As Seen In/November 2016 04 Get on Trend: Tim Gunn Says that Glasses Are Your Wardrobe’s Secret Weapon Tim Gunn isn’t trying to make glasses great again: They never were out of style. The Project Runway judge partnered with Transitions lenses to persuade eyewear skeptics into “Seeing Life Through a New Lens” by protecting their eyes from harmful exposure to UV rays and blue light that’s emitted from technology. For instance, did you know that 75% of Americans claim to be concerned about UV eye exposure, and yet only 31% actually wear sunglasses when they go outside? We’re hypocrites, but why should we be when Transitions lenses can fit into virtually any frame as a bold fashion accessory and are available in nearly any prescription? Transitions block 100% of the sun’s harmful UVA/UVB rays, and their tint adjusts to accommodate natural and blue light from our cell phones, laptops, iPads throughout the day. Gunn suggests that when you finally commit to using Transitions lenses, you should consider round frames, vintage square frames, and brow line frames as fashionable options. “There’s a lot that goes into picking the perfect frame, but picking the perfect lens is a snap. Transitions bring function to the fashion world,” says Gunn. “They fit seamlessly into any lifestyle and keep you seeing and looking your best in any light.” Read the entire article here: http://bit.ly/2fB5ejF As Seen In/November 2016 05 CAPTURE DAISY’S LOOK! NBA Legend, philanthropist and entrepreneur Shaquille O’Neal is re-enlisting as his holly jolly alter-ego to encourage shoppers to donate to the charity. Also making a comeback is The Great Big Shaq-A-Claus Wish List – items purchased from this list will be sent directly to Toys for Tots, helping deliver the magic of a toy to kids in need across the country. “One act of kindness can be an inspiration to a kid – it was for me when I received the gift of a basketball on Christmas morning,” said Shaquille O’Neal. “That’s why I’m once again suiting up as Shaq-A-Claus and calling on my little elves across the country to help me and Toys”R”Us deliver the awesome magic of a toy to kids in need this Christmas by donating to Toys for Tots.” As the largest retail partner in the history of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, Toys”R”Us has raised nearly $50 million and collected more than 4 million toys since the partnership began in 2004. The Shaq- A-Claus program is also supported by the Toys”R”Us Children’s Fund. As Seen In/November 2016 08 SHAQUILLE O’NEAL WEIGHS IN ON HIS BRANDS AUTHENTICITY Recently, the big time investor and former NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal weighed in on the authenticity behind his brand and his investments. In Dec. 2015, Shaq signed a deal with brand development company Authentic Brands Group in hopes of continuing his legacy, joining the ranks of individuals such as Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson and Julius Erving. The deal could turn profits in the hundreds of millions, providing Shaq with a 51 percent share of the deals that he does for the rest of his life. When asked about his motivation behind a deal with the company, Shaq didn’t hesitate in his response. “[I was] born and raised in Newark, New Jersey. I went to college in Louisiana, where my marketing professor told me that ‘big guys don’t sell.’ I wanted to prove him wrong, and you know I’ve been proving him wrong ever since,” Shaq told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street.” “I wanted the name of the Shaq brand to live on forever. You know when you speak about the Shaq brand, I want to be known as the ambassador of fun.” On October 24, Shaq announced his new role as a local franchise owner of and the global spokesperson for Krispy Kreme doughnuts. In an interview with CNBC, O’Neal elaborated on his decision to do so, saying, “All the deals that I’m involved with are companies that I’ve believed in and companies that I’ve used. I always tell people, if I haven’t used your product, I will never take your money.” In the past, Shaq has been involved in deals for products such as Icy Hot and Arizona Iced Tea. In 2015, with that same “I must believe in it” mentality, O’Neal refused a deal with Starbucks. His authenticity extends beyond his endorsements to his investments as well. “My thinking is that you know on the investment side, if it’s going to change the world, it’ll probably work,” Shaq told CNBC when explaining his investments in companies such as Google and products such as Vitamin Water. An owner of the Sacramento Kings since 2013, Shaq is currently looking into expanding his sports investments beyond the NBA and into soccer and baseball as well. The Lessons is a series of short films in black and white and produced with scarce resources. Each “lesson” represents a fictional movie scene that Ferreras would like to watch and no one has filmed yet. He called them “lessons” because with these productions the director has been exploring the narrative film field, since he has mainly worked with commercials and documentaries. The Lessons were produced with almost no budget. Each short film was shot with just one rehearsal, in four hours and in a small space. However, despite the low financial and time resources, they has been widely acclaimed in festivals such as Sedona, Outfest in Los Angeles, the New York Latino Film Festival, the Havana Film Festival, Newfest and NY Shorts. Among the cast and crew, leading figures of the film world have collaborated with Alberto Ferreras for The Lessons, including: ■ Alex Stikich, photographer (Bombshell: the Hedy Lamar Story). ■ Actors and actresses Shirley Rumierk (NBC’s Rise), Olga Merediz (In The Heights), Francisco Solorzano (Floating Sunflowers), Suzanne Di Donna (The Sopranos), David Fraioli (Dexter), Ardes Quinn (Dames like Us) and John David West.

  • Hate It Or Love It: Global Crossover of Reggaetón Music in the Digital Age
© 2014 Michelle Marie Rivera HATE IT OR LOVE IT: GLOBAL CROSSOVER OF REGGAETÓN MUSIC IN THE DIGITAL AGE BY MICHELLE MARIE RIVERA DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications with a minor in Latina/Latino Studies in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Angharad N. Valdivia, Chair Professor Lisa Nakamura Associate Professor Isabel Molina Guzmán Associate Professor Richard T. Rodríguez ABSTRACT This dissertation critically examines reggaetón music as it is discursively constructed through mainstream media and Internet debates about the genre (e.g., online music forums, social networking profile pages) during and after the 2004 global musical crossover of reggaetón. Using various case studies to critically examine processes of both textual production and reception to reggaetón, I interrogate if and how the music industry constructs and simultaneously targets a Latin global and US Latino market for reggaetón through various marketing strategies and via mainstream media coverage in the US and abroad. Considering textual production and reception as equally significant processes that are constantly in contention with one another, I examine how active and participatory audiences online, particularly fans and anti-fans, negotiate reggaetón as a cultural text and in relation to the ways they are interpellated as the target market for it. Here, I apply Louis Althusser’s definition of interpellation, as “ideology’s ability to assign individuals to specific positions within its own communicative (semiotic) representations of reality” to the ways that the audience for reggaetón is constructed based on specific demographic features, such as ethnicity, race, age, income and/or language (Grossberg et al.
