  • Sutton Coldfield Town Council Referendum Group
Pascoe, Mark From: Ken Rushton Sent: 27 September 2015 10:56 To: reviews; Pascoe, Mark Cc: Subject: RE: Birmingham Ward Boundaries - Sutton Coldfield Residents' Submission Hello Mark, Many thanks for the work you are doing. As you can see below and attached, Paul Long has been co-ordinating the formal response of our group. We are a wide group comprising all of the Sutton Forums and Resident Groups and individuals, This covers a large area of Sutton which has a long history as a Town going back before HenryV111 made Sutton a Royal Town because of his contacts here and his hunting in the park. Sutton has recently taken up Government Localism Legislation we have worked closely with the DCLG, and we have been granted Town Status which is currently being legalised. We have attended all of your public meetings, we realise that you have a job to do, and indeed we support your general aims. May I just say that because we are a very close community If we have a red line it is to maintain our existing Royal Sutton Coldfield borders. That has come to us very clearly from our public meetings with residents. Our consultations have brought forward a variance in views, and we would also like to refer you to the comment of Nick Corbett, and Tracy Cattell, who are both within our group and have placed forward valuable comment. I know that all have very much tried to remain within your aims and guidelines. Also we have worked very closely with Councillor Rob Pocock who works closely with us and is very knowledgeable of the general area.

  • The Poplars, 204 Birmingham Road
THE POPLARS 204 Birmingham Road, Wylde Green – the oldest of the large houses on Birmingham Road. By Alan Howells History of the Wylde Green area. Sutton Coldfield originated from a Saxon village; it is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was a royal manor. It developed into a medieval market town under the Earls of Warwick, with much of the surrounding forest and chase used for hunting. The Royal Town was incorporated by a charter of Henry VIII in 1528 as a self-governing town. The small town centre was surrounded by extensive commons (including Sutton Park) and farm lands. The area to the south of the town (now Wylde Green) between Maney and Erdington village consisted of uncultivated commons interspersed with agricultural land, dominated by the large Wylde Green Farm. Across this wild area ran the main road from Birmingham through Sutton Coldfield and beyond to Lichfield and towns to the north. This is Birmingham Road, a busy road from 1750 onwards with many horse-drawn carriages and carts travelling along it. It became a turnpike road in 1806, with trustees to take tolls and repair and improve the carriageway. There were fields alongside the road and open commons not far away. The Sutton Coldfield Enclosure Act of 1824 provided for the common land in Sutton to be allotted to private owners; this included wide roadside verges, such as a narrow strip on the corner of Green Lanes. This and part of the nearby field was to be the site of the first large house to be built on Birmingham Road in the early 1800s, “The Poplars”.

  • Wylde Green Farm Sutton Coldfield
Wylde Green Farm Sutton Coldfield By Alan J. H. Howells. Sutton's Farmland On the south side of Sutton Coldfield, the borough boundary of the town, before it became part of Birmingham in 1974, was near Chester Road; in the early 20th century, Erdington Urban District Council lay to the south of this boundary. Until the second half of the century, travelling along Birmingham Road towards the south, most of the town's houses finished at Maney, with its smithy and travellers' inn, 'The Horse and Jockey'. Much of the remaining land between Maney and the borough boundary near Chester Road was agricultural, with fields and farms. This formed a green belt from Boldmere (common and waste land) eastward through Wylde Green and Penns (farmland) to Walmley Village (commons) and 'Beyond the Wood'. (See map A) Location of the Farm Wylde Green Farm had been farming an area of this green belt for centuries. The farm was situated on the east (Walmley) side of Birmingham Road at Wylde Green, just off Wylde Green Road, behind the large, ostentatious Wylde Green House. There were only a few early Victorian large houses built in the area before 1850, and these were situated in the countryside along the edge of the rural Birmingham to Sutton turnpike road at Wylde Green. These residences had stables and carriage houses to accommodate their means of transport to and from their businesses, usually in Birmingham. The remainder of the area was fields, let out to tenant farmers or smallholders by their wealthy owners. A transport revolution in the area started in 1862 with the opening of the London and North Western Railway line from Birmingham to Sutton, with stations at Chester Road and Wylde Greenl This resulted in land being used for building on the western (Boldmere) side of Birmingham Road, including fields belonging to the farm.

  • A Petition of 1683 Analysis by Jim May, Commentary by Roger Lea
A PETITION OF 1683 ANALYSIS BY JIM MAY, COMMENTARY BY ROGER LEA When Sutton Coldfield became a borough in 1528, it seemed to be passing from medieval feudalism to modern democracy. The new Corporation had 25 members — a Warden (mayor) and Society (corporation) - elected from a population of less than 1,000, so it must have seemed impossible for the Corporation to be unrepresentative. However, the members of the Corporation were elected for life, and any vacancies were filled by nominees of the corporate body. Since the corporation managed valuable resources and property, members were tempted to use their office for private gain, and even if they were scrupulously honest, their neighbours who were excluded from membership began to suspect them. Sometimes things reached such a pass that inhabitants appealed to higher authority to put a stop to perceived abuses on the part of the Corporation. One of the most contentious issues was the felling of timber to raise capital — often this was done in the Sutton Park woods, where the felling of trees tends to cause an outcry to this day. Sutton had very extensive commons, probably over 8,000 acres (including the Park) at the time of the Charter. The Charter contained a clause permitting anyone to take in up to 60 acres of the commons and build a house there, paying a nominal rent. However, this was rescinded by a special Commission in 1580, partly because of malpractice by members of the Corporation, but also because the inhabitants could see their rights of common becoming less valuable as large tracts of the less barren parts of the commons were fenced off.
