Abstract: Iodine deficiency is a global issue and affects around 2 billion people worldwide, with preg- nant women as a high-risk group. Iodine-deficiency prevention began in the 20th century and started with global salt iodination programmes, which aimed to improve the iodine intake status globally. Although it resulted in the effective eradication of the endemic goitre, it seems that salt iodination did not resolve all the issues. Currently, it is recommended to limit the consumption of salt, which is the main source of iodine, as a preventive measure of non-communicable diseases, such as hypertension or cancer the prevalence of which is increasing. -

However, there has been some controversy over whether Zicam, an intranasal zinc gluconate gel purported to fight colds, causes anosmia, or the loss of the sense of smell. Historical evidence has shown that zinc sulfate solutions can cause anosmia in humans along with significant damage to the olfactory epithelium in rodents. However, more recent work has claimed to show that zinc gluconate is less toxic than zinc sulfate. Using an in vitro system to compare the toxicity of zinc sulfate and zinc gluconate on immature and mature rat olfactory sensory neurons, it was found that the toxicity of both zinc salts was similar with zinc sulfate being slightly more toxic than zinc gluconate and occurred at significantly lower concentrations than that found in Zicam nasal gel, which strengthens the epidemiological link between intranasal zinc exposure and anosmia. Mechanistic studies disproved the hypothesis that zinc toxicity was caused by inhibition of the HVCN1 proton channel which would have led to acidosis and apoptotic cell death. It was found that these immature rat olfactory sensory neurons are able to maintain their intracellular pH through a + + - - Na /H exchanger, specifically NHE1, and a Cl /HCO3 exchanger. -

Muscle attributes and selected blood hormones of football players were assessed in response to a nightly supplementation regimen during spring football, over an 8-week period, with pre-post measures. A double-blind randomized study was conducted with ZMA (30 mg zinc monomethionine aspartate, 450 mg magnesium aspartate, and 10.5 mg of vitamin B-6) and placebo (P), n=12 and n=15, respectively. Plasma zinc and magnesium levels were ZMA (0.80 to 1.04 mg/ml; 19.43 to 20.63 mcg/ml ) and P (0.84 to 0.80 mg/ml ; 19.68 to 18.04 mg/ml), respectively (P<0.001). Free testosterone increased with ZMA (132.1 to 176.3 pg/mL), compared to P (141.0 to 126.6 pg/mL) (P<0.001); IGF-I increased in the ZMA group (424.2 to 439.3 ng/mL) and decreased in P (437.3 to 343.3 ng/mL) (P<0.001).
