Following RA9003, the MOM closed the dumping site on Boracay Island and they try to develop a new Sanitary Landfill (SLF) in Brangay Kabulihan. This part includes the results of series of surveys for the development of the Kabulihan SLF. 2 Objectives The site survey aimed to provide sufficient information and data necessary for the planning for the SLF. Specifically, the objectives of the survey on the new SLF are: - To generate topographic, cross-sections and longitudinal profiles of the site, - To establish the geological setting of the site including seismic condition, - To determine the nature and characteristics of the geological strata, - To obtain surface water quality upstream, downstream and within the site and groundwater quality at the site both during dry and wet seasons, - To obtain the presence of landfill gases and record odor at and adjacent to the site, - To document other relevant environmental conditions including ecological conditions, - To prepare conceptual design of the new SLF as desk study for the feasibility study, - To estimate the cost of the development of new SLF, - To complete an environmental assessment, including appropriate mitigation measures and a suitable management program, and - Drafting of the report amended from the existing IEE Report.

    Gloaming by Kathleen Jones Throughout the history of Thoroughbred racing there are many exceptional horses who have been held as examples of heroes whose names would live forever. We call them legends. But somehow, over time, the details of their successes have grown foggy until eventually the memory of these once-legendary animals lives only in the rarely-touched paper leaves of libraries. One horse in particular who deserves a better fate than anonymity is an Australian-bred gelding named Gloaming. At a time when Americans were celebrating the exploits of Man o'War and Exterminator, Australian and New Zealand race fans were going crazy for Gloaming. He won from 4 furlongs to a mile and half, setting time records at any distance. At one point his streak of victories had reached nineteen in a row. From ages 3 to 9 he began in 67 races, and won 57 of those. He was 2nd on nine other occasions. The one race in which he failed to run either first or second was a race at age 3 in which he fell. Gloaming was entirely of British descent, and was inbred 4x4 to Two Thousand Guineas runner-up, Sterling. He also carried duplications of Bend Or, Galopin, and Rosebery in his pedigree. The racing season of 1918/1919 in Australia and New Zealand got off to a slow start owing to an outbreak of influenza which necessitated the closing of several race meetings. So Gloaming's first start was a 9f prep stakes for the AJC Derby. He won his debut by 8 lengths then followed up with a new time record in the Australian Derby.

    Hendra virus and Australian wildlife Fact sheet Introductory statement Hendra virus (HeV) causes a potentially fatal disease of horses and humans. HeV emerged in 1994 and cases to date have been limited to Queensland (Qld) and New South Wales (NSW), where annual incidents are now reported. Flying-foxes are the natural reservoir of the virus. Horses are infected directly from flying-foxes or via their urine, body fluids or excretions. All human cases have resulted from direct contact with infected horses. Evidence of infection has been seen in two dogs that were in contact with infected horses. HeV has attracted international interest as one of a group of diseases of humans and domestic animals that has emerged from bats since the 1990s. HeV does not cause evident clinical disease in flying-foxes and direct transmission to humans from bats has not been demonstrated. Ongoing work is required to understand the ecology and factors driving emergence of this disease. Aetiology HeV is a RNA virus belonging to the family Paramyxoviridae, genus Henipavirus. Natural hosts There are four species of flying-fox on mainland Australia: Pteropus alecto black flying-fox Pteropus conspicillatus spectacled flying-fox Pteropus scapulatus little red flying-fox Pteropus poliocephalus grey-headed flying-fox While serologic evidence of HeV infection has been found in all four species (Field 2005), more recent research suggests that two species, the black flying-fox and spectacled flying-fox, are the primary reservoir hosts (Field et al. 2011; Smith et al. 2014; Edson et al. 2015; Goldspink et al. 2015). The impact of HeV infection on flying-fox populations is presumed to be minimal.

It was July 2008 and the young woman had the job she had always wanted at the Redlands Veterinary Clinic, looking after horses and working with people who were more like family than colleagues. Looking back, it seems like another life. Her life before Hendra virus. "I'm still tired all the time," Beohm is saying, nearly five long years later. She has ventured to Melbourne to find herself, such as she can, after contracting a disease that has baffled and horrified scientists and doctors in equal measure. "I still get pain all down my right side. I get night tremors. I can't hear out of my right ear," she explains, the weariness heavy in her voice. "I could keep going on about what this thing has done to me, but what's the point? I just have to live with it." Beohm, 25, is one of only three known survivors of Hendra virus. Her friend and mentor, Ben Cunneen, a 33-year-old equine vet who was also struck down, died the day after she was released from hospital.
