Miocene Swiftlet Collocalia nov. sp. FOSSILS New Zealand’s only Tertiary land vertebrate fauna “the St Bathans Fauna” (Worthy et al. 2007), is preserved in 16-19 million year ago, Manuherikia Group sediments, outcropping near the town of St Bathans, Central Otago, South Island. Worthy (et al.) wrote: “The St Bathans Fauna also includes the first fossil records for a number of iconic Australian “natives”, such as the currawong, indicating that trans-Tasman dispersal of fauna has been more common than previously thought. At least 23 species of birds are represented by bones, and probable moa, by eggshell. Anatids [ducks] dominate the fauna with four genera and five species described as new: a sixth and largest anatid species is represented by just one bone. This is the most diverse Early-Middle Miocene duck fauna known world- wide. Among ducks, two species of dendrochenines [whistling ducks] are most numerous in the fauna, but a tadornine [shelduck] is common as well. A diving petrel is described, so extending the geological range of this genus worldwide from the Pliocene to the Middle Miocene, at least. The remaining 16 taxa are left undescribed but include: a large species of gull; two small waders, a gruiform [crane] represented by one specimen similar to Aptornis; abundant rail bones, including a common flightless rail and a rarer slightly larger taxon, an eagle (?), a pigeon; three parrots; an owlet nightjar, a swiftlet; and three passerine taxa, of which the largest is a member of the Cracticidae [magpie]. The absence of some waterbirds, such as anserines (including swans), grebes and shags among the abun- dant bones, indicates their probable absence from New Zealand in the Early-Middle Miocene” (Worthy et al 2007).     Does evolution of plumage patterns and of migratory behaviour in Apodini swifts (Aves: Apodiformes) follow distributional range shifts? Dieter Thomas Tietze, Martin Päckert, Michael Wink The Apodini swifts in the Old World serve as an example for a recent radiation on an intercontinental scale on the one hand. On the other hand they provide a model for the interplay of trait and distributional range evolution with speciation, extinction and trait s t transition rates on a low taxonomic level (23 extant taxa). Swifts are well adapted to a life n i mostly in the air and to long-distance movements. Their overall colouration is dull, but r P lighter feather patches of chin and rump stand out as visual signals. Only few Apodini taxa e r breed outside the tropics; they are the only species in the study group that migrate long P distances to wintering grounds in the tropics and subtropics. We reconstructed a dated molecular phylogeny including all species, numerous outgroups and fossil constraints. Several methods were used for historical biogeography and two models for the study of trait evolution. We finally correlated trait expression with geographic status. The differentiation of the Apodini took place in less than 9 Ma. Their ancestral range most likely comprised large parts of the Old-World tropics, although the majority of extant taxa breed in the Afrotropic and the closest relatives occur in the Indomalayan. The expression of all three investigated traits increased speciation rates and the traits were more likely lost than gained. Chin patches are found in almost all species, so that no association with phylogeny or range could be found.

It derives from the Lapita levels (3,000 – 2,800 ybp) and immedi- ately overlying middens extending to ~2,500 ybp. A total of 30 bird species is represented in the 1,714 identified specimens. Twelve species are new records for the island, which, added to previous records, indicates that minimally 39 land birds exclusive of passerines were in the original avifauna. Three-fourths of the 12 newly recorded species appear to have become extinct by the end of Lapita times, 2,800 ybp. The avifauna is dominated by eight species of columbids (47.5% Minimum Number Individuals [MNI ]) including a large extinct tooth- billed pigeon, Didunculus placopedetes from Tonga, and a giant Ducula sp.

[email protected] Abstract – Swiftlets are small insectivorous birds which breed throughout Southeast Asia and the South Pacific. Among many swiftlet species, only a few are notable to produce edible bird’s nests (EBN) from the secreted saliva during breeding seasons. The taxonomy of swiftlets remains one of the most controversial in the avian species due to the high similarity in morphological characteristics among the species. Over the last few decades, researchers have studied the taxonomy of swiftlets based on the morphological trade, behavior, and genetic traits. However, despite all the efforts, the swiftlet taxonomy remains unsolved. The EBN is one of the most expensive animal products and frequently being referred to as the “Caviar of the East”. The EBN market value varies from US$1000.00 to US$10,000.00 per kilogram depending on its grade, shape, type and origin. Hence, bird’s nest harvesting is considered a lucrative industry in many countries in Southeast Asia. However, the industry faced several challenges over the decades such as the authenticity of the EBN, the quality assurance and the depletion of swiftlet population.

Flightlessness in birds occurs in a taxonomically diverse array of families, but is best exemplified in the rails (Rallidae). Most flightless species of rails live on islands, where the absence of native mammalian predators may make flight superfluous. Fossil rails from Oligo-Miocene sites at Riversleigh, northwestern Queensland, Australia, are considered to represent a single species of gallinule Gallinula, described here as new. Compared with four Quaternary species of Gallinula from Australasia (two volant, two non-volant), it shows similarities with the flightless species in the development of the fore- and hindlimb elements and in other characteristics of limb bone morphology associated with flightlessness. These indicate that the Riversleigh species was non-volant. Its relationships with the Quaternary species, including the flightless Gallinula mortierii, now restricted to Tasmania, but known from Plio-Pleistocene deposits in eastern mainland Australia, are considered. Tennyson Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, PO Box 467, Wellington, New Zealand (Email: [email protected]) Published on-line: 4 November 2009 Abstract: Since the 1980s, morphological and molecular research has resulted in significant advances in understanding the relationships and origins of the recent terrestrial vertebrate fauna in the New Zealand biogeographic region. This research has led to many taxonomic changes, with a significant increase in the number of bird and reptile species recognised. It has also resulted in the recognition of several more Holocene (<10 000 years ago) bird species extinctions. The conclusion that Holocene extinctions were primarily caused by human- hunting and predation by other introduced mammals (particularly rats and cats) has been supported by new data. Despite many local eradications of introduced pests, the number of introduced species has increased, with the establishment of five more foreign birds and (on Norfolk Island) the house gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus). Many new, significant New Zealand vertebrate fossils have been reported, including more dinosaurs from the Cretaceous, and the first Tertiary records of frogs, rhynchocephalids, lizards, crocodylians, bats and a terrestrial “Mesozoic ghost” mammal from the Early Miocene near St Bathans. For birds, the earliest known penguins in the world have been discovered, and there are intriguing Late Cretaceous – Early Paleocene remains still awaiting detailed description.

Traditionally, the dried gelatinous coating of the edible-nest swiftlet is boiled together with rock sugar and eaten as a delicacy. However, today, the edible bird’s nest has also been commercialised into health and cosmetic products. Despite the importance of the product, many questions remain within the nest builder, the edible-nest swiftlet (Aerodramus fuciphagus) specifically regarding their ecology and behaviour in nature. The ranging behaviour of the Aerodramus sp., and its foraging areas were studied in the Kuala Langat district. The swiftlets were successfully tagged and tracked using vehicles. The research was conducted from March 2013 to July 2013. It was found that swiftlets had an average core area of 1687.06 ha (16.87 km²), a home range size of 6437.47 ha (64.37 km²) and an average flying distance from their birdhouses which ranged from 2 to 6 km. They were mostly found roaming in open fields, young oil palm plantations and nearby forested areas. Pearson correlation analysis showed that 50% of core feeding range areas and 95% of feeding range areas of the swiftlets correlated negatively with wind velocity (mph) at r = 0.8057, P = 0.0287 and r = 0.820, P = 0.024, respectively.
