September Letter from Revd Kathryn Fitzsimons

September: a time when, as church congregations, we regroup after a Summer break. For some the Summer break has meant a change, for others a rest and for some business as usual but, there is nevertheless a sense of new beginnings at this time of year perhaps linked with the school cycle. We have the various cycles of school year, church year, financial year all continuing in the background of our lives of births deaths and anniversaries.

Two quotes spring to mind!

Firstly from the lyrics of Elton John in the Lion King:

“It's the Circle of Life and it moves us all. Through despair and hope, through faith and love Till we find our place on the path unwinding, In the Circle, the Circle of Life”

A gentle reminder that we are but a small part of the vast journey of life that surrounds us on the planet. A circle which includes animal, vegetable and mineral life, all of which are interdependent.

And secondly from the writer of Ecclesiastes who says in Chapter 3:

For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill and a time to heal; a time to break down and a time to build up; a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance; a time to throw away stones and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek and a time to lose; a time to keep and a time to throw away; a time to tear and a time to sew; a time to keep silence and a time to speak; a time to love and a time to hate; a time for war and a time for peace.

9

The writer holds all human experience in these words. Sometimes I am, perhaps we all are, tempted to remove the difficult seasons. Mourning, weeping, losing, we don’t really want those seasons. But the reality of our lives involves keeping and throwing away, mourning and dancing, weeping and laughing.

Perhaps the most challenging in our current world situation of violence is that there is a “season for war”. Is the writer implying that war is part of God’s plan? I think not. It is rather that just as harvest follows the planting of crops, war is a consequence of greed, abuse of power, selfishness and lack of concern for our fellow human beings.

So can we ensure the season for peace? There’s no guarantee but the faith and love Elton John talks of are present in the arms of Jesus on the Cross. Arms spread out to draw us closer to the Prince of Peace; arms spread out as a sign of hope for the world.

With love and prayers for wherever you find yourself in the seasons of life. Kathryn

Ben Heath, a long standing member of St John's congregation, died peacefully in hospital early on the Sunday morning of 7 August.

His funeral took place on Wednesday 17 August and was followed by a burial at Whinmoor.

Our condolences to Barbara, his wife and the family.

Prayer

Earlier in the year, I held some sessions on different ways of praying.

One or two people have said they would like to explore further the practice known as contemplative prayer. Please let me know if this is something that interests you.

THORNER NEWS

Once again, many thanks to all our many friends from Oakwood Church, Lidgett Park and from the villages of Thorner and Shadwell and the rest of the Leeds North and East Circuit who have supported our fundraising events during the last Connexional year.

Our last event, the July Summer Fayre, was for our own church funds; this was a great success, held in the morning as we did last year. We were blessed with lovely weather enabling us to have tables for coffee outside so folk could enjoy our lovely enclosed walled garden at its best. Many thanks to all who came, it was lovely to see you. We raised over £364.00. This wonderful total would have been impossible without your loyal support. Thank You!!!

Our next coffee morning, in aid of St Gemma's Hospice, will be held on Saturday 17 September from 10.00 - 12.00 . We will be having our usual cake stall, bric-a-brac stall and our famous bacon butties so do join us if you can and help us raise a lot of money for this very worthwhile cause.

Please make a note in your diaries of our Autumn Fayre which will take place on Saturday 19 November from 10.00 to 12.00. All the usual stalls will be here, along with extra items running up to Christmas.

It just remains for us here in Thorner to wish you all a very blessed new Connexional year.

Methodist Church Resolution as Read Out in Church After the European Union Referendum

As a result of the referendum on 23 June 2016, the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. In this time of very significant change and uncertainty there is a need for leadership which seeks the common good and encourages people to work together, to respect one another and to uphold the dignity of all.

The 2016 Annual Conference of the Methodist Church passed a resolution containing the following text:

The Methodist Conference believes that the British Isles are enriched by diversity and celebrates the contribution made by those who have come from other parts of the world.

The Christian tradition calls for respect, tolerance, love of neighbour and hospitality to the stranger. All bear the responsibility of speaking and acting for healing, reconciliation, and mutual respect.

