From Alignment to Commitment: The Early Work of James Kelman Terence Patrick Murphy James Kelman (© BBC, 2002) Abstract In Marxism and Literature (1977), Raymond Williams argues that writing is in an important sense always aligned. This sense of alignment, however, may be distinguished from a sense of chosen commitment,which is “conscious, active, and open.” Through a close analysis of the early work of the Scottish working-class writer James Kelman, this essay examines how an ideologically committed writer learned to refashion the dominant forms of novelistic discourse for his own political purposes. For Kelman, commitment in writing involves the recognition of the “distinction between dialogue and narrative as a summation of the political system.” This distinction was “simply another method of exclusion, of marginalizing and disenfranchising different peoples, cultures and communities,” Political commitment thus required Kelman to break successfully with the tradition of “‘working class authors’ who allowed ‘the voice’ of higher authority to control narrative, the place where the psychological drama occurred.” Copyright © 2007 by Terence Patrick Murphy and Cultural Logic, ISSN 1097-3087 Terence Patrick Murphy 2 . the relation between the language of the novelist — always in some measure an educated language, as it has to be if the full account is to be given, and the language of these newly described men and women — a familiar language, steeped in a place and in work; often different in profound as well as simple ways — and to the novelist consciously different — from the habits of education: the class, the method, the underlying sensibility. Bold's evaluation of the Kailyard (literally, cabbage patch) and its unavoidable presence in Scottish literary and cultural history illustrate the tension between "public taste" and high art, "entertainment" and serious intellect, that still gathers around these national tales. -

“…if we care to preserve even that” Scots and the question of Language Revitalization Lindsay Voigt Ling 100 – Senior Thesis December 6, 2002 I surveyed the scene: a sea of white hair and grandmotherly attire greeted me as I entered the hall. On Sundays, this was the room where I attended church. Tonight, though, a stage was set up and sixteen kilted fiddlers were tuning their instruments as the rows of old friends in the audience chatted. Not only was I the youngest person there by at least forty years, I was also the only American, so any hopes I had had of blending into the crowd were effectively squelched. A kindly “gran” pointed to an empty chair next to her and I settled in for a few hours of Scottish culture. One of the fiddlers had been elected emcee for the evening, a lady from Inverurie, not too far from Aberdeen, where the concert was being held. She stood and welcomed us all – that much I got – but for the rest of the evening my ears strained and my mind worked overtime to make sense of what this nice woman was saying. My fellow audience members hadn’t the slightest difficulty: some parts of her commentary had them nodding solemnly in agreement, others had them chortling with glee, all while I stared blankly and tried not to stick out more than I already did. “I speak English, right? And they speak English, right? Then why on earth do I not have a clue what she’s saying?!?” is about how my mental process was going at the moment. -

I’m a poet (And you c’ud mak allowances for that!) “Second Hymn to Lenin” (1932)1 Hugh MacDiarmid has never enjoyed the canonical status his acolytes consider his due. Those acolytes have dwindled in number since the 1970s and ’80s, and, as the end of the second decade of the twenty-first century approaches, there is scant evidence of live interest in the poet’s achievement anywhere in the world, least of all his native Scotland. One reason for this is that MacDiarmid, as Seamus Heaney ruefully remarked, “gave his detractors plenty to work with”;2 quite apart from indulging in cultural and political opining sufficiently provocative for the public at large to dismiss him as a crank, he published a dismaying amount of slipshod and even banal verse, mainly in his later years. -

Not really, because resurging nationalism in many European countries indicates that globalisation has still failed to create complete cultural homogeneity. The convergence thesis in cross-cultural marketing therefore appears to be wrong because consumers remain highly susceptible to stimuli that fit their cultural expectations (De Mooij). However, culture as a “whole way of life” (Williams 122) offers predictable social interactions in a post-modern world. Scotland and its quest for an independent identity in particular is a perfect exhibit for this observation. In this country conventional sociological and economic categories turn out to be too wieldy. Therefore, culture is particularly promising as an analytical approach. This paper analyses how cultural differences influence the way the creative industries work. The analysis is based on various works of David McCrone (“Being British”; Understanding Scotland), McCrone et al. (“Who Are We?”), Murray Pittock (Scottish Nationality) and Gerry Hassan (“Anatomy”; “Tales”). Main players in Scottish marketing were interviewed about their views in March 2005. The Scottish trade magazine The Drum offered further insights into the industry. Finally, campaigns were analysed to find out whether or not a ‘Scottish approach’ in marketing exists. All samples are reproduced with kind permission and copyrights remain with the designers. -

‘Maybe singing into yourself’: James Kelman, Inner Speech and Vocal Communion Scott Hames for Scott Lyall (ed.), Community in Modern Scottish Literature (Brill, 2016) http://www.brill.com/products/book/community-modern-scottish-literature Abstract The achievement of James Kelman is often linked to the recovery of communal voice and representative power. (This is particularly the case in Scottish critical contexts.) On the contrary, the social value of Kelman’s fiction lies in its wary resistance to ‘voice’ as a medium for the display of pre-given community and identity. His art subtly repudiates the ardent singing of readymade peoplehood, which often figures as a threat to the self-emancipation of the individual. This chapter explores a range of Kelman’s recent (post-2008) novels and stories in this light, with particular attention to the central importance – and the complex sociality – of un-expressed ‘inner speech’. Detailed close readings trace the unraveling of vocal solidarities premised on a bad or empty withness, and – from another angle – the pulling inward, and partial redemption, of the lyric subject’s fretful relation to external groupness and the illusion of consensus. Key insights of V.N. Volosinov (‘inner speech’), Benedict Anderson (‘unisonance’) and Étienne Balibar (on individual/collective emancipation) help to frame these explorations, which offer a new approach to Kelman’s politics of voice. Keywords James Kelman; voice; inner speech; solidarity; interiority; vernacular 1 James Kelman is the pivotal figure in the emergence of vocal democracy as a key motif of Scottish literary debate since 1979. His writing and influence are most often discussed with reference to demands and techniques for vernacular self- representation, and nearly all Kelman criticism (rightly) takes its bearings from the wider relationship between language, community and conflict.1 So strong is Kelman’s association with this terrain, we can easily lose sight of how frequently his writing runs counter to the politics and aesthetics of demotic togetherness. -

This paper focuses on the way the notions of place and space structure George Douglas Brown’s The House with the Green Shutters (1901). First the role of place in defining the identities of individuals is analysed, because “place and self are thoroughly enmeshed” (Casey 2001a, 684). The paper then focuses on the maps of power and spatial dynamics that shape the geography of the novel.
