Hence, there is a tendency of species misidentification using only the mor- phological characters. Herein, we evaluated the discriminatory power of the universal DNA barcodes (matK and rbcL) for 53 species spanning the two families. Using these markers, we inferred phylogenetic relation- ships and conducted species delimitation analysis using four delimitation methods: Automated Barcode Gap Discovery (ABGD), TaxonDNA, Bayesian Poisson Tree Processes (bPTP) and General Mixed Yule Coalescent (GMYC). The phylogenetic reconstruction based on the matK gene resolved the relationships between the families and further suggested the expansion of the Lamiaceae to include some core Verbanaceae genus, e.g., Gmelina. -

Flowering Plants of South Norwood Country Park
Flowering Plants Of South Norwood Country Park Robert Spencer Introduction South Norwood Country Park relative to its size contains a wide range habitats and as a result a diverse range of plants can be found growing on site. Some of these plants are very conspicuous, growing in great abundance and filling the park with splashes of bright colour with a white period in early May largely as a result of the Cow Parsley, this is followed later in the year by a pink period consisting of mainly Willow herbs. Other plants to be observed are common easily recognisable flowers. However there are a great number of plants growing at South Norwood Country Park that are less well-known or harder to spot, and the casual observer would likely be surprised to learn that 363 species of flowering plants have so far been recorded growing in the park though this number includes invasive species and garden escapes. This report is an update of a report made in 2006, and though the site has changed in the intervening years the management and fundamental nature of the park remains the same. Some plants have diminished and some have flourished and the high level of diversity is still present. Many of these plants are important to other wildlife particularly in their relationship to invertebrate pollinators, and some of these important interactions are referenced in this report. With so many species on the plant list there is a restriction on how much information is given for each species, with some particularly rare or previously observed but now absent plants not included though they appear in the index at the back of the report including when they were last observed. -

The work is based on morphological data, critical review of the material kept in the most of main European and some Asian Herbaria, on the results of field observations in different regions of Eurasia and on vast taxonomic literature. Phylogenetic evidence known from the literature was also taken into account. The presented information in-cludes main synonyms, type citations, data on ecology and distribution. Identification keys for the species, subspecies and varieties are given. The lectotypes of 11 names are designated: Stachys adulterina Hemsl., S. affinis Bunge, S. baicalensis Fisch. ex Benth., S. chinensis Bunge ex Benth., S. circinata L’Hér. subsp. zaiana Emberger et Maire, S. leptodon Dunn, S. madagascariensis Briq., S. oblongifolia Wall. ex Benth., S. rie-deri Cham. ex Benth., S. sieboldii Miq., S. trichophylla Baker. The most of species of the type section are pe- rennial herbs with long rhizomes. The description of the section is enlarged, with the following traits specified for the first time: a straight upper lip, the lower lip arranged at 90° from the upper one, the stamens exserted as far as to half оf the upper lip or to its edge, and white color of corolla more common for the species from Africa. -

Particular emphasis was given to phytochemistry and ethnopharmacology, since several classes of natural compounds have been reported within this genus and many of its species are well known to be employed in the traditional medicines of many Asian countries. Some important conclusions on the chemotaxonomic and chemosystematic aspects of the genus have also been provided for the first time. Actually, this work represents the first total comprehensive review on this genus. Keywords: Pedicularis L. genus; Orobanchaceae family; phytochemistry; chemotaxonomy; ethnopharmacology 1. Systematics Pedicularis L. is a genus of hemiparasitic plants, originally included in the Scrophulariaceae family but now belonging to the Orobanchaceae family [1]. The rest of the systematic classification is the following: order Scrophulariales, subclass Asteridae, class Magnoliopsida, division Magnoliophyta, superdivision Spermatophyta, subkingdom Tracheobionta. The genus comprises 568 accepted species, 335 synonymous species, and 450 unresolved species [2]. -

Abstract This checklist has 785 species and 801 taxa (for taxa, the varieties and subspecies are included in the count) in 90 plant families. The most common plant families are the grasses (Poaceae) and the sunflower family (Asteraceae). Of this total, 513 taxa are definitely known to occur on the Comanche National Grassland. The remaining 288 taxa occur in nearby areas of southeastern Colorado and may be discovered on the Comanche National Grassland. The Author Dr. Donald L. Hazlett has worked as an ecologist, botanist, ethnobotanist, and teacher in Latin America and in Colorado. He has specialized in the flora of the eastern plains since 1985. His many years in Latin America prompted him to include Spanish common names in this report, names that are seldom reported in floristic pub- lications. He is also compiling plant folklore stories for Great Plains plants. Since Don is a native of Otero county, this project was of special interest. It was discovered while examining specimens identified as S. palustris and S. pilosa during a successful effort to document S. arenicola from Pennsylvania. Known in Pennsylvania from 4 specimens representing 3 localities, the most recent Pennsylvania collection known is from 1950 (CM). This species is probably extant somewhere in Pennsylvania, but as we have no status for Historic, Extirpated is the best fit. One could argue that some time should pass with the species on the radar screens of botanists before proposing that it be given a protected status, but given the small number of specimens, the peripheral position of Pennsylvania in the range of the species, and the global rarity of the species, a good case can be made that this species is not likely to be found to be more common than Threatened, and if an extant population is discovered, it should receive immediate protection standing.
