Cape Premier Yearling Sale cont. American Pedigrees Prove Popular... A little over three years ago, the team at Klawervlei Stud ventured to Keeneland November in search of well-related mares to boost their South African broodmare band. They left with a quartet of in-foal mares and, after letting them foal out in Kentucky, bred them back on Southern Hemisphere time and exported them to South Africa. The first of four, a daughter of Distorted Humor, went through the ring during the opening session of the Cape Premier Yearling Sale Thursday, bringing R2.75 million from trainer Gavin van Zyl, and Lot 178 the remaining three hit the spotlight last night, with a pair fetching R3 million (US$270,378) and the third R2.5 million (US$225,315). Lot 178, a colt by Speightstown out of Rubicat (Storm Cat) from the -Son Farm family of graded stakes winner Strut the Stage, generated a spirited bidding war that eventually landed in the hands of Dennis Drier, bidding on behalf of Klawervlei=s Marcus Jooste, for R3 million. Drier, who conditions Group 1-winning juvenile Captain of All (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}) for Jooste, was thrilled after signing the ticket. AIt=s unbelievable. I=m not used to buying horses at this level,@ he said. AI=m very, very privileged and honored to have an owner like Marcus Jooste and his Racing Manager Derek Brugman who have been so fantastic to me. I=ve only been training for them for the last three years, and thank goodness we=ve started off well, and let=s hope we can continue that way.@ Drier indicated it was a case of love at first sight with the Speightstown colt. AI do all the work with my wife Jill, and when he walked out of the box, he just gave you that special gut feel,@ he said. AI didn=t know much about the sire, and then of course when I made the correct inquiries from the right people, that just made me fall more in love with him. His presence, his conformation-- Jill and I just thought he was something special. So a big thank you to Marcus and Derek, because I didn=t think I could ever afford a horse like this.@ Drier is the trainer of Master Of My Fate (SAf) (Jet Master {SAf}), an early favorite for next Saturday=s G1 J&B Met, as well as popular three-time Group 1 winner Beach Beauty (SAf) Dennis Drier (Dynasty {SAf}). He saddles Barbosa (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}) in today=s G1 Cape Flying Championship at Kenilworth. Rubicat was purchased for $200,000 at Keeneland November in foal to Elusive Quality. Klawervlei sold that resulting foal for $75,000 at Keeneland September in 2012. Cont. p6
