to left field to score Jason Kipnis from second base. For good measure, Brantley added a double in the seventh inning and a single in the ninth. Brantley said "there's no secret" to hitting with RISP. Indians manager Terry Francona went a little more into detail on what has made Brantley successful. "One, he's a really good hitter," Francona said. "And he doesn't need to do more, because he's such a good hitter. But he realizes that. He's smart and he knows for the most part how guys are going to attack him. He doesn't take a ball that's outside and pull it, or something offspeed and roll over.

If I'm not sleeping, eating or spending time with my family, I'm preparing for that Sunday's game. “And when I first work with a particular analyst, researching their career is definitely a big part of it,” Albert added. “With (Daryl Johnston) ‘Moose,’ for example, there are various anecdotes from his years with the Dallas Cowboys that pertain to our games. When I work local Knicks telecasts with Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier on MSG, a percentage of our viewers were avid fans of Clyde during the Knicks’ championship runs in 1970 and 1973, so we weave some of those stories into the broadcasts.” As the 2016 NFL season gets underway, Albert once again teams with longtime broadcast partner Johnston, with whom he has paired for 10 seasons, sideline reporter Laura Okmin and producer Barry Landis.

  • Castrovince | October 23Rd, 2016 CLEVELAND -- the Baseball Season Ends with Someone Else Celebrating
C's the day before: Chicago, Cleveland ready By Anthony Castrovince / MLB.com | @castrovince | October 23rd, 2016 CLEVELAND -- The baseball season ends with someone else celebrating. That's just how it is for fans of the Indians and Cubs. And then winter begins, and, to paraphrase the great meteorologist Phil Connors from "Groundhog Day," it is cold, it is gray and it lasts the rest of your life. The city of Cleveland has had 68 of those salt-spreading, ice-chopping, snow-shoveling winters between Tribe titles, while Chicagoans with an affinity for the North Siders have all been biding their time in the wintry winds since, in all probability, well before birth. Remarkably, it's been 108 years since the Cubs were last on top of the baseball world. So if patience is a virtue, the Cubs and Tribe are as virtuous as they come. And the 2016 World Series that arrives with Monday's Media Day - - the pinch-us, we're-really-here appetizer to Tuesday's intensely anticipated Game 1 at Progressive Field -- is one pitting fan bases of shared circumstances and sentiments against each other. These are two cities, separated by just 350 miles, on the Great Lakes with no great shakes in the realm of baseball background, and that has instilled in their people a common and eventually unmet refrain of "Why not us?" But for one of them, the tide will soon turn and so, too, will the response: "Really? Us?" Yes, you. Imagine what that would feel like for Norman Rosen. He's 90 years old and wise to the patience required of Cubs fandom.

Feller still a Cleveland star -- in Tribe archives Hall of Famer's artifacts center stage at Progressive Field exhibit By Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | @MLBastian | January 20th, 2016 CLEVELAND -- Jeremy Feador placed a manila folder on a counter and carefully flipped it open, revealing a stack of papers. The protected letter on top was from the National Baseball Hall of Fame, complete with an image of the brick building on the letterhead, notifying Bob Feller on his election in 1962. Feador, the Indians' team curator, then pulled out a Western Union telegram from beneath that letter. The small, yellow slip of paper, which included a red banner and a depiction of roses, was addressed to Feller and read: My most sincere congratulations. I am honored to go into the Hall of Fame with you. Jackie Robinson. "It's just such a neat piece of baseball history," Feador said with a smile. "To see the kind of respect between both players in a telegram like this is really neat, and kind of just an incredible piece of baseball history. You have two legendary names on this document." That telegram, along with many more just like it from a long list of historic names from baseball's past, were unearthed in the basement of the former Bob Feller Museum in Van Meter, Iowa. After the Feller museum closed more than a year ago, the Indians worked closely with Feller's son, Steve, and the city of Van Meter to determine the best way to handle the large collection of artifacts. The Indians were able to bring a large portion of the items to Cleveland, where many pieces now are on display in the Bob Feller exhibit in the stadium's Terrace Club for fans to enjoy.

  • Walk-Off Stuns Tribe After Kluber's Short Start by Jordan Bastian MLB.Com @Mlbastian ST
Walk-off stuns Tribe after Kluber's short start By Jordan Bastian MLB.com @MLBastian ST. PETERSBURG -- Ji-Man Choi squatted and grimaced in pain upon reaching first base in the second inning for the Rays on Monday night. One of Corey Kluber's cutters tailed too far inside, striking him on the leg and ending a turbulent outing for the Tribe's ace. A swift meltdown by Kluber initiated a long night for Cleveland's bullpen, which turned in a valiant effort before Choi delivered a bruise of his own. In the ninth inning, the Rays' designated hitter drilled an offering from Indians closer Brad Hand out to right for a two-run homer that dealt the Tribe a 6-5 loss in walk-off fashion. It was a crushing conclusion to what had been a strong night for the Cleveland relief corps. "That's a lot to ask," manager Terry Francona said. "If somebody has a hiccup, you lose." With the loss, the American League Central-leading Indians made it highly improbable that they will be soaking the visitors' clubhouse at Tropicana Field with champagne this week. With its magic number trimmed to four -- thanks to a Twins loss Monday -- Cleveland can potentially clinch its third straight division title Wednesday, but the Tribe plays in the afternoon, while Minnesota plays a night game. Kluber cruised through the first four batters he faced, striking out three in that stretch before the wheels came off in the second. In a span of eight batters, the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner allowed four runs on five hits, including a two-run homer to Jake Bauers.
