Media Advisory *** FOR USE AS DESIRED 1/2/17 *** MEDIA ADVISORY *** 2017 NFL SCOUTING COMBINE SELECT NFL HEAD COACH & GENERAL MANAGER AVAILABILITY BEGINS WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1 PROSPECT AVAILABILITY BEGINS THURSDAY, MARCH 2 -- New Format and New Location for Media Availability -- The 2017 NFL Scouting Combine media interviews will now take place at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, after previously being housed in Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the Indianapolis Colts. Beginning on Wednesday, March 1, select NFL head coaches and general managers will be available to the media. Prospect availability begins on Thursday, March 2 and runs through Sunday, March 5, as Combine attendees will be available for interviews at various times on specific days based on their assigned position groupings from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm (ET). All media availability will be located in Halls J-K on the first floor of the Indiana Convention Center. The NFL Media Workroom is located in Rooms 233-239 on the second floor of the Indiana Convention Center. The workroom will be open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (ET), March 1 through March 5. Media covering the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine for any or all of its five days must apply for credentials at NFLcommunications.com. After signing in, click on “Event Credentials” under the “Events” section of the homepage. The credential application will be available later this week. The deadline to submit credential applications is Tuesday, February 14. Credentials can be picked up on the second floor of the Indiana Convention Center in the Hoosier walkway directly outside the media workroom beginning at 8:00 am (ET) on Wednesday and Thursday and at 9:00 am (ET) on Friday through Sunday. 2017 NFL SCOUTING COMBINE WHAT: 2017 NFL Scouting Combine WHO: Top Prospects Eligible for the 2017 NFL Draft Select NFL Head Coaches & General Managers WHERE: Media availability will take place in the Indiana Convention Center, Halls J-K (Enter through Capitol Ave. gate, located at Capitol Ave. & Georgia St., or via the Indianapolis SkyWalk).     Indianapolis Colts Fell In Love With Character, Potential Of Ohio State’s Parris Campbell When the Colts went on the clock last Friday with the 59th overall pick in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft, general manager Chris Ballard stood before Indianapolis executives and staffers from the franchise’s war room inside the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center and kicked off the discussion. After the Colts traded down with the Cleveland Browns, swapping second-round picks from 46th to 49th and picking up the 144th overall selection in the fifth round, Indianapolis took former TCU defensive end Ben Banogu (6-3, 250) and had options 10 slots later. As the seven minutes started to tick, Parris Campbell was the first name out of Ballard’s mouth — and the former Ohio State H-back ended up the only one in mind before Colts brass unanimously agreed on the 6-0, 205-pounder. “We liked Parris all the way through the process,” Ballard said May 1 in an all-access video documenting the NFL draft from Indianapolis. “And (head coach) Frank (Reich) loved him.” Before the Colts made it official, Indianapolis gathered April 18 and dissected Campbell as a prospect — which led to rave reviews from Reich. Beyond the numbers from his breakout senior season in 2018 — Campbell caught a school-record 90 passes for 1,063 yards (11.8 average) with a long of 78 and 12 touchdowns across all 14 games — he had an X-factor trait. After conversations with Buckeyes wide receivers coach Brian Hartline, Reich was sold on Campbell.

The National Football League (NFL) conducts a yearly Scouting Combine in an attempt to examine top prospects’ physical characteristics and attributes that are typically sought after in the game of football. The current study focuses on whether an athlete’s performance at the Combine can predict future success at the professional level. The study examined 917 athletes that participated in the Combine from 2004 to 2009. These athletes were categorized into eight different position groups across the National Football League. Measures for the study included six physical ability tests from the Combine, height, weight, and three unique success variables. Correlations and multiple regressions were conducted to examine the impact of Combine performance on future success. Only four of the eight position groups had statistically significant predictions in the study. However, the primary finding of whether a player’s performance at the Combine was able to predict future success in the NFL based on their position is deemed questionable at best. Thus, the study suggests that NFL executives and personnel influence a statistical approach, in combination with professional judgment to account for intangibles and unquantifiable measurements, in order to select an athlete that has the most potential to be a successful player in the National Football League.
