PROGRAM NOTES 5 By Robert Kirzinger A true representative microcosm of the stylistic range of BMOP’s repertory history would be absurd, albeit maybe entertaining: forty-seven two-minute pieces for thirty-one different ensemble types? Something of that ilk might come close. The present program, though, TINA TALLON is at least an indicator of the range of the orchestra’s repertoire: all three composers of tonight’s world premieres have collaborated with BMOP before, but their individual compositional voices are highly distinctive. All three works were commissioned for and TONIGHT’S PERFORMERS written for the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. There are some broad connections, though: David Rakowski’s and Ken Ueno’s pieces are both concertos, and both Ueno’s FLUTE TROMBONE VIOLA and Elena Ruehr’s pieces were partly inspired by visual art. VISIONARY LEADERS form an important foundation of support and demonstrate their passion for and commitment to Jacob’s Pillow through Andrea Miller, the founder and choreographer of the Brooklyn-based Gallim, recently described herself as an artist who has found annual gifts of $10,000 and above. her niche working “in new arrangements of constriction.” Constriction is, of course, relative. In that short time, my learning about NEFA’s work, staff, board, and constituent partners has grown exponentially. We are fresh off the success of CCX 2015 in Keene, NH, where we awarded projects from Rhode Island and Maine with the Creative Economies Award and welcomed NEA Chairman Jane Chu for a closing keynote address.

    Junichi Fukuda, Artistic Director www.fukudance.com JUNICHI FUKUKA artistic director / choreographer Junichi Fukuda is a native of Yamaguchi, Japan. He has established a track-record of excellence in dance and choreography internationally and now works regularly in the USA with ongoing work in Japan. Began his dance career as a soloist/principal dancer with renown companies including Lar Lubovitch Dance Com- pany, Ballet Tech/NY, Oakland Ballet, Smuin Ballet/SF, , the New York Baroque Dance Company, Buglisi Dance Theatre, Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre, and Peridance Contemporary Dance Company. Fukuda has begun to make his mark as a choreographer of note receiving important awards including Emerging Choreographer Residency from Bates Dance Festival (2016), CATALYSTS Artist residency from the Dance Complex (2016-2017), the Dance Place’s New Releases Choreographer Commission (2012), the S&R Washington Award (2012), and Rehearsal and Retreat Fellowship from Boston Dance Alliance (2017-2018). His work is the recipi- ent of regular support from Somerville Arts Council (2016-2017), New England Foundation for the Arts (2016 & 2017), Boston Cultural Council (2017), Fidelity Charitable Foundation (2017) and the Boston Foundation (2018). His works have been presented at 18MASDANZA in Spain, Dance St. Louis’ The Spring to Dance Festival, Dan- ceNow at Joe’s Pub Festival and Bates Dance Festival as well as the local festivals in New England region. The Washington Post states Junichi’s work as “tasteful proposal,” “a work of easeful harmony” and “the simple, beau- tifully executed lines and swerves.” In 2014 he established FUKUDANCE company. Since its inception, FUKUDANCE has been contributing to com- munities by providing workshops to train dancers as well as to offer physical awareness to non-dancers.
