Moran, Congressional Papers Processed on: Dec. 2014 - June 2016 Biography/History: James P. Moran was born in Buffalo, New York on May 16, 1945. He grew up in Natick, MA and attended the College of the Holy Cross on a football scholarship, graduating in 1967 with a BA in Economics. He went on to attend the University of Pittsburgh, where he received a Master’s of Public Administration in 1970. In 1979 Moran was elected to the city council of Alexandria, Virginia, which marked the beginning of a long career in politics. In 1985 and 1988 he was elected to serve as Mayor of Alexandria. He resigned in 1990 when he was elected to his first term in Congress. While a member of Congress, Moran served on the Committee of Appropriations and was a member of the LGBT Equality, Congressional Progressive, Animal Protection, Sudan, Sportsmen’s, International Conservation, Congressional Arts, Congressional Bike, Safe Climate, and Crohn’s and Colitis Caucuses. He was also co-founder of the New Democrat Coalition. He served as representative for Virginia’s 8th District until he retired at the end of his term in January 2015. After retiring from Congress Moran accepted positions as a Legislative Advisor at a D.C. area law firm, and accepted a faculty position in Virginia Tech’s School of Public and International Affairs. http://holycross.edu/archives-and-special-collections 1 College of the Holy Cross Archives & Special Collections P.O. Box 3A, Worcester, MA 01610-2395 Scope and Content Note: This collection documents the career of James P. Moran while serving in Congress from 1991-2015. It is arranged in ten series. Series 1: Constituent Letters, 1997-2007; 36 boxes. This series contains letters written to Congressman Moran from constituents expressing their concerns about a variety of issues and encouraging him to support issues of their interest. Other letters expressed congratulations for his election to Congress or their thanks for his support of various issues. The letters are arranged chronologically and thereunder by the staff member who responded to the letter. Series 2: Correspondence, 1994-2014; 4 Boxes This series contains correspondence from Moran to constituents and his staff as well as letters from various people congratulating Moran on his reelection, inviting him to events and asking him or thanking him for assistance. There are also internal memos to and from staff and to and from Moran’s office. Series 3: Daily Schedules, 1991-2004; 11 Boxes This series contains Moran’s schedule arranged chronologically. Each typed page, prepared by his staff, contains information on what Moran was scheduled to do that day by the hour. There are often handwritten notes and updates on the schedules. Included with the schedules are invitations to receptions, fund raisers, meetings, and a variety of other events. Most of the invitations are printed, but also include letters addressed to Moran requesting his presence. Series 4: Subject Files, 1991-2013; 40 Boxes This series contains files of all the topics that were of interest to Moran. The files are arranged alphabetically by the title on the original folder. The folders contain a variety of records including correspondence, government documents, reports, publications and news clippings Series 5: Press Releases – Press Logs; 4 Boxes This series contains press releases that were issued from Moran’s office to be sent to newspapers or other media for publication. These include areas of interest to Moran or regarding his votes. Series 6: Newspaper Clippings, 1997-2005; 3 Boxes This series contains clippings from newspapers and other publications. The articles are about topics of interest to Moran or mention him in the article or contain stories about him his or quotes by him. The pages are generally bulleted as an outline to present his views on the topics. The material often includes related reports and news to the issues he was speaking on. Series 9: Miscellaneous Material; 1 Box This series contains personal items, campaign literature and other items Series 10: Photographs and Audio Visual; 14 Boxes This series contains two files. The first file contains photographs of James Moran including publicity shots, photos of Moran at events and with people. There are also family photographs. File two contains videos, mostly in VHS format of tapes of National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Chapter of Virginia on various subjects and others with personal appearances or interviews of Moran.
