Disaster Management Plan – 2020-21
Chairman, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Cum, Deputy Commissioner, Chikkamagaluru - 577 101 District Disaster Management Authority, Chikkamagaluru District, Karnataka Chikkamagaluru District, Karnataka 08262-230401 (O), 231499 (ADC), 231222 (Fax) [email protected], deo@[email protected], [email protected] F O R E W O R D The bounty of nature with land, water, hills and so on are the beautiful creation of God which the so-called modern human beings cannot create or replicate despite advances in science and technology. The whole responsibility lies on us to maintain God's creation in its pristine state without disturbing or intervening in the ecological balance. It is observed that the more we rise in science and technology, the less we care about protecting and maintaining our environment. Indiscriminate, improper and injudicious use of environment will result in mother nature deviating from its original path and cause hazard to human life and property in the form of disasters. Chikkamagaluru district is one of the hazard prone district in Karnataka on account of landslides, drought, floods etc. The whole of the district has faced unprecedented rains in August 2019 and 2020 which has resulted in loss of human lives and destruction of property which has taught a lesson of prudence and sustainable growth to human beings. This District Disaster Management Plan devises a strategy for reducing the hazards and dangers of all kinds of disasters and accidents. It is a dedicated effort by the DDMA, Chikkamagaluru to prepare a comprehensive District Disaster Management Plan under the leadership of the District Administration. It contains the District Profile, an assessment of vulnerability and a list of possible disasters, risk assessment, the institutional and infrastructural mechanism for facing such disasters, the preparedness of the district to overcome the disasters, an effective communication plan containing the contact numbers of Officers and the standard operating procedures for effectively dealing with the disasters which are likely to occur. -
Bhadra Voluntary Relocation India
BHADRA VOLUNTARY RELOCATION INDIA INDIA FOREWORD During my tenure as Director Project Tiger in the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India, I had the privilege of participating in voluntary relocation of villages from Bhadra Tiger Reserve. As nearly two decades have passed, whatever is written below is from my memory only. Mr Yatish Kumar was the Field Director of Bhadra Tiger Reserve and Mr Gopalakrishne Gowda was the Collector of Chikmagalur District of Karnataka during voluntary relocation in Bhadra Tiger Reserve. This Sanctuary was notified as a Tiger Reserve in the year 1998. After the notification as tiger reserve, it was necessary to relocate the existing villages as the entire population with their cattle were dependent on the Tiger Reserve. The area which I saw in the year 1998 was very rich in flora and fauna. Excellent bamboo forests were available but it had fire hazard too because of the presence of villagers and their cattle. Tiger population was estimated by Dr. Ullas Karanth and his love for this area was due to highly rich biodiversity. Ultimately, resulted in relocation of all the villages from within the reserve. Dr Karanth, a devoted biologist was a close friend of mine and during his visit to Delhi he proposed relocation of villages. As the Director of Project Tiger, I was looking at voluntary relocation of villages for tribals only from inside Tiger Reserve by de-notifying suitable areas of forests for relocation, but in this case the villagers were to be relocated by purchasing a revenue land which was very expensive. -

District Disaster Management Plan (DDMP)
District Disaster Management Plan (DDMP) FOR CHIKKAMAGALURU DISTRICT 2019-20 Approved by: Chairman, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Cum. Deputy Commissioner Chikkamagaluru District, Karnataka Preparerd by: District Disaster Management Authority Chikkamagaluru District, Karnataka OFFICE OF THE DEPUTY COMMISSIONER Chikkamagaluru District, Karnataka Ph: 08262-230401(O); 231499 (ADC); 231222 (Fax) e.mail: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] 1 P R E F A C E Chikkamagaluru district is a district with varied climatic and geographic conditions. While part of the district falls in the Malnad region, another part falls in the plain lands. Therefore the problems faced by these areas may also be different and diverse. Due to unlimited human intervention with nature and exploitation of nature, the frequency and probability of the disasters and accidents have increased drastically in the recent times. The heavy rains of August 2019 has taught the Administration to be alert and prepared for such type of disasters which are unforeseen. On the one hand heavy rains may cause floods, water logging and intense landslides, there may also be situations of drought and famine. In view of this the district has to be ready and gear itself up to meet any situation of emergency that may occur. The District Disaster Management Plan is the key for management of any emergency or disaster as the effects of unexpected disasters can be effectively addressed. This plan has been prepared based on the experiences of the past in the management of various disasters that have occurred in the district. This plan contains the blue print of the precautionary measures that need to be taken for the prevention of such disasters as well as the steps that have to be taken for ensuring that the human suffering and misery is reduced by appropriate and timely actions in rescuing the affected persons, shifting them to safer places and providing them with timely medical care and attention. -

Groundwater Quality Investigations and Modeling in Bhadravathi Town, Karnataka
Special Issue - 2015 International Journal of Engineering Research & Technology (IJERT) ISSN: 2278-0181 ETWQQM -2014 Conference Proceedings Groundwater Quality Investigations and Modeling in Bhadravathi Town, Karnataka B. K. Purandara, T. Chandramohan, M. K. Jose and B. Venkatesh Scientist, National Institute of Hydrology, Hard Rock Regional Center, Belgaum, Karnataka, India Abstract- In India, there is an increasing desire to conserve of some of these chemicals, it is important to investigate their and restore the ecological health and functioning of the rivers movement from the soil surface through the root zone down to and their associated wetlands for human use and biodiversity. In the groundwater table. The rate of movement of a given solute order to achieve this goal, the primary requirement is to assess moves in the soil system depends on the average flow pattern, the minimum flow requirement to keep the ecological balance of on the rate of molecular diffusion, and on the ability of the the river ecosystem. In this connection, an attempt has been porous material to spread the solute as a result of local made to evaluate the existing conditions of the water flow in the variations in the average flow. For proper modeling and Bhadrariver. It is reported by earlier researchers that the understanding of the manner of solute transport in a natural natural flow of Bhadra river has been altered considerably, soil profile, these phenomena must be considered resulting in loss of riparian zones, aquatic habitat and water simultaneously. Understanding these processes will make it quality. Further, it is stated that the Mysore paper mill and Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel industries which are functioning in possible to develop optimum management schemes for Bhadravathi town may also add pollutants to both surface and environmental control with the purpose of preventing soil and ground water resulting in water quality deterioration. -

ABSTRACT Centella asiatica is an important medicinal herb. Studies were conducted to determine the casual organism of leaf spot disease in Centella asiatica in Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary during 2006-09. The foliar disease incidence and severity and distribution pattern of disease in eight forest regions of the sanctuary were determined. The effect of foliar infection on secondary metabolite content was also determined. The present study indicated that Cercospora centellae is the major leaf spot disease causing pathogen in the study regions of the sanctuary. The foliar disease incidence and severity was high in Madla forest region during September-October. The disease is homogeneously distributed in the study area. The secondary metabolites- alkaloids and steroids in diseased foliages decreased with increase in foliar infection due to C. centellae, while phenols and flavonoids increased. The study suggested that foliar infection of C. asiatica by C. centellae
