Little is known about the dynamics of the shorebird populations of the mid Western Australian coastline between Kalbarri and Geraldton, as this area is remote and sparsely populated. We surveyed shorebirds at several sites in this region, including fossil river estuaries from intermittent rivers (Hutt, Bowes and Greenough Rivers) and wetlands on the western shoreline of Hutt Lagoon and around Port Gregory. Totals of 21 migratory shorebird species and 9 Australian-breeding shorebird species were recorded from 64 visits in 2006–2010 and 87 visits in 2017–2018. The highest counts related to Banded Stilt Cladorhynchus leucocephalus (652), Red-capped Plover Charadrius ruficapillus (300) and Red-necked Stint Calidris ruficollis (300). The highest numbers of most species were recorded at Hutt Lagoon and associated semi-permanent wetlands near Port Gregory, with mean counts in 2017–2018 of 109 migratory shorebirds (mainly Red-necked Stints) and 227 Australian-breeding shorebirds (mainly Banded Stilts), from the accessible part of that wetland system. This shows the importance of such wetlands in providing shorebird habitat in the region. None of the wetlands met criteria for international importance. Introduction There is a large stretch of the Western Australian coastline, from Geraldton (425 km north of Perth) to Kalbarri (167 km north of Geraldton), for which little information on shorebirds is available. -

CHAPTER 4 ECOLOGICAL CHARACTER The ecological character of the Eremaean vegetation differs very little in its more important features from the nature of the xeromorphic forms of the Southwest Province. In accordance with the uniformity of the environment it does not show any of the rich grading of the south west. However, to compensate for this deficiency the constitutional characters of the elements attain a greater freedom. To what extent finer details and pecu- larities of the Eremean vegetation result from this is uncertain at present. For, despite the work of Spencer Moore and my own discoveries, most of the Eremean investigation still lies in the future. This is especially so since the dissimilarity between successive years requires a long period of observation before adequate satisfactory information is obtained. a. Lifeforms As an area of highly developed xeromorphism the Western Australian Eremaea represents to a high degree the well-known contrast between a groundwater flora and a rain flora. The groundwater [perennial] flora as already mentioned exhibits a clear preference for the region south of 0o S. We meet tree-like growths, particularly Eucalyptus and Casuarina there, whilst further north they are only found in specially favourable spots. Details will be given in the description of the formations. In general, woody growths are represented by shrubs. In comparison with the Southwest Province there is a marked diminution in the small shrubs which only remain on the sand in very extreme xeromorphic form. They depend on the uncertain help of the winter rain for the complete wakening of their functions. Very often they exhibit the signs of hard seasons - withered branches and flower buds and fruit dried up before ever becoming ripe. -

62015.001.001.0288 INSURANCE THEIVES We own an investment property in Karratha and are sick and tired of being ripped off by scheming insurance companies. There has to be an investigation into colluding insurance companies and how they are ripping off home owners in the Pilbara? Every year our premium escalates, in the past 5 years our premium has increased 10 fold even though the value of our property is less than a third of its value 5 years ago. Come policy renewal date I ring around for quotes and look online only to be told that these insurance companies have to increase their premiums because of the many natural disasters on the eastern seaboard, ie; the recent devastating cyclones and floods like earlier this year or the regular furphy, the cost of rebuilding in the Northwest. Someone needs to tell these thieves that the boom is over in the Pilbara and home owners there should no longer be bailing out insurance companies who obviously collude in order to ask these outrageous premiums. I decided to do a bit of research and get some facts together and approach the federal and local member for Karratha and see what sort of reply I would get. But the more I looked into what insurance companies pay out for natural disasters the more confused I became because the sums just don’t add up! Firstly I thought I would get a quote for a property online with exactly the same specifications as ours in Karratha but in Innisfail, Queensland. This was ground zero, where over the past few years’ cyclones have flattened most of this township. -
