  • The Unmaking of an Imperial Army: the Indian Army in World War II
Asian Studies Centre St Antony’s College, University of Oxford South Asia Seminar, Week 8 The Unmaking of an Imperial Army: The Indian Army in World War II Tarak Barkawi Reader in International Relations, London School of Economics Tuesday March 7th, 2 p.m. Pavilion Room, St Antony’s College The shock of repeated defeats, massive expansion, and the pressures of operations on multiple fronts transformed the Indian Army in World War II. It had to commission ever greater numbers of Indians as officers. Recruitment of other ranks reached beyond the favoured Martial Races. In the field, officers bent and then broke the rigid ethnic rules around which the army was organized, in small and large ways. The right rations, the right type of recruit, the officer knowledgeable in specific languages or religions, were not always available. Nonetheless, the army managed to recover, reform, and go on to victory. Colonial knowledge and the official Orientalism so evident in the ethnic structuring of the army was less relevant to managing the army at war. In large measure, Indian soldiers fought the Japanese led by a combination of emergency-commissioned nationalists (the new Indian officers) and British officers who were new to India and did not speak their soldiers’ language. The reasons why the Indian Army fought effectively for their colonial rulers were not to be found in stereotypes of Martial Races or South Asian warrior values. Tarak Barkawi is Reader in the Department of International Relations, London School of Economics. He earned his doctorate at the University of Minnesota and specialises in the study of war, armed forces and society with a focus on conflict between the West and the global South.

  • After a Long Illness Captain Umrao Singh VC, Royal Indian Artillery Died on the 21 November 2005 at the Army Research and Referr
After a long illness Captain Umrao Singh VC, Royal Indian Artillery died on the 21 November 2005 at the Army Research and Referral Hospital, New Delhi, after a prolonged illness. He was cremated at his home village of Palra, Haryana State, on 22 November 2005. As a havildar (Sergeant) Umrao Singh was the only non-commissioned officer of either the Royal Artillery or the Indian Artillery to be awarded the Victoria Cross in the Second World War. Umrao Singh won his award for valour in what all gunners regard as their near-sacred duty - defence of their guns. By the end of 1944, General Sir William Slim's 14th Army was poised for a right-flank offensive against Lieutenant-General Sakurai Seizo's 28th Japanese Army in the coastal strip between the Irrawaddy and the Bay of Bengal. General Sir Philip Christison's XV Corps of four divisions was given the job. The offensive was launched on 12th December 1944 but fierce resistance was met by the 81st West African Division advancing down the Kaladan valley, every move forward being challenged by Japanese counter-attack. The 33 Mountain Battery, Indian Artillery, in which Havildar Umrao Singh was a field gun detachment commander, was subjected to a sustained bombardment from Japanese guns. Singh's VC citation sums up perfectly his heroic action in defending his guns against overwhelming odds. [ London Gazette, 31 May 1945 ], Kaladan Valley, Burma, 15 - 16 December 1944, Havildar Umrao Singh, Royal Indian Artillery, Indian Army “In the Kaladan Valley, Burma on 15 / 16 December 1944, Havildar Umrao Singh was in charge of one gun in an advanced section of his battery when it was subjected to heavy fire from 75 mm guns and mortars for one and a half hours prior to being attacked by two Companies of Japanese.

  • The Saga of Grit and Cold Courage
THE SAGA OF GRIT AND COLD COURAGE TRIBUTE TO THE FIGHTERS OF 35 INFANTRY BRIGADE IN 1965 WAR: FIRST HAND ACCOUNT Maj Gen Yashwant Deva, AVSM (Retd) DEDICATED TO The forgotten martyrs of 35 Infantry Brigade, who sacrificed their sarvasva (the entire) — existence, even remembrance At Lord’s Beckoning Slain, thou shall achieve heaven; victorious, thou shall enjoy the earth. Therefore rouse O son of Kunti, resolve to fight. Bhaagvad Gita, Shalok 37, Discourse II i FOREWORD I recall Gen Deva, the author of this book when he was attending the Staff College. Posting as a Brigade Major after the course was indicative of the fact that the officer had done very well at the course. It was more so for a Signals officer, as normally officers from combat arms and not combat support arms got posted to this most important staff appointment for a Major. Nowadays with a Deputy Commander in the rank of Colonel and the Brigade Major upgraded to Lt Col, this has changed. After reading this book, I feel that the author has more than justified his selection as Brigade Major. He was blooded in battle like an infantry soldier and showed valour. He shouldered much responsibility in the operation of his Brigade in all the confusion connected with 1 Corps offensive in the Samba sector of Jammu and Kashmir. Tasks for his Brigade were changing at the drop of the hat and so was its grouping with formations. Yet the Brigade’s performance was creditable. 93 officers and soldiers of the Brigade got martyred in this war.

  • An Entrepreneurship Development Initiative - a Project Designed, Developed and Executed for Indian Army Personnel
Pacific Business Review International Volume 10 Issue 7, January 2018 An Entrepreneurship Development Initiative - A Project Designed, Developed and Executed for Indian Army Personnel. Dr. Rajesh N. Pahurkar, Abstract Assistant Professor, The present study is a case of Social Entrepreneurship. This study was Department of Management Sciences, conducted in three phases spanning for almost one year time. The first Savitribai Phule Pune University, phase was to understand the extent of entrepreneurial skills and Pune abilities possessed by the differently-abled soldiers and the about to retire soldiers of the Indian Army and also to understand the areas in Dr.(Capt.) C.M. Chitale: which the soldiers would like to start their enterprise. An extensive Professor(Retd.), survey to understand the same was done. It was found through the Department of Management Sciences, research that the soldiers possessed several characteristics of an Savitribai Phule Pune University, entrepreneur. They showed a keen interest in Entrepreneurship. Hence Pune in the second phase of the research the researchers developed an Entrepreneurship Development (ED) capsule taking into view the interests of the soldiers.
