Sound, Music and the Brain: Tools to Enhance Communication, Learning and Behavior Sound, Music and the Brain: Tools to Enhance Communication, Learning and Behavior Contact information: Kathy Arquette [email protected] 503.302.7869 Lin Bauer [email protected] 503.507.3515 Additional information/resources: Dr. Alfred Tomatis (1920-2001) was a French Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. Dr. Tomatis discovered that listening problems are the root cause of may learning problems. His research led to knowledge auditory processing and its relationship to learning, behavior and communication. When our ears cannot hear certain frequencies, our voice does not contain them either. He discovered that the muscles of the middle ear, which are the gatekeepers to the brain for air conducted sound, can be strengthened and retrained. Sounds that enter the brain via bone conduction go directly into the inner ear, which makes focusing very difficult. Dr. Tomatis created a machine called the Electronic Ear to help this process. One of his books that has been translated into English is called The Conscious Ear which explains his discoveries. One of his students, Paul Madaule, wrote a book called When Listening Comes Alive telling his own story of his early learning struggles, and how Dr. Tomatis helped him overcome them. He runs a Tomatis based Listening Centre in Canada. Advanced Brain Technologies (www.advancedbrain.com) has done much follow up research and continues to offer music and sound technologies for a variety of purposes. Joshua Leeds is a sound healer who has worked with Advanced Brain, as well as on his own. His books include: The Healing Power of Sound. Don Campbell has written extensively on the transformational power of sound, music, toning and listening. His 18 books include: The Mozart Effect and The Mozart Effect for Children. He has also put together musical CDs and has designed music for hospitals and care facilities. Jeff Strong (www.stronginstitute.com) uses entrainment to create drumming for specific purposes. He has worked extensively with children and adults with various disabilities, and creates custom CDs of drumming to address areas of need. His website offers free downloads of drumming for specific purposes, and he has CD sets, including the Brain Shift Collection, and 8 CD set. He uses rigorous scientific testing and clinical trials for all his work, called Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention, where he is founder and director of REI Institute. Janalea Hoffman, (www.rhythmicmedicine.com) has created many CDs of therapeutic music using nature instruments and specific rhythms. The Monroe Institute (www.hemi-sync.com ) also has extensive research and many CDs available using the binaural beat. Dr. Oliver Sacks, neurologist and author of many books including Awakenings which was made into a widely viewed film, and Musicophilia (stories of music and the brain). A more recent film relating to music and the brain is called The Music Never Stopped. If you get the DVD, it includes an interview with Dr. Sacks at the end that is well worth watching too.     Introduction In their thirty years together, the Grateful Dead forever altered the way in which popular music is performed, recorded, heard, marketed, and shared. Founding members Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, and Bob Weir took the name Grateful Dead in 1965, after incarnations as Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions and The Warlocks. Despite significant changes in the band’s lineup, including the addition of Mickey Hart and the death of Ron McKernan, the band played together until Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995. From the beginning, the Grateful Dead distinguished themselves by their preference for live performance, musical and business creativity, and an unprecedented dedication to their fans. Working musicians rather than rock stars, the Dead developed a distinctive sound while performing as latter-day American troubadours, bringing audio precision to their live performances and the spontaneity of live performances to their studio work. Side-stepping the established rules of the recording industry, the Dead took control of the production and distribution of their music. With a similar business savvy, they introduced strategic marketing innovations that strengthened the bond with their fans. Were they potentially the greatest sound healers in rock and roll? Some came for freedom, inspiration, drugs, spiritual experiences; others came to spin in circles. The one thing that made Grateful Dead concerts so unique was not just the band but the fans. Most fans would agree it was a place they felt safe to be themselves and that the music healed some part of their consciousness they needed. Without the fans the Grateful Dead would not have been able to pull off what they did musically. Often times they were feeding off the crowd energetically, like one big mirror. Jerry Garcia once said “We still feel that our function is as a dance band. We like to play with dancers….nothing improves your time like having somebody dance. It pulls the whole thing together, and is also a nice little feedback thing”. By creating this environment for the fans to feel freedom they were able to advance in their musical explorations themselves and feel freedom on a stage. This was revolutionary time period to be alive. During their birth of a band they were one of the least popular San Francisco bands getting zero media attention. Immerging from the scene were bands like Jefferson Airplane and Quicksilver Messenger Service, this was a beautiful time period to be a band, it was almost impossible not to have inspiration everywhere you looked.

Fifteen years after Jerry Garcia died on August 9, 1995, his namesake ice cream, Cherry Garcia, continues to be the best-selling flavor for the Ben & Jerry’s brand, according to spokesperson Liz Stewart. This tidbit of information might seem trivial, but it underscores a larger point: the influence of the Grateful Dead’s guiding force continues to be felt in popular culture in ways few people would have imagined when he was a cult figure back in the 1960s and ’70s. Over the decades, Garcia’s reputation grew as he became a symbol of both the counterculture and a do-your-own-thing aesthetic he exemplified with his music.
