Syllabus for Women in Rock: From the 1950s to the 1980s Instructor: Richie Unterberger, [email protected] OLLI Berkeley Week One: Women in Rock: The Early Years and The Girl Groups In the 1950s, rhythm and blues singers like Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker have some of the first rock’n’roll hits; Wanda Jackson and the Collins Kids are top rockabilly acts; and Brenda Lee becomes the first woman rock superstar. As New York’s Brill Building becomes established as the top place for rock publishers, women like Carole King, Cynthia Weil, and Ellie Greenwich become some of pop-rock’s most successful songwriters. Girl groups like the Shirelles, the Crystals, the Ronettes, the Chiffons, and the Cookies have numerous hits in the early 1960s, forming one of the major trends in rock of the period. In the early 1960s, some of the most R&B-oriented girl groups become some of the first soul stars, especially for Motown Records, with the Marvelettes, Martha & the Vandellas, the Supremes, and Mary Wells. Week Two: Women in Soul and British Rock Women soul singers emerge throughout the country, some of them more pop-oriented (Maxine Brown, Dionne Warwick), some of them earthier (Carla Thomas, Irma Thomas, Etta James). Aretha Franklin is anointed the Queen of Soul after moving to Atlantic Records and adopting a tougher, more spiritual sound. Other women soul singers with a forceful style emerge and increase in popularity, like Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, and the Staple Singers. Current Bibliography CURRENT BIBLIOGRAPHY Tim Brooks Serious research into recording history often appears in small circulation collec tors' journals that are rarely indexed in the standard sources. To help ARSC mem bers find interesting and useful articles that they might otherwise miss, this column regularly surveys a wide range of such publications, and notes articles that deal with historical subjects. To be included in this listing, an article must be in English, be reasonably substantive, and deal with recording history-as opposed to musicology, sociology, or current matters such as reviews of new LPs, record prices, and current artists. "Current Bibliography" augments the less frequent "Bibliography of Discographies" by covering a great many articles which contain no discography, including biogra phies, interviews, label histories, genre articles, and articles on repair and preserva tion techniques. If an article was accompanied by a discography this is indicated by "WfD" or "discog.,'' although in most cases the "discography" is simply a list of titles and catalog numbers. Issues covered this time are those received between October 1988 and August 1989. Most should still be available from the publishers, at the addresses indicated below. Doctoral Dissertations. 19. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations/19 “Must Be the Season of the Witch”: The Repression and Harassment of Rock and Folk Music during the Long Sixties Daniel Andrew Simmons, Ph.D. University of Connecticut, 2013 Between the mid-1960s and early-1970s, the genres of folk and rock music were often culturally subversive forces that, at times, supported such countercultural mores as illegal drug use, obscenity, and a hedonistic sexuality which offended some governmental agencies and law enforcement authorities in the United States. Although the countercultural subversion frequently attributed to such music was neither the same as nor necessarily inclusive with revolutionary, leftist political ideologies and movements, such music commonly provided the soundtrack and inspiration for various counter- hegemonic political groups as the antiwar movement, the Youth International Party, the Black Panther Party, and the Weather Underground (all of which challenged government authorities which they condemned as imperialist, racist, and oppressive). Consequently, a variety of officials, including FBI agents, the U.S. Military, and local law enforcement officers, including municipal narcotics and vice squads, instituted various forms of repression or harassment against certain musical performers, promoters, or concertgoers.
