This walk can be joined at ath (D16) B582 several points along Stoughton Rd. A6 We’re starting on the A6 next to Albion Street Launde School, at the start of Stoughton Road. 2. Walk part the North Memorial Homes and Framework Knitters Cottages. At the first mini roundabout take a 10 o’clock turn into Blackthorn Lane. 3. This is a private road with a public footpath. It’s tree-lined and lovely. 4. Pass through the gate halfway along the lane. 5. At the end of the lane, turn left onto Manor Road and look for the start of a public footpath on the opposite side of the road, just a few metres up. It’s an overshadowed entry into a narrow footpath. 6. Follow the path for a few minutes. 7. Turn right off the path into a field. 8. Walk across the field, keeping the hedge on your left. 9. At the end of the path is a metal gate to the left of an animal’s water trough. 10. The gate brings you out onto Gartree Road. The entrance to the Arboretum is opposite. 11. If you’re feeling like a sit down and a drink – turn right onto Gartree Road to The Cow and Plough Pub. A walk around their land is also available. 12. In the Arboretum walk straight ahead after going through the gate, with the car park and benches to your right. There is a main path going to the left. Cross this and carry on straight ahead. 13. Pass the memorial trees on your left. 14. Carry straight on. 15. When you come to a main path, join it to go straight ahead again. 16. Keeping the road to your right, carry on past a large gate until the path forks off to join the pavement. 17. Turn left. This is the top of Shady Lane and you’re now in Evington. 18. Turn left, passing St Denys Church, which is sometimes open for a visit. It’s a friendly church with lots of focus on the environment, including Welly Walks for families some Sundays. 19. Take the left hand fork. 20. This takes you to a row of shops. Needing a sit down and a coffee? Vintage 186 Café and Gifts is on the left just along the road. 21. To enter the Arboretum again, turn left down School Lane. The entrance is straight ahead. 22. Pick up the path straight ahead. 23. When you come to a fork, turn right. 24. Walk along the boardwalk. 25. At the end of the boardwalk, take the right hand fork. 26. The path takes you over the stream. At the other side, take the right hand fork, keeping the stream on your right. 27. Straight ahead is a narrow gate into the Golf Club. (An alternative is to follow the path to the left and rejoin the original route at the gate into the Arboretum, and go through the gate into Gartree Road, then following the route in reverse.) 28. There’s a public footpath across the Golf Club but for this section, watch out for flying balls! Go straight ahead. 29. The Golf Club has beautiful grounds and is very well maintained. 30. The path takes you through a small copse. 31. Coming out of the copse, walk straight on until you see this sign and yellow footpath post then bear left. 32. Cross the green of the course into a small group of trees – there’s a yellow post in here to signal the path but it’s a little hidden. 33. Walk straight on. 34. At the end of a path is a ‘gate’ out onto Gartree Road. 35. Looking for a café? Turn right onto Gartree Road, second left at the big roundabout and then right onto Allandale Road where there are several. Otherwise, on Gartree Road go straight ahead following the sign for Leicester South (A6) 36. Walk along the Stoughton Drive South past big houses. 37. At the junction with Manor Road you could turn left and walk 5-10 minutes to rejoin Blackthorn Lane. For a slightly longer route, carry straight on. 38. At Southmeads Road, turn left. You are now opposite the University Botanic Garden – if you’d like to take a detour, carry on Stoughton Drive South to the A6, turn right and then right again up Glebe Rd to find the entrance. 39. This is a fairly quiet road. 40. When the road forks, take the left hand fork. 41. This takes you into a car-free path with the University Manor Road sports centre to the left. 42. At the end there is a small gate. Go through and turn left. 43. This takes you back onto Blackthorn Lane. 44. Turn right back, retracing the start of this walk. 45. Back down Stoughton Road to the A6..
