George Orwell Boys' Weeklies
George Orwell Boys' weeklies You never walk far through any poor quarter in any big town without coming upon a small newsagent's shop. The general appearance of these shops is always very much the same: a few posters for the Daily Mail and the News of the World outside, a poky little window with sweet-bottles and packets of Players, and a dark interior smelling of liquorice allsorts and festooned from floor to ceiling with vilely printed twopenny papers, most of them with lurid cover-illustrations in three colours. Except for the daily and evening papers, the stock of these shops hardly overlaps at all with that of the big news-agents. Their main selling line is the twopenny weekly, and the number and variety of these are almost unbelievable. Every hobby and pastime — cage-birds, fretwork, carpentering, bees, carrier-pigeons, home conjuring, philately, chess — has at least one paper devoted to it, and generally several. Gardening and livestock-keeping must have at least a score between them. Then there are the sporting papers, the radio papers, the children's comics, the various snippet papers such as Tit-bits, the large range of papers devoted to the movies and all more or less exploiting women's legs, the various trade papers, the women's story-papers (the Oracle, Secrets, Peg's Paper, etc. etc.), the needlework papers — these so numerous that a display of them alone will often fill an entire window — and in addition the long series of ‘Yank Mags’ (Fight Stories, Action Stories, Western Short Stories, etc.), which are imported shop-soiled from America and sold at twopence halfpenny or threepence. -
Bessie Bunter Missing Fortune
HILDA RICHARDS BESSIE BUNTER AND THE MISSING FORTUNE CHAPTER I A Fright for the Fourth 'RIPPING weather!' 'Gorgeous! ' 'Just the afternoon for taking some snaps!' 'Rather!' 'And for a picnic!' fat Bessie Bunter put in eagerly. 'I say, you know, dud-don't forget the picnic―' There was a laugh from the crowd of merry-looking schoolgirls gathered on the steps of Cliff House School, and Bessie Bunter, the fattest member of the party blinked in indignant surprise. 'Well, what is there to cackle at in that?' she demanded. 'It is a ripping afternoon for a picnic! ' 'Right, Fatima!' agreed Barbara Redfern, the leader of the party. 'And a picnic there shall be, too. But the main object of the outing is to take snaps. That's why I've brought my camera.' As a matter of fact, they all had cameras-except Bessie. Bessie's camera had departed during the winter in exchange for a few shillings to buy tuck. 'Well, what are we waiting for?' the fat one exclaimed impatiently. 'And, I say, where are we going? I hope it's not too far, you know. I'm famished as it is!' There was another laugh at that. Trust Bessie to put her appetite first! The beauties of the afternoon, the thrill of picture-hunting, were considerations which fat Bessie completely ignored. A picnic was in prospect, and a picnic was Bessie's immediate and only ambition. 'We're waiting for Marcelle,' Barbara Redfern explained, and glanced over her shoulder into the school. 'She forgot her camera, and has gone to her study to fetch it. -

STORY PAPER COLLECTORS' DIGEST VOL. 56 No. 653 MARCH2002 GEMS OF BAMILTONIA from PETE HANGER Of course. it had to be kept dark. Bunter was too busy in envisaging his coming wealth to think much about the shady side of the proceedings. He was willing to admit. as a mauer of argument, that gambling was wrong , or. at least disrep1,1table;but there were e11ceptiuns to every rule - in favour ot" Bunter. Besides. an absolu te certajnty Like this could hardly be called gambling: it was more like a sober and seda te business transaction. Anyhow . if Bunter's fat conscience had a twinge or two on the subject. the twinges were not severe. Bunter was the happy possessor of a very accommodating conscience, and it could always stretch a little when required. Still, the thing had to be kept dark . Beoigbt.ed Headmasters and foolish Fom, masters did not understand such thitigs - even the Remove men, instead or admiring Bunter' s geni us. would simply look on him as a disreputable young rasca l - they might even kick him; Peter Todd , in fact , was sure to kick hirn , if he knew . Bunte r realised that his racing transactions cou ld not be kept too dark . MAGNET 1068 "AU right!'' said Billy Bunte r. Bllnter 's tone, which was fearfully sarcas tic and sardonic, implied. that in point of fact. ii was far from all right! Ttwas, indeed, all wrong . Billy Bunt er was wrathy. He was indignant. He was deeply irritated. He had not been treated with the distinction due to such a guest ever since be had arrived at Wharton Lodge.
