He sang in the choir at St. Elijah Syrian Orthodox Church and briefly studied piano. He honed his writing skills with journalism courses, even working for a spell at the Ottawa Citizen. By 13, he had his own vocal group, the Bobbysoxers. He performed at every amateur night he could get to in his mother’s car, unbeknownst to his her of course. Soon after, he won a trip to New York by winning a Campbell’s soup contest that required him to spend three months collecting soup can labels. It was there his dream was solidified, he was going to make it as a singer composer; there was not a doubt in his young tenacious mind. In 1956, he convinced his parents to let him travel to Los Angeles, where he called every record company in the phone book looking for an audition. A meeting with Modern Records led to the release of Anka’s first single, “Blau-Wile Deverest Fontaine.” It was not a hit, but Anka kept plugging away, going so far to sneak into Fats Domino’s dressing room to meet the man and his manager in Ottawa. When Anka returned New York in 1957, he scored a meeting with Don Costa, the A&R man for ABC-Paramount Records.

Photograph by: Keith Munyan, Handout PODCAST: In the launch episode of the Unedited podcast, host Francois Marchand chats with pop and swing legend Paul Anka about how much the music business has changed since the 1960s, his relationship with The Beatles, Las Vegas, Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Michael Bublé and venturing into the future with his hologram company ARHT Media. If you own an old vinyl copy of Paul Anka’s 21 Golden Hits compilation from 1963, look on the back of the sleeve. There’s an address for Anka’s fan club, a PO Box (number 166) located in New York City’s Times Square. When asked what would happen should anyone send a letter or postcard to that address now, Anka bursts out laughing. “Good luck!” Anka exclaims over the phone. “I don’t even know if there’s still a building there. That was our fan club back then, and that’s how they dealt with (the mail), through PO boxes. It’s all changed. The building I was in is gone, the record company — everything’s just changed. You gotta understand that’s the way it is. März 2015, 22.00 - 24.00 Uhr (Zweitsendung) Als der Sänger Paul Anka 2005 ein Album mit dem Titel «Rock Swings!» auf den Markt brachte, auf dem er Rockstandards in ein Swingkleid steckte, war er natürlich beileibe nicht der erste, der dies machte. Trotzdem scheint es, dass seither Rocknummern auch für seriöse Jazzer salonfähig wurden. Vor allem natürlich die Musiker der jüngeren Generation, die mit Rock, Hip Hop und Dance Sounds sozialisiert wurden, erinnern sich der Stücke, die sie als Jugendliche hörten und mitsangen: Songs aus den 80er- und 90er-Jahren. Das Trio «The Bad Plus» durchforstete die halbe Rockgeschichte nach brauchbaren Vorlagen, Brad Mehldau ebenso, und so gibt es heute eine unübersehbare Fülle von swingenden Rocksongs. Mit dem Pianisten Hans Feigenwinter diskutiert Peter Bürli verschiedene Ansätze, die schweren Rockrhythmen zum Fliegen zu bringen. Wohl aus diesem Grunde entwickelte sich eine eindrucksvolle Weltkarriere, die 2005 mit seinem fantastischen Swing-Album "Rock Swings" auf einen neuen Höhepunkt zusteuerte. Dabei begann seine Laufbahn mit einer veritablen Niederlage. Anka war fünfzehn Jahre alt und schwer verliebt. Monatelang schmachtete er ein Mädchen an, ohne Erfolg. Solch großer Kummer fordert Niederschrift und so komponierte der Verzweifelte ein großes Stück "Schmaltz", wie der Amerikaner zu sagen pflegt und benannte es nach der Unnahbaren: "Diana".

Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.
