In Shadow Moon and Shadow Dawn, George Lucas, creator of Star Wars, and Chris Claremont, author of the bestselling X-Men adventures, created a new world of myth, magic, and legend unlike any before. Now they bring their epic trilogy to an unforgettable conclusion in a novel of blazing imaginative brilliance... Elora Danan has done the unthinkable. She has slain the dragons that were the embodiment of the soul of Creation. It was a desperate act--the only way to save the dragons from the Deceiver, who would have used them to rule the Realms. Yet in Elora's possession are two last dragon eggs. To protect them, Elora spellbinds herself to her faithful companions Thorn Drumheller, the Nelwyn sorcerer and her sworn guardian, and Khory Bannefin, the long-dead woman warrior whose body is inhabited by a demon's offspring. It is a dire spell that ensures none of them will betray their cause...even at the cost of their lives. And if one of them dies, the magic of the eggs is lost forever. Pursued through a land of shadow predators by the dreaded Black Rose, the Deceiver's commando assassins, Elora and her allies must reach the free city-state of Sandeni. There they will be reunited with old friends: the brownies Franjean and Rool, the eagles Anele and Bastian, and the young warrior-scribe Luc-Jon. But Sandeni is besieged by mighty armies fueled by the Deceiver's sorcery, warrior wizards, and engines of evil magic. With defeat all but certain, Elora must convince the Sandeni people to continue the fight. What she doesn't tell them is that the greatest enemy lies within her. For the Deceiver is her own dark twin from a potential future of unimaginable evil...an evil that lies dormant in Elora's soul. And the only way Elora can stop the future is to befriend an enemy whose insatiable appetite for destruction could destroy all of Creation. Or is that, too, part of the Deceiver's plan? Seamlessly weaving together the many strands of this rich tapestry, Shadow Star is guaranteed to satisfy its many fans...and leave them breathless.. • Star Wars: a Critical Analysis 1
Running head: STAR WARS: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS 1 Star Wars: A Critical Analysis Karen McCain Southern New Hampshire University Popular Culture Professor Lovejoy December 15, 2019 STAR WARS: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS 2 Star Wars: A Critical Analysis Star Wars Final Project Notes The original Star Wars trilogy of films by George Lucas known as Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Episode VI: Return of the Jedi appeared on movie screens in 1977, 1980, and 1983, respectively(Lucasfilm, 1977)(Lucasfilm, 1980)(Lucasfilm, 1983). It is the traditional story of the heroes’ journey. A young farm boy reluctantly becomes the hero of The Resistance in the struggle against the evil Galactic Empire that is endeavoring to rule the galaxy. It’s a morality play. There are lessons of good versus evil or light versus darkness, believing in one’s self, loyalty, faith, trust, and perseverance. It is also a story of forgiveness and redemption. These films have breakoff stories, a series of prequels and sequels, video games, home decor, countless amounts of apparel and merchandise including the beloved “action figure”. There are animated and live-action television shows inspired by the original Star Wars films. This trilogy has been around long enough and has been popular enough to work its way deeply into popular culture. To understand it’s influence better one can employ the use of four different lenses to study it closer. There is the lens of history, the humanities, natural and applied sciences, and the social sciences. Using these different lenses to look at Star Wars’ effect on culture will help us understand it from different angles and much more deeply.

  • Canonicity Management and Character Identity in Star Wars
[Table of Contents] Tobias Kunz »It’s true, all of it!«. Canonicity Management and Character Identity in Star Wars Abstract Taking as its object of study the character of Grand Admiral Thrawn from the Star Wars franchise, this article examines how character identity is managed in narrative transmedial franchises. Focusing on the notion of ›canonicity‹, it suggests a way of conceptualizing how hierarchical systems of continuity can affect the mental modelling of characters. Furthermore, it discusses what strat- egies are employed—both textually and paratextually—to maintain a sense of character identity in the face of a reboot like the one undergone by Star Wars in 2014. Introduction On April 25, 2014, roughly one-and-a-half years after the Walt Disney Company had bought Lucasfilm Ltd., StarWars.com published a short press release which confirmed that in preparation for the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Lucasfilm would drop the majority of Star Wars continuity es- tablished outside of George Lucas’s six feature films.1 This marked a substan- tial »shift in […] transmedia economy« (PROCTOR/FREEMAN 2016: 232) for one of today’s most commercially successful and extensive transmedia franchises; a 1 Cf. http://www.starwars.com/news/the-legendary-star-wars-expanded-universe-turns-a-new- page [accessed September 9, 2018]. Date Defended: July 19, 2017 The Dissertation Committee for Joshua Wille certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: Beyond The Phantom Edit: A Critical History and Practical Analysis of Fan Edits ______________________________________ Chair: John C. Tibbetts, Ph.D. Date Approved: July 19, 2017 !ii Abstract Fan edits are essentially unauthorized alternative versions of films made by fans, whom I define as people with intense interest in films and related media. Unlike traditional film editing, which is characterized by a new assemblage of original film or video content, fan editing is a form of recombinant filmmaking that reactivates existing arrangements of audiovisual material. Fan edits are noncommercial transformative works that illustrate the mutability of digital cinema as well as the potential for new media artists, experimental filmmakers, and diverse critical voices to emerge from a networked public. The Phantom Edit (2000) is a seminal fan edit based on Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999) that established a model of production and distribution for fan edits. As a central research problem, this study recognizes that the failure of previous scholarship to account accurately for the history of The Phantom Edit, as well as an evident lack of close engagement with contemporary fan edits, have hindered the ability of scholars to grapple with significant developments in fan edit culture.

GEORGE LUCAS: MONUMENT VALLEY, ARIZONA & UTAH I first came in contact with Monument Valley when I was in college and won a scholarship to work on MacKenna's Gold. They gave the students a Land Rover and a camera, and we were supposed to make documentaries about the making of the movie. I had seen Monument Valley in John Ford westerns, and it was beautiful. After the documentary, I decided to stay on and make my own movie about the desert. So I spent two months sitting out there, pretty much by myself, watching the sun rise and the sun set, and the clouds go by and the shadows on the mesas, and the bugs crawling across the ground, and the wind blowing through the grass - every conceivable sensual element of that environment. And I fell in love with it. It was peaceful; it was meaningful. I had grown up in farm country, on a walnut ranch in Modesto, California, next to vineyards and a peach orchard. The ranch in front of us had horses and alfalfa fields. So I was outdoors a lot, and I like fresh air. But the desert is like a multiple of ten of the place where I grew up. It's just a picture-perfect environment, all the time. I loved watching everything change with the sun. So I made a short, abstract film, called 6-18-67 because that was the date when I started shooting it. It's kind of a tone poem, showing all the things I saw out there. There's a certain kind of peace that comes over you when there's nothing happening, or at least very little.

They still hold the promise of a new world, but sometimes this new world looks as much like a complex form of neofeudalism as a celebration of a new communality. In such a situation the question of what ‘media’ or ‘communications’ are has become strange to us. It demands new ways of thinking about fundamental conceptions and ecologies of practice. This calls for something that traditional media disciplines, even ‘new media’ disciplines, cannot always provide. The Fibreculture book series explores this contemporary state of things and asks what comes next.
