But before us was Peter himself. Even though he was flanked by security, Pope Francis took his time down the center aisle, smiling and greeting the crowd. When he made it to the top of the steps of the sanctuary, Cardinal Wuerl, who was accompanying him, invited him to turn around so that he could take a good look at the future of the Catholic Church in America. We roared into another round of cheers and applause for our pope, but we quickly quieted ourselves as the Holy Father made the sign of the cross and gave us his blessing. In August, I was interviewed by Jim Handly of NBC Washington (pictured right) to talk about what makes Pope Francis so popular. I talked about his humility and his way of evangelizing by returning to the heart of the Gospel. I discussed how he hasn’t changed Catholic doctrine but has approached its teachings in a different way. I also mentioned that he wants to start a dialogue with us. It was a great opportunity to share how he has provided a model to follow for all future priests. I told the reporter that I think if Pope Francis says anything to us (which he did not, but he did give us a blessing), he might tell us to continue to persevere in our discernment of the priesthood and religious life. I also shared some of my thoughts on why Pope Francis has been so well received by Catholics and non- Catholics (thankfully I had my answers ready given the NBC interview!). Finally, as you just read above, I was asked to write an article for the Catholic Standard, the Archdiocese of Washington’s newspaper.
