The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arbores- cent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of SANBI is partly based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It symbolises the commitment of SANBI to champion the exploration, conservation, sustainable use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s excep- tionally rich biodiversity for all people. Fungi Associated with Aizoaceae Seed in the Succulent Karoo
Fungi associated with Aizoaceae seed in the Succulent Karoo Z. Pieterse1, T.A.S. Aveling1 and A. Abstract The Aizoaceae, commonly known as mesembs or “ice plants”, is a plant family endemic to Namaqualand, an area inside the Succulent Karoo biodiversity hotspot in South Africa. The more than 1800 unique mesembs are in part characterised by their hygrochastic seed capsules dispersing their seed by jet action. Six capsule types: Mesembryanthemum-type, Delosperma-type, Drosanthemum-type, Lampranthus-type, Ruschia-type and Leipoldtia-type are distinguished by differences in funicles, covering membranes and closing bodies. With the existence of microbial endemism now widely recognised, research into community ecology in the Succulent Karoo is needed to enable proper conservation. Sadly the microbial life associated with Aizoaceae has received little attention, Alternaria, Colletotrichum and Fusarium, have however been isolated from the halophyte Sesuvium portulacastrum, one of the few species from Aizoaceae but not endemic to South Africa. Fungi are known to aid in germination, seedling establishment, growth, water relations and nutrition in the Cactaceae (a family closely related to Aizoaceae). We believe that fungi may play a role in the ability of Aizoaceae to thrive in Namaqualand due to their specialization in the form of thick-walled spores that remain viable and have the ability to grow slow even at extreme aridity. We have isolated species of Alternaria, Aspergillus, Bipolaris, Cladosporium, Fusarium and Talaromyces from seeds of common mesemb species from Namaqualand. -

A generic-level phylogeny for the tribe was recently produced, providing new insights into relationships between the taxa. Octopoma and Arenifera are woody shrubs with multilocular capsules and are distributed across the Succulent Karoo. Octopoma was shown to be polyphyletic in the tribal phylogeny, but comprehensive sampling is required to confirm its polyphyly. Arenifera has not previously been sampled and therefore its phylogenetic placement in the tribe is uncertain. In this study, phylogenetic sampling for nine plastid regions (atpB-rbcL, matK, psbJ-petA, rpl16, rps16, trnD-trnT, trnL-F, trnQUUG-rps16, trnS-trnG) was expanded to include all species of Octopoma and Arenifera, to assess phylogenetic placement and relationships of these genera. -

ON THE DRY SIDE OCTOBER 2018 CENTRAL COAST CACTUS & SUCCULENT SOCIETY OCTOBER SPEAKER OF THE MONTH: GENE SCHROEDER Ferocactus: The Fantastic Barrel Cacti of the Southwest & Mexico During General Kearney’s 1846 Mexican-American War expedition to Santa Fe and the later conquest of California, Lt. Emory, an officer in his force, collected and sketched several large cacti. In 1849, now Major Emory, became director of the Mexican-American Boundary Survey tasked with making a compre- hensive survey of the natural history of this newly acquired region. Large collections of cacti were made and sent to Dr. George Engelmann who later published several papers including the 1859 “Cactaceae of the Boundary.” All were amazed by the giant barrel cacti of the new territories. They were as striking and unusual then as now. For his work, Engelmann drew from botanists and explorers of these expeditions and surveys as well as professional colleagues of that era. Their names are commemorated in current species names within the genera Ferocactus erected by Britton & Rose as part of their classic 1922 work “The Cactaceae.” Big, up to 4 feet or more in height, protected by fierce thorns, topped with large flowers and edible fruit they earned the awe and respect of all who saw them. Native usage as emergency water sources and cattle food earned them the nickname, ‘traveler’s friend.’ Ranging across approximately 30 species, they now can be found in most botanic gardens and a growing number of xeric landscapes where their size and presence make them landmark plants that are tough, long lived and generally easy to grow. -

Mesembryanthemaceae James A
Mesembryanthemaceae James A. Robbins December 1982 Mesembryanthemaceae is a family of the plant kingdom with perhaps the longest name (19 letters) with the relatively simple meaning of, “pistil in the middle.” It was formerly spelled Mesembrianthemum, with the meaning of “midday flower,” but as some bloom in the morning, afternoon and many at night, the name was changed. The family is composed of mostly succulent plants of which 99% are found in south or southwest Africa. The other one-percent are found in coastal areas of Australia, New Zealand, Mediterranean area, Canary Islands, and the western coasts of Chile and California. Plants of the Aizoaceae, as many were first known, have been studied as long ago as 1652, and came into cultivation about then. Some who worked with these plants were Prof. Paul Hermann, Richard Bradley, Andrian Hardy Haworth, Alwin Berger, Dr. N. E. Brown, and Dr. H. M. Bolus. Dr. Brown was one of the first to separate the large genus Mesembryanthemum into many smaller units. Dr. Bolus, Prof. K. Dinter, and later Prof. Dr. G. Schwantes carried on this division. Still later, workers in the field were Dr. Marloth, Prof. Nel (Lithops) Jacobsen, (Vol. 111, A Handbook of Succulent Plants, and the most recent English edition of his Succulent Lexicon), Volk, Prof. Desmond Cole (with his recent revision of the genus Lithops), and Rawe (with his revision of the genus Conophytum, which is going on right now in the American Cactus and Succulent Journal, Vol. XLVII, 1975). Probably, though, we owe most of our present day knowledge to the grand old man of succulent collectors, Hans Herre, former curator for many years of the gardens at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. -

Deaf & Hard of Hearing Service Center (DHHSC), 5340 North Fresno Street, Fresno PROGRAM: Cacti of the Southern Andean Cordillera; Argentina and Chile PRESENTED BY: Rob Skillin This month’s program will feature the cacti from the region of the Southern Andes Mountains of Argentina and Chile (south of Peru and Bolivia), and stretching from the Pacific Ocean eastward through one of the driest areas on earth, the Atacoma Desert, into the western Andean foothills of Chile, to the eastern Andean foothills of Argentina. Our presenter will be Rob Skillin, who has made several trips through South America, from which he has put together this program of habitat shots of cacti ranging from the smallest of the small (Blossfeldia liliputana and Copiapoa laui) to the truly large (Trichocereus and Eulychnia) – with a few succulents thrown in for good measure. I have been growing cacti and succulents for approximately 37 years, and have been involved in various local societies for most of that time, starting with the San Diego C&SS in the 1970’s, then to the Santa Barbara and Bakersfield clubs. I currently belong to the Central Coast C&SS of which I was a founding member, first President and first Show and Sale Chairman. I have also been involved with the CSSA as a member of it’s Board of Directors, and am a CSSA certified Judge. -
Some Major Families and Genera of Succulent Plants
SOME MAJOR FAMILIES AND GENERA OF SUCCULENT PLANTS Including Natural Distribution, Growth Form, and Popularity as Container Plants Daniel L. Mahr There are 50-60 plant families that contain at least one species of succulent plant. By far the largest families are the Cactaceae (cactus family) and Aizoaceae (also known as the Mesembryanthemaceae, the ice plant family), each of which contains about 2000 species; together they total about 40% of all succulent plants. In addition to these two families there are 6-8 more that are commonly grown by home gardeners and succulent plant enthusiasts. The following list is in alphabetic order. The most popular genera for container culture are indicated by bold type. Taxonomic groupings are changed occasionally as new research information becomes available. But old names that have been in common usage are not easily cast aside. Significant name changes noted in parentheses ( ) are listed at the end of the table.
