  • The Book of Sullivan V
Selections from The Book of Sullivan v. sullivan2 1/4/10 copyright 2010 by Richard L. Meehan meehan at stanford.edu. This and later drafts can be viewed at: http://www.scribd.com/doc/ This draft is designed to be browsed or downloaded easily on SCRIBD. For easiest reading in SCRIBD, view in “book” view option (not “scroll”) and set to “full screen”. However if you want to browse this material online with fully functioning links, you’d do better to go to the html version at http://www.stanford.edu/~meehan/sullivan/sull.html 1 Introduction I recently revived this project which I had started twenty years ago. At that time I had decided to profile the entire Sullivan clan from the beginning of time to the 1980s. This led to extended pilgrimages to collect Sullivan stories in places like Castletown Beare and Butte Montana, both famous for Sullivans. In effect I was setting out to recreat the Book of Sullivan, the original of which was last seen in the early nineteenth century. These clan books were menat to preserve the glorius history of the Celtic clan. My research was a lot of fun, sometimes I would have long late- night phone conversations with Sullivans whom I didn’t know or meet them in strange places. Later, I put the project on the internet and thereafter hundreds of Sullivans assisted in the project, recreating chronology (years AD or BC) set forth in this book. Later I got busy with other things but then recently I met an eccentric Sullivan gent sporting a huge gold necklace here in the Robin Hood pub in Bangkok.

  • Last Cab to Darwin
LAST CAB TO DARWIN A film by Jeremy Sims 123 min / English / 2016 / Color / Australia / Digital (DCP and Blu-ray) FIRST RUN FEATURES The Film Center Building 630 Ninth Ave. #1213 New York, NY 10036 (212) 243-0600 / Fax (212) 989-7649 Website: www.firstrunfeatures.com Email: [email protected] Synopsis Rex, a Broken Hill cab driver, has spent his life avoiding getting close to people. Even his best friend and occasional lover Polly, who lives across the road, is kept at distance. One day, he discovers he is dying. He doesn’t want to be forced to rely on anyone, least of all Polly, so he decides to leave his home and drive alone the 3000kms across the continent to Darwin, where the recently passed euthanasia laws lead him to believe he can be in control of his own death. But on this epic journey he meets people who force him to re-evaluate his life. He begins to realize that a life not shared is a life not lived. Sadly it seems wisdom has come too late, until Polly finally gives Rex the courage to act. Against all the odds, in one final heroic act of pure will, he drives his cab back through time and distance to Broken Hill, where he will share what he has left of his life with the one he loves. Filmmaker Biography Jeremy Sims (born in 1966) works as an actor, director, writer and producer across theatre, film and television. [ only] Unit 3 The globalising world (1945–the present) Popular culture Popular culture includes a wide range of activities that a large number of people in a society engage in. Since World War II, Australia has developed strong industries in four key areas of popular culture: music, film, television and sport. Television and rock’n’roll music both arrived in 1956 and have had a strong influence on all groups within Australian society – this continues today. Sport has retained an important role in Australian life and has become closely tied to our sense of identity. The Australian film industry has also emerged to tell uniquely Australian stories that entertain and inform. While British, American and, more recently, European and Asian cultures have influenced us, Australia has developed its own distinct culture. Music, film, television and sport have not only become ways of reflecting who we are, but have also enabled Australia to engage with the rest of the world. chapter Source 1 ‘Hello possums’ – one of Australia’s many contributions to international popular13 culture is Barrie Humphries as Dame Edna Everage. 13A 13B 13C How did developments in How have the music, filmDRAFT and What contributions has popular culture influence Australia television industries in Australia Australia made to international Insert obook assess logo: after World War II? changed since World War II? popular culture?
