Louise died in the summer of 2010, at the age of 70. Konrad died three years ago, at the age of 68. The Ulbrichs, who moved to Warren with their two young daughters in 1978, renovated the old Studley dairy farm on Finntown Road to raise sheep, hay and to grow blueberries. Besides the Ulbrichs‘ giving of their time to the community in many ways, they have helped preserve An Ulbrich farm field on Finntown Road. Photo by Leanne M. Robicheau the rural character of Warren through their ownership and operation of several farms and fields in town. For many years, Louise was a member of the Friends of the Warren Free Public Library and a member of the Maine School Administrative District #40 Board of Directors. She was known for her letters to the editor, expressing opinion on various local issues, and is remembered picketing at the corner of Route 90 for the ―Stop the Widening‖ of Route 1 protest. A few years ago, she wrote an eloquent letter to the town manager, expressing her concern about the town cutting down the 200-year-old sugar maple trees in the Town Cemetery. Konrad served on the zoning board of appeals and he was part of the zoning task force effort with an interest in preventing sprawl and maintaining the rural nature of the town. Both were citizens who cared about Warren, particularly in the areas of rural farming, fishing and logging traditions of the town and they supported industry in these areas. Konrad twice took on the defunct tradition of harvesting the marsh grass from the meadow on Route 1 for blueberry hay and was pleased at such events as the Alewife fishery being reinstated in the village. The Ulbrichs‘ daughters, Wilhelmina Ulbrich and Cecile Tucker, continue to farm the family property. She later attended school at the old schoolhouse on that same road. And, she still lives on Oyster River Road in the house she and her late husband built some forty years ago. But soon, Spear will be leaving Warren to live next-door to a granddaughter and her great- grandchildren in Hampden. Although she will miss her beloved hometown, Spear looks forward to meeting new friends and to spending time with her family. Spear had one daughter. She now has four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and is expecting her first great-great grandchild in early March. Over the years, Spear has been involved in her community. For the past six years, she has served as a valued Election Clerk, who works from start to finish even when the day ends in the wee hours of the next morning. As a child growing up in Warren, Spear (then Virginia Wyllie) recalled her mailman father driving a horse-drawn sled or wagon to work because the post office, located in the downtown area, was ―too far‖ from home. The family eventually moved into town, living at several locations there. After graduating from Warren High School in 1939, Spear attended the Ballard Busi- ness School in Rockland, which she completed in 1942. Right out of school, she worked in the Office of Price Administration in Augusta, which included investigating food, gas and tire stamp claims. Spear married Roger Teague in 1943 and moved to Tennessee for a couple of years while he was in the military. He died in 1959. In 1967, she married Parker Spear and Virginia “ Ginny ” Spear they resided in Portland for four years, visiting Warren as often as possible. They built the home where she still lives in 1970. He died in 1989. Besides working in Augusta, Spear worked at The Georges River Woolen Mill for six years from 1946 to 1952, where she did payroll and composed letters from shorthand. In 1953, she began a banking career that spanned 50 years, start- ing at the Thomaston National Bank. Spear retired in 2002, when she turned 80. For a while, Spear was involved in Eastern Star and she was one of the original organizers of Warren Day, with Marianne Pellicani and Leland ―Hubby‖ Boggs. ―We used the old cast iron tubs to keep the soda cold,‖ she said of Warren Day. Spear is active in the Mission Circle at Warren Baptist Church, where she is a parishioner. The group rolls bandages for the Dominican Republic. Her intended departure from Warren is a bittersweet one. She will miss her Warren friends, but is looking forward to meeting new ones. ―To me right now, I don‘t mind,‖ she said about leaving. ―My generation has gone by fast. I‘m looking for new friends — so many (of my friends) are gone.‖ 2010 AnnualTown ofReport Warren, ~ Town Maine of Warren MISceLLaneoUS 2010 Annual Report Miscellaneous General Information Town Office Hours Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Selectmen’s Meetings Every Other Wednesday beginning 1/12/2011 Planning Board Meetings 1st Thursday of the month unless agenda calls for more Zoning Board of Appeals Meetings 4th Thursday of the month only if needed Code Enforcement Officer Same hours as the Town Office Assessor’s Office Wednesday and Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Transfer Station Hours Thursday 12 noon to 6 p.m. Friday 12 noon to 6 p.m. Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Library Hours Wednesday 12 noon to 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Burning Permit Information Edward ―Junior‖ Grinnell, Fire Chief 273-2743 Clayton Winchenbach 273-2622 Town of Warren Web site http://town.warren.me.us/ Mailing Address Town
