FIRST LADY’S MESSAGE

First Lady ’s Message By: Linda Trott I have fond memories of a priest, Father An Vu, who I worked with at St. Mary of the Assumption Church. Father would dress up as Saint Nicholas on his feast day, December 6th, and go to the school to bring children candy. I recently have heard of others that have started the tradition of having children put out their shoes so they can be filled with candy. I came across this prayer St. Nicholas Day of Blessing of Candy Canes. It speaks of preparing our homes and hearts for the feast of Christmas.

St. Nicholas Day of Blessing of Candy Canes

Good St. Nicholas, we honor you on this your holy feast day. We rejoice that you are the patron saint and the holy symbol of joy for many peoples of many lands.

Come, great-hearted saint, and be our patron and companion as we, once again, prepare our homes and hearts for the great feast of Christmas, the birth of the Eternal Blessing, Jesus Christ.

May these sweets, these candy canes, be a sign of Advent joy for us. May these candy canes, shaped just like you ’s staff, be for us a sign of your benevolent care.

We rejoice that you are the holy bringer of gifts and that so many have been delighted through your great generosity. Help us to be as generous of heart.

Wherever these candy canes are hung, on tree or wall or door, may they carry with them the bright blessing of God. May all who shall taste them experience the joy of God upon their tongues and in their hearts.

Wishing each of you and your loved ones a joyous Advent and a very Merry Christmas!

SOCCER SHOOTOUT

Soccer Shootout By: Brain Trott (Email: [email protected]) & Walt Williams (Email: [email protected]

On a bright, but windy Fall day that also saw several regional soccer tournaments, 19 children participated in the Maryland State Council Soccer Shootout. This culminates a year of Soccer Shootouts at the Council and District levels where hundreds of children did their best at penalty kicks, throw ins, and distance kicks to advance from the Council to the District and eventu- ally the State. None of this could happen without the support of many Knights throughout the State at the Council, District and State levels.

Today’s event was no exception. Knights from all over the State came to help with today’s events. The following Knights volunteered for the day’s event: DD18 Bill Newbrough, DW24 Jim Ryan, DD22 George Nichols, Regional Advisor Tony Durso, DD9 Stephen Coker, DD10 Chris Coker, DD7 Gary Heil, DD15 Jeff Koscho, DD19 Greg Lynch, DW16 Mike Landolt, FS Mike Thewes (14099), Life Director Roger Donnelly, PR Director Rich Boehm, State Photographer John Fox, Community Director Terry Waters, Soccer co-chair Brian Trott and Kate, Soccer co-chair Walt Williams. We thank all of them for their service to our Youth. We thank Archbishop Spaulding High School for the use of their field for this great event.

The Knights of Columbus welcomes this special opportunity to offer for veneration a major relic of the patron of parish priests, whose holiness and integrity is a model for clergy and laity alike.

Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

We will have the opportunity to venerate the relic on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC from 1:00 pm to4:30 pm and again Monday December 10 through Wednesday Decem- ber 12 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Biography

Early Life and Struggles

Born in a small village in France in 1786, Jean Vianney and his family suffered through the dark years of the French Revolution, when the faith was attacked, churches were destroyed, and , priests and religious martyred. So dangerous were the times that young Jean had to receive his first Holy Communion in secret from a faithful priest. Yet hardship only increased Jean’s desire to serve Jesus and his people. After the Reign of Terror ended in France, and following the Napoleonic wars, young Jean entered the seminary, where he met with more obstacles. He found studies difficult, struggling especially with Latin, and was about to be dismissed from the semi- nary when an official of his diocese interceded. Knowing the young man to be earnest and prayerful, the vicar general asked the seminary rector some simple questions: “Is he pious? Has he a devotion to Our Lady? Does he know how to say his ro- sary?” The rector admitted that Jean was “a model of piety.” The vicar general said that he should continue his studies and “the grace of God will do the rest.” At Jean Vianney’s ordination in 1815, the vicar general said, “The Church wants not only learned priests but, even more, holy ones.”

The Curé of Ars

Father Vianney was assigned to the small farming community of Ars, whose parish consisted of 260 people. Walking along the road, towing a few possessions in a cart, he thanked a local boy who pointed him the way, saying, “You have shown me the way to Ars; I will show you the way to heaven.” The political turbulence, anti-clericalism and religious skepticism of the age had taken their toll on the village, and the practice of the faith was poor. Father Vianney undertook a life of heroic penance and prayer to draw his people away from sin and closer to God. Known for his wise spiritual counsels and the gift of reading hearts, he soon became a “prisoner” of the confessional, hearing confessions for up to eighteen hours a day, as people came from across Europe and beyond to see him. He also exercised great charity, building an orphanage for homeless children and receiving beggars with an open heart and hand.

Due to his success in bringing souls to Christ, he became a target of the devil, who confronted the priest on various occasions. Undeterred, Father Vianney did not fall for the devil’s tricks and dismissed strange events by saying, “It’s just the devil.”

Jean Vianney died on August 4, 1859, at the age of 73. Nearly 1,000 people attended his funeral, including the bishop and priests of the diocese. On October 3, 1873, Pius IX proclaimed him Venerable, and on January. 8, 1905, Pope Pius X be- atified him. Saint Jean Vianney was canonized by Pope Pius XI on May 31, 1925. In 1929, the Holy Father declared him pa- tron of parish priests. His feast day is August 4th

As the new Marian Icon is brought on pilgrimage through the jurisdiction, councils will host the Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians Icon for a prayer service at their parish.

Like its predecessors, the program features a Marian image, this time of Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians. Each Knights of Columbus jurisdiction receives several Marian images, which serve as the centerpieces for prayer services conducted in churches and council meeting places throughout the Order for the duration of the initiative. This year, the prayer service is in- tended to raise awareness of the plight of Christians persecuted for their faith and to stand in prayerful solidarity with them

Hospitality Room Responsibility

Under-aged youth have been known to visit convention hotels in order to obtain alcohol- ic beverages. This can cause a liability problem for both the State, and the local Council hosting the hospitality room.

In an effort to protect all of our Councils, the convention badges of those conventioneers who are under 21 years of age will have a yellow stripe on the badge to signify those conventioneers are under 21 years of age. All hospitality room workers are asked to in- spect the convention badge to ensure that they serve alcoholic beverage only to those 21 and over. Violations could result in a loss of future hospitality room assignments.

Please help the hospitality room managers by reminding all those to keep their conven- tion badge displayed at all times.

If you plan to have balloons in or around your hospitality room you cannot use helium or any other gas that will allow the balloons to rise to the ceiling.
