Simon Fraser University Library Burnaby, BC, Canada Revised: Spring 2007 ABSTRACT Knowledge of tea etiquette was a significant marker of middle-class gentility and contributed to middle-class formation and gender construction in colonial Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Early middle-class settlers brought tea ware and employed the tea ritual to set standards of gentility that determined social inclusion or exclusion. Tea drinking shifted from a predominantly masculine activity in the late eighteenth century, as commercial and political men met in their parlours over tea, to an increasingly feminine ritual by the mid- nineteenth century. Attending this transition was the feminization of the parlour, a quasi-public space important for the display of middle-class gentility - a process that blurred the boundaries of separate spheres as women extended their domestic and communal influence. Increased female control of the tea ritual and the parlour contributed to middle-class men's concerns that their private and public authority was diminishing. InglisIQuinlan Collection ..................................................................... 90 vii INTRODUCTION In 1842, George Fenety, publisher of the Saint John Commercial News and General Advertiser, wrote a short story, The Lady and the Dress-maker: or, A Peep at Fashionable Folly, in which he characterized a weekly gathering of women to drink tea as the "gossip circle."' Guests attending the fictional tea party included Dolly Blab, Miss Tongue, Mrs. Mouth, and Mrs. Grundy, who evaluated the conduct of their neighbours, with comments such as "she ought to be ashamed of herself," as tea was being p~ured.~Fenety located his imaginary circle around a tea table, an essential article of furniture in a middle-class parlour. Display of the tea ritual was a signal of middle-class status, as Fenety set the scene with the hostess, Mrs. Jones, "pouring out a cup of tea, and handing it to Miss Dolly Blab," and following through with, "Pass over your cup, and let me give you another, Miss T~ngue."~This mid-century association of female tea drinking and talk reflected a change in the ideological construction of gendered roles in the tea ritual from the eighteenth century to the nineteenth, as the venue shifted from the tavern to the parlour, and as the dominant figure

It is generally accepted that they resided there permanently by the early 19th century. The authors review the available evidence and conclude that the permanent occupation of Newfoundland by the Micmac began in the 1760s. Bartel/Olaf Uwe Janzen INTRODUCTION It is generally conceded that the Micmac of Cape Breton Island were a maritime-adapted people with sufficient seafaring skills to extend their territorial range as far into the Gulf of St. Lawrence as the Magdalen Islands and as far east as St. Pierre and Miquelon.1 By the eighteenth century, the Micmac were able to maintain a persistent presence in southern and southwestern Newfoundland. Some scholars have concluded from this that southwestern Newfoundland could have been a regular part of the territorial range of the Cape Breton Micmac since prehistoric times.2 In the absence of archaeological evidence to support such a conclusion, others, such as Marshall (1988) and Upton (1979:64) are unwilling to concede more than a seasonal exploitation of Newfoundland.

John Eagleson, Anglican missionary and acting chaplain of Fort Cumberland, describing Cumberland Planters during the rebellion.1 ***** "O most mighty God," prayed the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel missionary at Windsor. "Ruler of Heaven and Earth," prayed the Rev. William Ellis as H.M.S. Vulture sailed out Minas Basin to relieve Fort Cumberland in November 1776.     Utah State University From the SelectedWorks of Gene Washington 2008 Apropos Doors, Janus and Tristram Shandy gene washington, Utah State University Available at: https://works.bepress.com/gene_washington/155/ APROPOS DOORS, JANUS AND TRISTRAM SHANDY In the course of a discussion of “Doors as Limina ,” the French critic, Claude Gandelman, suggests that literary research, by failing to “deal systematically with doors in fiction, has failed to understand what may be a “metaliterary tale” of the fiction itself-- or, perhaps, something so far unknown about the genre, if any, the fiction belongs to.” 1 He then goes on, by way of illustrating how the “Doors as Limina” would appear as a tool of literary research, to discuss briefly Madame Bovary , a work “full of doors and windows,” and Kafka’s Before the Law, a story that involves a man seeking justice, a doorkeeper and a series of doors (pp. 53-54). For Gandelman, Flaubert, in particular, “seems to need an opening of a door in order to write a new chapter or describe a change in the mood of his heroine” (p. 54). Tristram Shandy is a work replete with both the use and the mention of doors and windows. There is, for example, the parlour door, the most often used and mentioned , the dressing room door, Toby’s sentrybox door, and the door to Mrs Wadman’s house. Even the parts of doors, the bad hinges on the parlour door ( TS , 3.21.239), various key-holes (TS , 3.38.277; 8.35.729), and the rapper on Mrs Wadman’s door ( TS , 9.16.768), have a role in the narrative.

Morrison External Examiner Date: September 15, 2015 ii Atlantic Parlour Culture: Loci of Power By Amber Melinda May Hanrahan Abstract Parlour Culture is considered for its long duration and social impact on both sides of the Atlantic, but my research focus culminates with the expression of that culture in Queens County, Nova Scotia from the late 18th century to the mid-20th century. Interdisciplinary research of vernacular parlour culture has uncovered evidence for a sharing of social power through reciprocity and inclusivity during the American parlour of New England, the Liverpool Township and the settlements of White Point and Hunts Point, Queens County. To identify the essence of parlour culture in each of these areas, research traces the intangible life behaviours as related to the tangible ones of place (locus). Through its dominant goal of promoting relationships between the home and the community, parlour culture becomes the instrument for the realization of self- identity. Thus, the essence of parlour culture is that of a spatial artifact directed toward the construction of sustainable community life. An original study of two South Shore communities reveals an elegant social model based on a parlour culture that was transferred from New England.

Section 112 states that a BCA only need grant a consent for the alteration of all or part of an existing building if it is satisfied that, after the alteration the building will comply as nearly as is reasonably practicable with the provisions of the Code that relate to:- • means of escape from fire (i.e. install smoke alarms); and • provision for access and facilities for people with disabilities; and • continue to comply with other provisions of the Code to at least the same extent as before Schedule 1 of the Building Regulations 1992/150 describes a dwelling as being a building where a group of people live as a single household or family. Augustine 1 The community uses the Pacifique orthography, while the Francis-Smith system spells it L’sipuktuk (Sable & Francis, 2012). Abstract Traditionally, the Míkmaq enjoyed an interconnected relationship with the land, harvesting what they needed from the earth and the ocean, guided by the concept of Netukulimk, the practice of sustainability. Upon the arrival of European settlers, new trade practices were introduced, and what was once plentiful was quickly depleted. Although the original inhabitants were assured that their lands would be protected by agreements and treaties, these assurances proved to be false, and the traditional relationship with the land was threatened, as the Míkmaq—presaging the fate of most Indigenous Peoples in Canada—were dispossessed of their historical lands and forced to live on reserves; many of them far away from the environments to which they had had biological and spiritual ties. Land is central to our understanding of current Indigenous health issues; centering around how the Míkmaq traditionally employed land and resources, what changes in that relationship were brought about by colonization, and how their removal to reserves influenced their relationship vis-à-vis their environment. In addressing the ways that land policies, post-first contact, were developed and implemented over time, it is possible and necessary to juxtapose that history with the story of the forced mobilization of the Míkmaq and examine the effects that the dispossession of land had upon their livelihood and economic activity.
