Place Saint-Michel The Place Saint-Michel is simple – a triangle between two streets, uniform buildings along both, designed by the same architect, a walk of smooth cobblestone. The centerpiece is St. Michael defeating a devil; far above them are four statues symbolizing the four cardinal virtues of prudence, fortitude, temperance, and justice. This monument came to be because of the 1848 Revolution and a cholera epidemic in Paris that followed it which killed thousands. This idea of abstract concepts given human form had been popular during the Revolution, the big one, representing the kind of big virtues – like the Four Cardinal Virtues – that everyone could strive for, instead of a single human being whose actions and legacy would turn people against each other. Simultaneous with the creation of Place Saint-Michel, Napoleon III’s renovation brought the Boulevard Saint-Michel into being, and that is the next part of our walk. Facing the fountain with the river at your back, walk on Boulevard Saint-Michel, it’s the street to your left. Walk away from the river along that street. Ultimately, you’ll be turning left on Rue des Écoles, but it’ll be about five minutes to get there, and you can listen to the next track on the way. French Revolution Pamphlets Collection 544 Items, 1779-1815 16 Boxes; 4.8 cu. ft. History The French Revolution Pamphlets Collection was purchased in 1973 from Mrs. Frances Reynolds. It was originally acquired by Ball State University to assist an increasing number of history and French students in their research and studies. It was also purchased in the hopes that Ball State’s Ph.D. program in History would be approved in the same year. It was meant to be a foundation for research in the field of modern Europe. At the time of acquisition, Dr. Richard Wires, chairman of the Department of History, wrote in support of the purchase, stating "… we have an increasing number of students who do work in this period for History and French credit and such source material is extremely valuable for their research and studies." Though the Ph.D. program never came to fruition, the French Revolution Pamphlet Collection remains an important resource for students and researchers. The effects of the French Revolution were far reaching and global. The resulting wars propelled Britain to global dominance. France’s navy was in shambles and its empire lost. Spain and Holland were broken as imperial powers. Radical ideas on rights, citizenship, and role of the state developed. The revolution heavily influenced conceptions of liberty and democracy. It also promoted nationalism and citizenship. Many historians consider the French Revolution as the beginning of Modern Europe. The example of the American Revolution and the growth of new ideas amongst the Bourgeoisie began to stir up revolutionary ideas among the French. -

This article examines the contributions of its curator, Natalia Erenburg, and the project’s instiga- tor, Iakov Tugendkhold, who wrote the catalogue essay and headed the committee— both of whom were artists who became critics, historians, and collectors. The article elucidates the show’s rationale and selection of exhibits, the critical response to it and its legacy. It also discusses the artistic circles of Russian Paris in which the project origi- nated, particularly the Académie russe. Finally, it examines the project in the context of earlier efforts to present Russian folk art in Paris, and shows how it—and Russian folk art as a source and object of collecting and display—brought together artists, collec- tors, and scholars from the ranks of the Mir iskusstva [World of Art] group, as well as the younger avant-gardists, and allowed them to engage Parisian and European audi- ences with their own ideas and artworks.
