    ~ ~ ~ ~ BLACK RIVER GORGES NATIONAL PARK MANAGEMENT PLAN 2018 - 2022 ~ ~ ~ ~ Message by the Honourable Mahen Kumar Seeruttun, Minister of Agro- Industry and Food Security The Black River Gorges National Park was proclaimed in 1994 under section 11 of the Wildlife and National Parks Act of 1993. Over the last two decades the Park has become a bastion of biodiversity and other natural values in a fast-developing Mauritius, where our wild places have become scarcer and more valuable than ever before. The Black River Gorges National Park is a critical hub of our country’s terrestrial ecological infrastructure, acting as a natural reservoir of our freshwater as well as a major depository of our biological diversity. To lose this Park would be unthinkable, and to fail to look after it properly would be an injustice inflicted upon present and future generations alike. The Indian Ocean Islands Biodiversity Hotspot can be likened to a string of pearls displaying irreplaceable and unique biodiversity. In this treasure trove of biodiversity, Mauritius occupies a prominent place. A significant portion of our Island’s unique biodiversity is contained in the Black River Gorges National Park, together with certain islet reserves or parks. Protecting this biodiversity together with the ecological landscapes that are unique to our island is the focus of the Black River Gorges National Park Management Plan. In developing this Plan, Government together with all stakeholders fleshed out the common goals embedded in the Vision for the Black River Gorges National Park. It is my hope that this Park will become an outstanding example of collaboration between Government and the people to preserve what belongs to us as a nation.

This is the first comparative study of inflorescence morphology through all seven families of the order Laurales (Atherospermataceae, Calycanthaceae, Gomortegaceae, Hernandi- aceae, Lauraceae, Monimiaceae, and Siparunaceae) and the larger subclades of these families. Methodol- ogy. We studied 89 species of 39 genera from herbarium specimens and partly from liquid-fixed material, focusing on the branching patterns in the reproductive region. In addition, we used the information from the literature. Pivotal results. There are recurrent branching patterns. Botryoids, thyrsoids, and compound botryoids and thyrsoids are the most common forms. Panicles, racemes, and thyrses are rare. Panicles and racemes occur in some highly nested Lauraceae and thyrses in Hernandiaceae. Thus, the presence of thyrso-paniculate inflorescences is not characteristic for Laurales, in contrast to the statement by Weberling. Conclusions. An evolutionary interpretation is still difficult because the existing molecular phylogenetic analyses are not fine grained enough and also because the previous phylogenetic results are not robust enough to make firm conclusions within the order. However, the present structural results show that there are trends of occurrence of certain patterns in families or subclades within families, and these may be useful in a morphological matrix of magnoliids (see work by Doyle and Endress for basal angiosperms). Skr. 55: 441-458. ISSN 0366-3612. ISBN 87-7304-304-4. Molecular data accumulated since 1999 have shown that monophyletic Laurales consist of Caly- canthaceae, 10 species, ((Siparunaceae, 70 spp., (Atherospermataceae, 14 spp., Gomortegaceae, 1 sp.)), (Lauraceae, 2500-3000 spp., Hernandiaceae, 50 spp., Monimiaceae, 195 spp.)). As assessed by Guyer and Slowinski’s imbalance metric, Lauraceae and Siparunaceae are signifi- cantly more species rich than if populations/species in Laurales families had proliferated with some random equal likelihood. Four of these families have fossil records that go back to the Cre- taceous, one goes back to the Oligocene, and two are unknown as fossils (Hernandiaceae, Siparunaceae). All have multi-locus molecular phylogenies that together include representatives of 79 of the 92 genera, permitting the calibration of local molecular clocks and the comparison of families in terms of the geological periods during which they accumulated most of their extant net diversity. Most data sets exhibit sufficient heterogeneity in substitution rates to warrant semi- parametric models of sequence evolution in which different rates are assumed between ancestral and descendent branches, but excessive heterogeneity is penalized. A comparison of penalized likelihood chronograms for the six families with more than one species suggests that at the rela- tively deep level of the analysis, climate change did not affect related families in similar ways. On the other hand, the raise of the Andes appears to relate to bursts of species accumulation in both, Lauraceae and Siparunaceae.
