  • United States Military Academy Morgan Farm Arena Indoor Equestrian Facility West Point, New York
Introducing the United States Military Academy Morgan Farm Arena Indoor Equestrian Facility West Point, New York West Point Association of Graduates History In 1846, West Point constructed the largest indoor arena in the world at the time (now Thayer Hall), representing West Point’s commitment to and emphasis on equestrian training. From this training developed many Olympic riders. In all, 40 West Point graduates have gone on to become Olympic riders—not to mention those who competed in polo or pentathlon, like General George S. Patton. Patton competed in the Olympics’ first modern pentathlon in 1912. In this event, Patton put to use the skills learned at West Point and received a perfect score in the horse riding competition, placing fifth overall. Riding is truly an integral part of West Point’s history, and although it is no longer part of the cadet curriculum and the indoor facility is long gone, the strong bond between West Point and the horse endures. Today’s West Point Equestrian Team is a nationally competitive team, competing in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association, which boasts over 400 colleges and nearly 8,000 riders nationwide. West Point riders have consistently placed in championship positions at the regional and national levels. Site The team currently possesses excellent outdoor riding arenas and stable facilities at the Morgan Farm Equestrian Complex. However, unfortunately, these riding facilities do not provide protection from inclement weather and seasonal changes, making it impossible to ensure consistent year-round training. The team is therefore hindered by a significant loss of practice time each year when compared with that of their competitors.

  • Bayesian Analysis of Home Advantage in North American Professional Sports Before and During COVID‑19 Nico Higgs & Ian Stavness*
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Bayesian analysis of home advantage in North American professional sports before and during COVID‑19 Nico Higgs & Ian Stavness* Home advantage in professional sports is a widely accepted phenomenon despite the lack of any controlled experiments at the professional level. The return to play of professional sports during the COVID‑19 pandemic presents a unique opportunity to analyze the hypothesized efect of home advantage in neutral settings. While recent work has examined the efect of COVID‑19 restrictions on home advantage in European football, comparatively few studies have examined the efect of restrictions in the North American professional sports leagues. In this work, we infer the efect of and changes in home advantage prior to and during COVID‑19 in the professional North American leagues for hockey, basketball, baseball, and American football. We propose a Bayesian multi‑level regression model that infers the efect of home advantage while accounting for relative team strengths. We also demonstrate that the Negative Binomial distribution is the most appropriate likelihood to use in modelling North American sports leagues as they are prone to overdispersion in their points scored. Our model gives strong evidence that home advantage was negatively impacted in the NHL and NBA during their strongly restricted COVID‑19 playofs, while the MLB and NFL showed little to no change during their weakly restricted COVID‑19 seasons. In professional sports, home teams tend to win more on average than visiting teams1–3. Tis phenomenon has been widely studied across several felds including psychology4,5, economics6,7, and statistics8,9 among others10.

Summary: The home advantage in basketball is the biggest of the four major American pro sports. Possible Sources of Home Court Advantage in Basketball • Psychological support of the crowd. • Comfort of being at home, rather than traveling. • Referees give home teams the benefit of the doubt? • Teams are familiar with particulars/eccentricities of their home court. • Different distributions of rest between home and away teams (we will focus on this). Previous Literature • Martin Manley and Dean Oliver have studied how the home court advantage differs between the regular season and the playoffs: They found no evidence of a big difference between the home court advantage in the playoffs vs. regular season. Oliver estimated that the home court advantage is about 1% less in the playoffs. • We focus on the regular season. Society, IN the spring of 1890, the Fabian finding itself at a loss for a course of lectures to occupy its summer meetings, was pelledcom- to make shift with a series of papers put " forward under the general heading Socialism in Contemporary Literature." The Fabian " Essayists, strongly pressed to do something or other," for the most part shook their heads ; but " in the end Sydney Olivier consented to take Zola"; I consented to "take Ibsen"; and Hubert Bland undertook to read all the Socialist novels of the day, an enterprise the desperate failure of which resulted in the most amusing paper of the series. William Morris, asked to read a paper on himself, flatly declined, but gave us one on Gothic Architecture. Stepniak also came to the rescue with a lecture on modern Russian fiction ; and so the Society tided over the summer without having to close its doors, but also without having added anything what- vi Preface. ever to the general stock of information on Socialism in Contemporary Literature. After this I cannot claim that my paper on Ibsen, which was duly read at the St James's Restaurant on the 1 8th July 1890, under the presidency of Mrs Annie Besant, and which was the first form of this little book, is an original work in the sense of being the result of a spontaneous ternalin- impulse on my part.
