We delivered the business community’s legislative priorities to our state leaders. If not the Manatee Chamber, then who?

Our team’s goal during this annual lobbying trip, and throughout each legislative session, is to advocate for you and support lawmakers. We highlight issues that are important to the business community, such as water quality, workforce housing, transportation and infrastructure, taxation, and education and workforce development. We believe responsive legislation addressing these issues is key to meeting the Chamber’s mission of building a strong business environment while enhancing our community’s quality of life. Senate President Galvano with Chamber Team However, we’re not just lobbying. Equally important, our Chamber team makes this trip to foster strong relationships with our senators, representatives, legislative staff, and agency heads. Relationship-building involves listening to our legislators to understand their priorities and how we can support them. This year’s trip to Tallahassee was unique as we welcomed a number of new lawmakers. Coupled with a new governor, cabinet members, and numerous newly appointed agency heads, we have a new landscape developing in Tallahassee. Of 170 lawmakers, 114 have served two years or less, and a number of them just took office a few months ago. This dynamic underscores the importance of building and creating relationships with our state’s top decision makers. Representative Buchanan with Chamber Team

The Chamber believes it’s critically important for us to be a go-to resource for our lawmakers and state leadership as they adopt policy and craft legislation that is good for our community - without adversely impacting our business community and quality of life.

Legislators vote on hundreds of pieces of legislation each session that have an impact on our business environment. During the 2018 session, 3,192 bills were filed with 200 becoming law. Florida has the 17th largest economy in the world, larger than both Saudi Arabia and Switzerland, and we have a myriad of challenging issues we must address to maintain a desirable quality of life in our state. Each session, our Representative Newton with Chamber Team senators and representatives must become familiar with various, complex legislative and policy matters. It’s important the Chamber is known as a trusted resource, that is the voice of the business community.

So while you’re busy running your business, take comfort that your Chamber is representing you and providing you a seat at the table.

16 ManateeChamber.com Manatee Chamber of Commerce | March Current 2019 56th Annual Dinner - A Night of Celebration and Leadership The Chamber’s Annual Dinner is an opportunity to bring members together to celebrate accomplishments, catch up with friends and honor the legacy of our beloved Bob Bartz. More than 630 business and community leaders were there to celebrate the Chamber’s 129-year history.

Outgoing Chairman Darcie Duncan, Duncan Real Estate, was honored for her leadership during a year when the Chamber accomplished so much to support local businesses, grow our economy, and contribute to our great quality of life. Darcie shared her pride as Chairman saying, “The issues we tackled in the last year are incredible to me.”

Bill Poulton, Tropicana Products, was installed as the 2019 Chairman and offered his thoughts on Chamber priorities for the coming year. “There are more than 20 committees at the Manatee Chamber working on issues that are priorities very much in step with our Manatee County legislators," Bill stated. "These include supporting red tide research and water quality, investment in education, and transportation and infrastructure improvements. One of the biggest assets we have is the ability to bring leaders together.” Bill added, “There are giants in this community who preceded me. I will give my best every single day as your Chairman of the Board.”

Ron Allen, NDC Construction Company, was honored with the 2nd Annual Robert P. Bartz Leadership Award. Cliff Walters, the recipient of the inaugural Bartz Award, introduced Ron by saying, “Ron builds the community by being a donor, a door opener, and a doer.” Ron, in turn, praised Bob Bartz as the best consensus builder he ever knew and an invaluable contributor to bettering our community. 2019 Chairman of the Board, Bill Poulton with Darcie presented two Chairman’s Awards. The first was given to Jim Boyd Immediate Past Chairman, Darcie Duncan for his outstanding service in the Florida House of Representatives, the community culture he has created in his business, and his continued dedication to supporting the Chamber’s mission. The second was presented to Kevin DiLallo, 2017 Chairman of the Chamber Board and CEO of Manatee Memorial Hospital. Kevin gave tremendous leadership to the Chamber during his year as Chairman, a year when the Chamber and the community suffered great loss with the passing of Bob Bartz, who led the Chamber as President for 35 years.

Jacki Dezelski, President and CEO of the Chamber, presented the President’s Award to Bank OZK for providing office space to Chamber staff while the Chamber’s new Bradenton office is being constructed as part of the City’s mixed-used parking garage project. Bank OZK has extended the Chamber team tremendous hospitality. Jacki Dezelski presenting Jason Osbourne, Bank OZK, with the President's Award

Ron Allen is described by colleagues as a generous leader, friend, and successful businessman who exhibits a powerful community commitment. Ron is a past chairman of the Manatee Chamber and a graduate of Leadership Manatee and Leadership Florida. He is president of NDC Construction Company, NDC Development Company, and NDC Realty. His community support has touched more than 60 local organizations.

“I am truly honored to have been selected as the 2nd Annual Robert P. Bartz Award honoree. Bob was a dedicated leader and to receive this award that recognizes his selfless leadership and love of community is overwhelming,” Ron Allen stated. “I hope to continue Bob’s legacy of collaboration and advocacy by sharing the passion and commitment I have to making a positive impact in our community.”

Created to recognize and inspire community leaders, the Bartz Award celebrates the legacy of the late Bob Bartz, who was president of the Manatee Chamber for almost 35 years until his passing in early 2017. He cared deeply about Manatee County’s economic health and worked diligently, using the Chamber programs and influence, to make a positive difference. His love for our community and the people who live and work here extended well beyond his work-related responsibilities. Bob was a selfless leader of the highest integrity and a tireless advocate.

Congratulations to Ron Allen on receiving the 2nd Annual Robert P. Bartz Award for Outstanding Leadership! Social Security Scam: Beware of Callers Seeking Your Social Security Number

Scammers pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) are calling and saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. They’ll want you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it or they will even tell you your bank account may be seized. Your caller ID may even show the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213)– but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling. Here's what you need to know:

• Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but If you’re worried about what the caller says, ManateeChamber.com/BBC hang up and call back to speak to the real SSA. • Never give any part of your SSN to anyone who contacts you, or your bank account or credit card number.

Each animal in our adoption center receives the highest quality care, medical care and behavioral assessment and training to complete the rehabilitation process resulting in a successful adoption into a new loving home.

In September of 2015, Humane Society of Manatee County opened a 10,000 square foot state of the art veterinary clinic and high volume Humane Alliance Model Spay and Neuter Clinic. Our veterinary clinic is open to the public by appointment and provides high quality, low-to-moderate cost veterinary care to ensure that this care is available to all cats and dogs in our community. The services available at Humane Society of Manatee County Veterinary Clinic continue to expand to meet the growing needs of the animals in our community.
