Lichens are a unique group of plants, comprising of two micro-organisms, fungus (mycobiont), an organism capable of producing food via photosynthesis and alga (photobiont). These photobionts are predominantly members of the chlorophyta (green algae) or cynophyta (blue-green algae or cynobacteria). The peculiar nature of lichens enables them to colonize variety of substrate like rock, boulders, bark, soil, leaf and man-made buildings. -
Revision of the Lichen Genus Aspicilia in Sweden
SWEDISH TAXONOMY INITIATIVE RESEARCH REPORT Project period: 2005–2007 Anders Nordin Museum of Evolution, Uppsala University LICHENS: Revision of the lichen genus Aspicilia in Sweden The Swedish representatives of the lichen genus Aspicilia have been revised. The species have been studied in the field in different parts of the country, and material has been collected, altogether c. 500 samples. Herbarium material from Uppsala (UPS) and a number of additional herbaria has also been studied. Total DNA has been extracted from c. 250 collections not older than 10 years. Morphology and chemistry have been studied with traditional methods, including HPLC. Of the 74 species recorded in Sweden only about 45 remain, including a number of undescribed species, two of which have been described (Nordin et al. 2011). The decreased number is a result of synonymizations (Nordin et al. 2007, Nordin 2013, 2015) and disclosure of incorrect determinations, and one species, Aspicilia moenium, is not an Aspicilia but belongs in Acarosporaceae (Nordin et al. 2009). From the extracted DNA, ITS sequences have been produced from all samples, and from a reduced number also nuLSU and mtSSU sequences. The ITS sequences have been used for evaluation of species delimitations. Sequences from specimens resembling the types of the species known from one or a few collections have been of particular importance. ITS sequences have also been used for phylogenetic analyses. The groups resulting from these are robust and are largely supported by analyses of the nuLSU and mtSSU sequences. The latter were used in a study of the phylogeny at family level (Nordin et al. -

Teuvoa saxicola differs from other Teuvoa species by its saxicolous habitat, and its yellow brown, thick thallus. Teuvoa alpina resembles T. junipericola from western USA, but differs by its smaller ascospores and its higher altitude habitat. The morphological characters of the new species are illustrated. New material is described of T. tibetica, the only species previously recorded from China. The morphological and phylogenetic characteristics of the three species are discussed and compared with similar taxa. Key words—Megasporaceae, Pertusariales, Lobothallia, lichens, taxonomy Introduction The lichen genus Teuvoa Sohrabi & S.D. Leav. (Pertusariales, Megasporaceae) was established based on the analysis of molecular sequence data and morphological characters (Sohrabi & al. 2013). The lichen family Megasporaceae has six genera: Aspicilia, Circinaria, Lobothallia, Megaspora, Sagedia, and Teuvoa (Schmitt & al. 2006, Lumbsch & al. 2007, Nordin & al. 2010, Sohrabi & al. 2013). Phylogenetic analysis by Sohrabi & al. (2013) supports Teuvoa as the sister group to Lobothallia. Teuvoa is characterized by its 8-spored asci, absence of extrolites, rather short conidia and ascospores, lack of a subhypothecial algal layer, and different substratum preferences (Sohrabi & al. 2013). Stenroos1 Key words Abstract Though most of the lichenicolous fungi belong to the Ascomycetes, their phylogenetic placement based on molecular data is lacking for numerous species. In this study the phylogenetic placement of 19 species of cladoniicolous species lichenicolous fungi was determined using four loci (LSU rDNA, SSU rDNA, ITS rDNA and mtSSU). The phylogenetic Pilocarpaceae analyses revealed that the studied lichenicolous fungi are widespread across the phylogeny of Lecanoromycetes. Protothelenellaceae One species is placed in Acarosporales, Sarcogyne sphaerospora; five species in Dactylosporaceae, Dactylo Scutula cladoniicola spora ahtii, D. deminuta, D. glaucoides, D. parasitica and Dactylospora sp.; four species belong to Lecanorales, Stictidaceae Lichenosticta alcicorniaria, Epicladonia simplex, E. stenospora and Scutula epiblastematica. The genus Epicladonia Stictis cladoniae is polyphyletic and the type E. sandstedei belongs to Leotiomycetes. Phaeopyxis punctum and Bachmanniomyces uncialicola form a well supported clade in the Ostropomycetidae. Epigloea soleiformis is related to Arthrorhaphis and Anzina. Four species are placed in Ostropales, Corticifraga peltigerae, Cryptodiscus epicladonia, C. galaninae and C. cladoniicola -

Abstracts for IAL 6- ABLS Joint Meeting (2008) AÐALSTEINSSON, KOLBEINN 1, HEIÐMARSSON, STARRI 2 and VILHELMSSON, ODDUR 1 1The University of Akureyri, Borgir Nordurslod, IS-600 Akureyri, Iceland, 2Icelandic Institute of Natural History, Akureyri Division, Borgir Nordurslod, IS-600 Akureyri, Iceland Isolation and characterization of non-phototrophic bacterial symbionts of Icelandic lichens Lichens are symbiotic organisms comprise an ascomycete mycobiont, an algal or cyanobacterial photobiont, and typically a host of other bacterial symbionts that in most cases have remained uncharacterized. In the current project, which focuses on the identification and preliminary characterization of these bacterial symbionts, the species composition of the resident associate microbiota of eleven species of lichen was investigated using both 16S rDNA sequencing of isolated bacteria growing in pure culture and Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) of the 16S-23S internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region amplified from DNA isolated directly from lichen samples. Gram-positive bacteria appear to be the most prevalent, especially actinomycetes, although bacilli were also observed. Gamma-proteobacteria and species from the Bacteroides/Chlorobi group were also observed. Among identified genera are Rhodococcus, Micrococcus, Microbacterium, Bacillus, Chryseobacterium, Pseudomonas, Sporosarcina, Agreia, Methylobacterium and Stenotrophomonas . New species and new records of American lichenicolous fungi. – Herzogia 16: 41–90. A total of 153 species of lichenicolous fungi are reported from America. Five species are described as new: Abrothallus pezizicola (on Cladonia peziziformis, USA), Lichenodiplis dendrographae (on Dendrographa, USA), Muellerella lecanactidis (on Lecanactis, USA), Stigmidium pseudopeltideae (on Peltigera, Europe and USA) and Tremella lethariae (on Letharia vulpina, Canada and USA). Six new combinations are proposed: Carbonea aggregantula (= Lecidea aggregantula), Lichenodiplis fallaciosa (= Laeviomyces fallaciosus), L. lecanoricola (= Laeviomyces lecanoricola), L. opegraphae (= Laeviomyces opegraphae), L. pertusariicola (= Spilomium pertusariicola, Laeviomyces pertusariicola) and Phacopsis fusca (= Phacopsis oxyspora var. fusca). The genus Laeviomyces is considered to be a synonym of Lichenodiplis, and a key to all known species of Lichenodiplis and Minutoexcipula is given. The genus Xenonectriella is regarded as monotypic, and all species except the type are provisionally kept in Pronectria. A study of the apothecial pigments does not support the distinction of Nesolechia and Phacopsis.
