Commencement 2021 Ringling College of Art and Design COMMENCEMENT 2021 RINGLING COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN “WE HAVE BECOME A CIRCLE OF LIGHT IN A TIME OF DARKNESS RELENTLESSLY SHINING ONTO THE WORLD.” PAULA RODRIGUEZ RAMIREZ, CLASS OF 2021 ABOUT RINGLING COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN MAJORS OUR STUDENT BODY Since 1931, Ringling College of Art and Design has cultivated the creative spirit BUSINESS OF ART + DESIGN (BA) Currently, 1,627 degree-seeking students are enrolled at Ringling College, and in students from around the globe. The private, not-for-profit, fully accredited 98% are full-time. College offers the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in twelve disciplines and the COMPUTER ANIMATION (BFA) There is no such thing as a typical Ringling College student. Our student body is Bachelor of Arts in two. The College’s rigorous curriculum employs the studio comprised of emerging artists and designers from 48 countries and all across model of teaching and immediately engages students through a comprehensive CREATIVE WRITING (BFA) the United States. Sanders, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies Date ABSTRACT The Write Way to Act addresses the pedagogy of utilizing composition, sociolinguistics and second language acquisition in developing a character for the stage. The assertion is that aspects of the English discipline can be applied by the method actor through the composition of a Character’s Diary, which takes into consideration important theories of sociolinguistics and second language acquisition, to develop a deeper and more meaningful connection to any character an actor may embody. Furthermore, this connection can be re-acquired almost immediately either before a performance or while onstage because the Character’s Diary reveals memories of the character that the actor can relate to and draw upon for emotional recall. This thesis not only addresses the theoretical aspects of such pedagogy but also offers a blueprint of application through my own personal ethnographic study in which I successfully applied this theory to my own character when taking on the role of Mama in, I Remember Mama.

Shaffer, Graduate School Representative ABSTRACT TALES FROM THE SILENT MAJORITY: CONSERVATIVE POPULISM AND THE INVENTION OF MIDDLE AMERICA by Jeffrey Christopher Bickerstaff In this dissertation I show how the conservative movement lured the white working class out of the Democratic New Deal Coalition and into the Republican Majority. I argue that this political transformation was accomplished in part by what I call the "invention" of Middle America. Using such cultural representations as mainstream print media, literature, and film, conservatives successfully exploited what came to be known as the Social Issue and constructed "Liberalism" as effeminate, impractical, and elitist. Chapter One charts the rise of conservative populism and Middle America against the backdrop of 1960s social upheaval. I stress the importance of backlash and resentment to Richard Nixon's ascendancy to the Presidency, describe strategies employed by the conservative movement to win majority status for the GOP, and explore the conflict between this goal and the will to ideological purity. In Chapter Two I read Rabbit Redux as John Updike's attempt to model the racial education of a conservative Middle American, Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, in "teach-in" scenes that reflect the conflict between the social conservative and Eastern Liberal within the author's psyche. I conclude that this conflict undermines the project and, despite laudable intentions, Updike perpetuates caricatures of the Left and hastens Middle America's rejection of Liberalism.

    AND THAT’S A WRAP! Totems Fall Apart, Lone Stars Capture Division in Final Games HONOLULU - One should assume that the final ​ games of the 2015 FBA Regular Season would not be without controversy, and sure enough - many teams ended April 29th celebrating graciously or shaking their heads in despair. The latter was the case for the Edmonton Totems. Once the front-runner of the Mountain Division, they dropped 19 of their last 23 games, and miraculously, they could have still made the playoffs. But the Santa Ana Spectrums - one of the best assemblies of raw talent in 2015 - did not rest up in Game 80, and the Totems opened the door for either the Santa Fe Whips, or the Hawaii Kahunas, to take the coveted eighth spot of the Western Conference. After Santa Fe failed to budge the Montana Howlers, Hawaii’s close win over the Las Vegas Wildcards was enough to give the Kahunas their first playoff berth in history by virtue of divisional wins. For what it’s worth, the Kahunas will now have to prove their worth against the Spectrums when playoffs begin on May 6th. Good luck!
