Amateur Television Network Amateur Television Network Microwave Band Use in Arizona, California & Nevada Background: Arizona Link Map Amateur Television Network (ATN) is a group of amateur television clubs (chapters) in many of the states within the United States. Most chapters have repeaters, many of them are linked via microwave. Most repeaters have an input or output within the microwave bands using both analog and digital modes. We have chapters in the following states: Alabama, Arizona, California (a north and a south chapter), Delaware, Florida, Georgia. Illi - nois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico and Ohio. Most of our chapters support public service to California - Nevada Link Map provide pictures during drills, disaster and large public events where crowd control is important to public safety officials. UHF and Microwave band usage: 70 cm, 33 cm, 23 cm, 13 cm, 9 cm, and 5 cm. Linking is primarily in the 13 cm, 9cm bands and 5 cm bands. VSB (filtered AM) analog and DVB-T digital are the modes used as repeater inputs and outputs in the 70 cm, 33 cm and 23 cm bands and FM used in the 23 cm and higher bands. Most linking uses FM mode allowing up to 600 line resolution and no latency. Our largest linked repeater system is in the Ord Mt. Link Equipment southwestern states with seven repeaters linked in Southern California and Nevada and Arizona with three linked ATV repeaters. Ari - zona is currently building their microwave sys - tem towards California to joint the Notice the California- frequency Nevada system. 23 &13 cm 10’ Link Dish (see link maps on to Las Vegas the right column) The image in the monitor is from Santiago Peak’s 5910 MHz FM output (omni) received at 5 cm Ord Mt. Link & Jobs Peak 39 miles distance then relayed on 8’ Link Repeater Site. 5737.5 MHz to Ord Mountain 41 miles distance. Dish to LA The image is then link to Mt. Potosi 103 miles distance on 2417.5 MHz to service Las Vegas. Page 1 of 3 Santiago Peak (ATN-CA Hub) 1253.25 MHz PA Oat Mountain has a 3380 MHz FM 5910 MHz PA output with 100 watts ERP that has no QRM as compared to it’s older 919.25 MHz VSB output with 800 Microwave RX watts ERP due to part 15 and WiFi and Link RX 5910 MHz TX devices in the band. 13 cm & 5 cm Oat Mountain picks up the Santiago 1253.25 MHz VSB TX Peak 5910 MHz FM and links back on 2417.5 MHz. Oat Mt. 3380 MHz Coverage Map 70 cm VSB & DVB-T RX Santiago Peak is the hub for the Southern Cal - ifornia system. All of the non hub repeaters use the Santiago Peak 5910 MHz Oat Mt. Jobs Pk, and Snow Pk. transmit back to Santiago Peak on 2417.5 MHz and Mt. Wilson on 5712.5 MHz. The purpose of this paper is to explain Digital-ATV (DATV) to other hams, with the hope that it might make the transition from analog-ATV to Digital-ATV a little more straightforward. The paper begins with a review and comparison of various commercial DTV standards that are in use around the world. A top-down design methodology session is then conducted to sort through a number of design alternatives to plan a DATV station. The planning session chooses the DVB-S standard for DATV over the competing United States- based ATSC standard. The paper concludes by describing the Forward-Error-Correction factors and Symbol-Rate factors that determine the RF bandwidth for a DVB-S DATV station. The commercial TV broadcast industry began a transition from analog TV to digital TV (DTV) starting in the mid 90s. Several different, DTV systems were developed for different applications, such as over the air terrestrial broadcast, satellite broadcast and cable distribution. Each system had it's unique propagation characteristics and as a result, it's coding implementation. For amateur DTV, the system adopted should be optimized for terrestrial propagation where "multi-path" is always an issue. TV signals received from satellites, or directly over a CATV network are not subject to multi-path. Thus such DTV systems are less suitable for amateur DTV. The DTV system adopted by Boulder, Colorado and other Colorado Front Range radio amateurs is called DVB-T, or Digital Video Broadcast - Terrestrial. It is NOT the ATSC (8-VSB) system used in the USA for commercial TV broadcast over the air, nor for transmission in cable TV (CATV). It is the system developed in Europe and used by most of the rest of the world for broadcast DTV. Thus, in the USA, you can NOT use directly your home TV receiver to receive DVB-T. The reasons, we have adopted a European standard rather than an American standard are primarily based upon cost and availability of transmitting equipment and also on the superior multi-path performance of DVB-T over ATSC.
