No. 1 january-february, 2010 IIC Annual Day EXHIBITION, FILM and TALK: To Mark the Centenary of Dr. Homi Bhabha, January 22 The IIC Annual Day was celebrated as a centenary tribute to the legendary physicist, Dr. Homi J. Bhabha. This included an exhibition, a film and a special lecture by Professor M.G.K. Menon. The exhibition, with photographs from the TIFR, brought alive the close personal bond between Nehru and Bhabha. Established during a visit to England by ship, when Indira Gandhi was also present, this bond led to the formation of the TIFR and the propelling of India into the nuclear age. Indira Gandhi once said that no matter how busy her father was, he always had time for Homi Bhabha. The film In Love with India revealed the multi-faceted Dr. Homi J. Bhabha personality of Homi Bhabha. This was followed by Professor Menon’s lecture, titled ‘Homi Bhabha—A The arts he enjoyed, but science was what he wanted Modern Leonardo da Vinci’. • Indians Made Significant Contributions to Guyana – by OSCAR RAMJEET
Indians made significant contributions to Guyana DEAR EDITOR, Indo Guyanese have made a significant contribution to the development of the country. They came to British Guiana as indentured labourers to work in the sugar estates and in order to augment their meagre earnings, they engaged in farming and later their offspring did not only continue but expanded into large scale agriculture. The indentured workers were called “coolies” and up to this day Indo Guyanese are labelled as coolies. What is remarkable is that the coolies who were illiterate ensured that their offspring were properly educated and they denied themselves of the basics for the education of their children. Today, there are thousands of Indos who have received high education so much so that they are scattered all over the world — many of them are world renowned in the field of medicine, technology and other important areas. There are also hundreds of Afros who did extremely well in the educational, cultural, sports and other areas. Indentured labourers were brought to the then British Guiana after the abolition of slavery because the ex- slaves and their off spring hated the land maybe because of their forced labour and moved into the towns and cities where most of them were employed as government employees – some of their children became teachers, police officers, postal workers, etc., while the Indos remain in the rural countries and concentrated in large scale farming. This trend continued for several decades and maybe up to this day. It was on May 5, 1838, the first ship landed on British Guiana shores which continued until 1917 bringing a total of 238,809 indentured laboures to work in the sugar estates.

I analyze a small set of film song exemplars to explore how the Indian classical and folk traditions provided cultural capital for the nationalist project even while the values of the film song industry included an omnivorous cosmopolitanism, a love of novelty, and a playful experimentation with genres, forms, instruments, and other musical parameters. I trace the discursive tension between film composers’ anti-colonial stances and their experimentation with Western orchestration and harmonization, operatic idioms, Latin rhythms, Arabic intonation, and other non-Indian musical resources. India’s struggle for independence thus brought the freedom both to repudiate and to re-inscribe the past, while drawing from a global lexicon of musical symbols. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction……………………………………………………………………………………………………………… 1 Discourses……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. 4 The Life of Indian Films……………………………………………………………………………………………. 7 Antecedents…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. 10 Tansen (1943)…………………………………………………………………………………………………………… 13 Mahal (1949)……………………………………………………………………………………………………………. 27 Rattan (1944)…………………………………………………………………………………………………………… 40 Dillagi (1949)…………………………………………………………………………………………………………… 50 Conclusions……………………………………………………………………………………………………………… 63 Appendix………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
