Ise-Shima National Park Lies on the Shima Peninsula, Located in the Center of Mie Prefecture in Western Japan
A scared landscape featuring the historical site of Ise Jingu Grand Shrine, as well as a picturesque coastal route and bountiful seascape 12 Ise-Shima Ise-Shima National Park lies on the Shima Peninsula, located in the center of Mie prefecture in Western Japan. Ise-Shima National Park includes the municipalities of Ise, Toba, Shima, and Minami-Ise, occupying a vast area of National Park nearly 60,000 hectares. The park is broadly divided into two areas: the inland area which is home to Ise Jingu and its surrounding forests; and the coastal area which is characterized by an archipelagic landscape with intricate ria coasts. The interaction between people and nature is very profound in the region, and the essence of this relationship can be observed in the ancient tradition of ama, female diver, fishing, among other traditional cultural practices that have developed around Ise Jingu over the millennia. The wisdom to enjoy the bounties of nature in a sustainable manner is figured prominently in Ise Jinguʼs Shikinen Sengu, a ritual held once every 20 years whereby the shrine is rebuilt in its entirety. The region has a long history of providing seafood to the Imperial Court and Ise Jingu, and the Manyoshu (Japanʼs oldest poetry compilation) refers to the region as Miketsu Kuni or the "land of divine off erings". Thus, the region boasts a rich marine environment home to diverse aquatic life, including Japanese spiny lobster, abalones, turban shells, oysters, tunas, red sea breams, and various types of seaweed. The Kuroshio sea current has blessed the region with a warm climate, which has led to the development of Ise Jinguʼs lush forest and dense evergreen forests that cling to the foothills of the mountainous regions.

9 Recent Attempt towards Environmental Restoration of Enclosed Coastal Seas: Ago Bay Restoration Project Based on the New Concept of Sato-Umi Osamu MATSUDA＊ Abstract Since the present status of the enclosed seas along the coast of Japan is more or less "damaged" or "deteriorated" mainly due to prolonged impact of human activities, environmental restoration followed by rehabilitation of the natural ecosystem is one of the most important subjects to be tackled from the view point of both environmental conservation and living resource management. Ago Bay is one of the deteriorated areas especially from the viewpoint of aquaculture grounds in Japan. Although the bay is known to be a world-famous cradle of pearl culture, conditions of the bay in terms of sediment quality, dissolved oxygen and harmful algal blooms have deteriorated during the long history of pearl culture. The ongoing "Environmental Restoration Project on Enclosed Coastal Seas" in Ago Bay mainly deals with restoration of deteriorated tidal flats and seagrass beds and also development of environmental forecasting technology based on environmental monitoring and modeling. Since the project conducted under the collaboration program of the Japan Science and Technology Agency with industries, academies and public services includes not only scientific and technological studies but also components of environmental education, environmental management and wider cooperation with varieties of stakeholders, it can be a model of environmental restoration and management of enclosed coastal seas. The outline of the project as well as its present status and future perspective is introduced with particular emphasis on the new concept of Sato- Umi, which in Japanese means coastal sea under the harmonization of sustainable wise use with conservation of appropriate natural environment and habitat conditions.

Ise-Shima National Park: Yokoyama View Point Reopens, Fully Renovated In accordance with the March 2016 interministerial initiative of “Our Vision to Support the Future of Japan Through Tourism,” the Ministry of the Environment is promoting the “Project to Fully Enjoy National Parks” with the aim of branding Japan’s national parks as world class. While there are 34 national parks in Japan in total, eight of them have been selected for leading and focused implementation of the project. They are: Akan-Mashu National Park, Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Nikko National Park, Ise-Shima National Park, Daisen-Oki National Park, Aso-Kuju National Park, Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park and Keramashoto National Park. At Ise-Shima National Park, the Yokoyama Picnic Site has been completely refurbished and is now open to the public. The picnic site commands a breathtaking view of Ago Bay, a major scenic element of the national park. To help visitors appreciate the natural beauty with comfort, the site has been renovated into an elegant view point with the newly-constructed Yokoyama Tenkū (Sky View) Café Terrace and other facilities. From the café terrace with a cup of coffee in hand, you will enjoy a panoramic view of Sato-umi (coastal area) in which nature and human life melt into each other.
