SOUTH WEST Newquay Beach Newquay, facing the Atlantic Ocean on the North Cornwall Coast, is the largest resort in Cornwall. INTRODUCTION The West Wight Chalk Downland HEAP Area has been defined on the basis of geology, topography and historic landscape character. It forms the western half of a central chalk ridge that crosses the Isle of Wight, the eastern half having been defined as the East Wight Chalk Ridge . Another block of Chalk and Upper Greensand in the south of the Isle of Wight has been defined as the South Wight Downland . Obviously there are many similarities between these three HEAP Areas. However, each of the Areas occupies a particular geographical location and has a distinctive historic landscape character. This document identifies essential characteristics of the West Wight Chalk Downland . These include the large extent of unimproved chalk grassland, great time-depth, many archaeological features and historic settlement in the Bowcombe Valley. The Area is valued for its open access, its landscape and wide views and as a tranquil recreational area. Most of the land at the western end of this Area, from the Needles to Mottistone Down, is open access land belonging to the National Trust. Significant historic landscape features within this Area are identified within this document. The condition of these features and forces for change in the landscape are considered. Management issues are discussed and actions particularly relevant to this Area are identified from those listed in the Isle of Wight HEAP Aims, Objectives and Actions. -

Island Heritage Service Historic Environment Action Plan South-West Wight Coastal Zone Isle of Wight County Archaeology and Historic Environment Service October 2008 01983 823810 archaeology @iow.gov.uk Iwight.com HEAP for South-West Wight Coastal Zone INTRODUCTION This HEAP Area has been defined on the basis of geology, topography land use and settlement patterns which differentiate it from other HEAP areas. Essential characteristics of the South-West Wight Coastal Zone include the long coastline and cliffs containing fossils and archaeological material, the pattern of historic lanes, tracks and boundaries, field patterns showing evidence of open-field enclosure, valley-floor land, historic villages, hamlets and dispersed farmsteads, and vernacular architecture. The Military Road provides a scenic and historically significant route along the coast. The settlements of Mottistone, Hulverstone, Brighstone and Shorwell straddle the boundary between this Area and the West Wight Downland Edge & Sandstone Ridge. Historically these settlements exploited both Areas. For the sake of convenience these settlements are described in the HEAP Area document for the West Wight Downland Edge & Sandstone Ridge even where they fall partially within this Area. However, they are also referred to in this HEAP document where appropriate. This document considers the most significant features of the historic landscape, the most important forces for change, and the key management issues. Actions particularly relevant to this Area are identified from those listed in the Isle of Wight HEAP Aims, Objectives and Actions. ANALYSIS AND ASSESSMENT Location, Geology and Topography • Occupies strip of land between West Wight Downland Edge & Sandstone Ridge and coast. • Coastline within this Area stretches from Compton to Shepherd’s Chine and comprises soft, eroding cliffs with areas of landslip. -

We evaluated the impact of attending an ALERTTM course on the confidence levels and attitudes of healthcare staff in relation to the recognition and management of acutely ill patients. A questionnaire, which examined knowledge, experience, confidence and teamwork, was distributed to participants prior to commencing an ALERTTM course. One hundred and thirty-one respondents agreed to participate in a follow-up questionnaire 6 weeks after completing the course. Respondents reported significantly more knowledge (pre 5.47 ± 1.69, post 7.37 ± 1.22; p < 0.01) in recognising a critically ill patient after attending an ALERTTM course. Mean scores for respondents’ confidence in their ability to recognise a critically ill patient (pre 6.04; post 7.71; t = 11.74; p < 0.01), keep such a patient alive (pre 5.70; post 7.30; t = 10.01; p < 0.01) and remember all the life-saving measures (pre 5.60; post 7.32; t = 11.71; p < 0.01) were increased. -

