Winter The Alpe d’Huez Ski Area has a combined total of 250km of downhill skiing, with 135 individual pistes, served by 80 ski lifts. These ski lifts are fast and efficient getting you to the top of the mountain in good time. The lift pass for Alpe d’Huez allows you to ski for a couple of days in some other resorts including Les Deux Alpes. The ski area is open from beginning December to the end of April and often provides good weather. In midwinter the runs are usually snow sure due to extensive snowmaking on the main runs above Alpe d’Huez. All levels of skier ability, from beginner to expert, are well-catered for in Alpe d’Huez. It provides large networks of green runs directly above the village making it a great place to start learning. Alpe d’Huez is especially good for experts as not only does it have its fair share of blacks and off piste it also has the longest black in the alps which is in fact the longest of any type of slope in the alps. The Sarenne is 16km long and provides a challenging yet equally satisfying run to competent skiers. Summer The first thing to mention about summer in Alp d’Huez is of course the Tour de France which provides stage 18 of the worlds most famous bike race. It is therefore an ideal location for a fan to see the worlds best cyclists navigate the winding roads and 21 hairpin bends leading up to this dual season resort. You can, if you feel you are up to it, challenge yourself to try and replicate the stage. However if you would prefer a less strenuous activity there are 36 routes and over 250km of cycling trails across the mountains with varying degrees of difficulty to choose from. If cycling is not your thing then try There are around 230km of marked hiking trails with beautiful scenery and stunning lakes within walking distance of the resort. You can do anything from a gentle stroll to a three day hike doing it all on foot or getting some help from the lifts still in operation.
