The present study represents the most comprehensive taxonomic sampling of any freshwater crab family globally, and explores the impact of paleodrainage interconnectivity on cladogenesis among freshwater crabs. Phylogenetic analyses of the total evidence data using maximum-likelihood (ML), maximum parsimony (MP), and Bayesian inference (BI) produced a robust statistically well-supported tree topology that reaffirmed the monophyly of the Afrotropical freshwater crab fauna. -

The central objective of this study was to analyze seasonal variations in site fdelity in C. guanhumi, a species that is intensively exploited in Brazil, in spite of being part of the Ofcial National List of Critically Endangered Species. This species currently sufers multiple severe threats, such as overharvesting and habitat destruction. C. guanhumi were sampled monthly at four fxed sectors that were delim‑ ited at the upper fringe of a restricted-access mangrove at Itamaracá Island between April 2015 and March 2016. One thousand and seventy-eight individuals were captured, measured, sexed, weighed, and their color patterns registered. Of these, 291 individuals were tagged with PIT (Passive Integrated Transponder) tags. Ninety-seven individuals (size range 27.0–62.6 mm carapace width) were successfully recaptured, totaling 135 recapture events. The largest interval between marking and recapture was 331 days. Through the use of mark-recapture-based models, it was possible to 2 estimate the local population as being 1312 ( 417) individuals (mean density 2.23 0.71 ind. m − ). Considering the mean density of burrow openings and individuals,± there were 3.4 burrow openings± per individual. -

Recent systematic research has revealed that Potamonautes brincki comprises two genetically and morphologically distinct population groups. The systematic affinities between these popu- lation groups have remained uncertain. In the present study, the relationship between the popu- lation groups was examined. Eleven populations were collected from high mountain streams in the Western Cape, South Africa and used in the genetic and morphological analyses. Allo- zyme electrophoresis of 13 protein coding loci separated two main population groups: group A (Cape Peninsular groups) and group B (Hottentot’s Holland) at I = 0.73. Two additional genetic groups were evident, with group B being conspecific to group A, and group D being conspecific to group C. Morphological examination of pleopod 1 and the terminal segment of the mandibular palp showed considerable differences between the two main population groups, with groups A and B being similar and groups C and D being similar. The morpho- metric data for the four main groups were examined using discriminant functions analysis and the two main groups were compared using analyses of covariance. -
Evidence for a New Species of River Crab (Decapoda, Brachyura, Potamonautidae) from the Drakensberg, South Africa

Box 13053, Cascades, 3202, South Africa (corresponding author (GG) e-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT Investigations into morphological and genetic differentiation of the potamonautid fauna of south- ern Africa revealed the presence of two morphotypes collected from the Drakensberg, KwaZulu- Natal. Both forms have been regarded as Potamonautes depressus in museum collections. The tax- onomic status of the two forms was investigated genetically and morphometrically using samples from five localities. The two morphotypes could be distinguished on the basis of colour, with the northern morphotype being bright orange in colour, slightly smaller, and with a more thickly set carapace than the brown to green-brown southern morphotype. Allozyme electrophoresis utilizing 21 presumptive loci showed the two morphotypes to separate at a genetic identity value of 0.599. Five loci proved to be diagnostic between the two forms, with strong heterogeneity present at a further three loci. Discriminant functions analysis of seven carapace variables showed the two mor- photypes to be morphometrically distinct. The southern morphotype was identified as Potamonautes depressus s. str., and it was concluded that the northern morphotype represented an undescribed species, described here as Potamonautes clarus sp. nov. The new species is compared to known Potamonautes species from South Africa.