Officers will continue monitoring the Minerals Strategy 2014 and it will be screened again in 2021. ii) the Dorset Council Local Development Scheme is updated accordingly to reflect these actions. iii) the 2020 Review of the Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole Minerals Strategy 2014 , attached as an Appendix to this report, is made publicly available. Reason for Recommendation: Paragraph 33 of the National Planning Policy Framework 2019 requires that a local plan should be reviewed after five years to consider whether a formal full or partial Plan Review is required. To ensure that Dorset Council complies with this requirement, the Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole Minerals Strategy 2014 was screened to assess whether a full or partial Review was required. It was found that a Review did not need to be initiated this year. The Dorset Council Local Development Scheme needs to be updated to reflect this, and planning guidance requires that the report of the screening exercise is made publicly available. 1. Executive Summary The Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole Minerals Strategy 2014 (MS) was adopted more than five years ago, and as required by the National Planning Policy Framework 2019 it has been assessed to determine whether a formal full (the whole document) or partial (only selected policies) Review is required. -

Isle of Wight Parks, Gardens & Other Designed Landscapes Historic Environment Action Plan Isle of Wight Gardens Trust: March 2015 2 Foreword The Isle of Wight landscape is recognised as a source of inspiration for the picturesque movement in tourism, art, literature and taste from the late 18th century but the particular significance of designed landscapes (parks and gardens) in this cultural movement is perhaps less widely appreciated. Evidence for ‘picturesque gardens’ still survives on the ground, particularly in the Undercliff. There is also evidence for many other types of designed landscapes including early gardens, landscape parks, 19th century town and suburban gardens and gardens of more recent date. In the 19th century the variety of the Island’s topography and the richness of its scenery, ranging from gentle cultivated landscapes to the picturesque and the sublime with views over both land and sea, resulted in the Isle of Wight being referred to as the ‘Garden of England’ or ‘Garden Isle’. Designed landscapes of all types have played a significant part in shaping the Island’s overall landscape character to the present day even where surviving design elements are fragmentary. Equally, it can be seen that various natural components of the Island’s landscape, in particular downland and coastal scenery, have been key influences on many of the designed landscapes which will be explored in this Historic Environment Action Plan (HEAP). It is therefore fitting that the HEAP is being prepared by the Isle of Wight Gardens Trust as part of the East Wight Landscape Partnership’s Down to the Coast Project, particularly since well over half of all the designed landscapes recorded on the Gardens Trust database fall within or adjacent to the project area. -

One clause seemed directly written to me - the President was “not ex- pected to be expert in all the fields covered by the various sections." As most of you will know, unlike past Presidents who have been specialists, I am very much an ordinary member with a general interest in natural history and archaeology, but my membership over many years has widened my knowledge and kept up a spirit of inquiry. With this in mind last May I joined the general meeting exploring the ground around the glass- houses of Wight Salads, somewhere completely new to me. It proved to be two hours of continuous in- terest as we wandered by the new lakes created from the water used in the hydroponic growing system. With experts in identifying grasses, mosses, flowers, birds all to hand, and all more than willing to point out, identify and explain when I asked any question. It was a real illustration of teaching and learning in the best way. -

It has been reported to Island Roads and the owner has been contacted. • A member of the public asked if Saunders Way has been adopted. Cllr Hendry stated that Isle of Wight Council, Island Roads and Barratts had reached agreement. A consultation on the speed limit which concludes on 5th March must be completed before further work can be done. • A member of the public raised concerns about the impact of the completion of Saunders Way on other routes and parking in the town. He will email the ward councillors with his questions for them to follow up. One minutes silence was held in memory of the Facilities Officer Mick Collis who sadly passed away in January. Meeting opened at 6.15p.m. 15/21 APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE No apologies for absence were received. 16/21 DECLARATIONS OF INTERESTS 2.1 Cllr Palin declared a non-pecuniary interest as a member of the Floating Bridge Stakeholders Group. This compares with an average of 4.1 persons per hectare2 for England and a regional average of 4.5 persons per hectare2 for the South East.