The Methodist Conference abhors and deeply regrets those actions and words which incite hatred and lead to the victimisation of groups within society and notes with concern that such actions and words have been normalised in recent public discourse. Believing that racism is a denial of the gospel and that to stay silent when others are abused is to collude with those who seek to promote hatred and division, the Methodist Conference calls:

° on the Methodist people to challenge racism and discrimination. ° for a political debate which neither demonises any nor leaves the vulnerable (the foreigner, the immigrant and refugee) in danger of victimisation. ° on political leaders to work together for the good of the whole community putting the needs of the nation before party politics. ° on all those in positions of power and authority to hear the voices of those who have been marginalised and alienated and to respond to them in ways which offer real hope for the future. 18

Statement from Archbishops on EU Referendum Result 24 June 2016

On Thursday 23 June, millions of people from across the United Kingdom voted in the Referendum and a majority expressed a desire that Britain's future is to be outside the European Union.

The outcome of this referendum has been determined by the people of this country. It is now the responsibility of the Government, with the support of Parliament, to take full account of the outcome of the referendum and, in the light of this, decide upon the next steps. This morning, the Prime Minister David Cameron has offered a framework for when this process might formally begin.

The vote to withdraw from the European Union means that now we must all reimagine both what it means to be the United Kingdom in an interdependent world and what values and virtues should shape and guide our relationships with others.

As citizens of the United Kingdom, whatever our views during the referendum campaign, we must now unite in a common task to build a generous and forward looking country, contributing to human flourishing around the world. We must remain hospitable and compassionate, builders of bridges and not barriers. Many of those living among us and alongside us as neighbours, friends and work colleagues come from overseas and some will feel a deep sense of insecurity. We must respond by offering reassurance, by cherishing our wonderfully diverse society and by affirming the unique contribution of each and every one.

The referendum campaign has been vigorous and at times has caused hurt to those on one side or the other. We must therefore act with humility and courage - being true to the principles that make the very best of our nation. Unity, hope and generosity will enable us to overcome the period of transition that will now happen, and to emerge confident and successful. The opportunities and challenges that face us as a nation and as global citizens are too significant for us to settle for less.

As those who hope and trust in the living God, let us pray for all our leaders, especially for Prime Minister David Cameron in his remaining months in office. We also pray for leaders across Europe and around the world as they face this dramatic change. Let us pray especially that we may go forward to build a good United Kingdom that, though relating to the rest of Europe in a new way, will play its part amongst the nations in the pursuit of the common good throughout the world. 19

OAKWOOD LUNCHEON CLUB

Luncheon Club has now been meeting every Thursday in term time, from 12.00 to around 13.30 in the Church Hall, for over 30 years and it's still going strong, albeit a little different from when it first started when it was called Good Neighbour Scheme.

It couldn’t run without our dedicated helpers who set up, work in the kitchen, serve the meals and clear away, stack the chairs and put the tables away. Then there are the people who transport most of the members who cannot get to Luncheon Club by themselves. Our small team of volunteer drivers do a fantastic job.

We serve a two course lunch, tea/coffee and biscuits for £5.00. Every member receives a birthday card. We have a Christmas party and invite our volunteers to join us. We then go into the sanctuary and s ing carols, led by George or Ann. Margaret Burgess plays the piano and we have a wonderful time, getting us ready for the Christmas celebrations.

There are cards and jams to purchase. The profits of these go to charity. We also have book and magazine exchange, which is free.

We are always looking for new members. Over the past few months we have lost a number of members and gained new members. If you are over 60 and would like to join us, or would like to know more, please get in touch with either myself or Ann.

Transport is available at no extra cost, for people who live in the Oakwood/Roundhay area. All are welcome.

We take pride in being a caring and friendly group of like minded people and this is what Oakwood Luncheon Club has become. So why not get in touch and give us a try. You will be made very welcome.

We are looking for new drivers, so if you would like to help out either transporting one way or two, just get in touch with either of us (telephone numbers below). This would, indeed, be a great help. Thank you.

STRAWBERRY TEA GARDEN PARTY - SUNDAY 10 JULY

Thank you to everyone who came along to support this annual event in aid of some of the most vulnerable children in England and Wales.

As usual we were blessed by offers of help - baking, setting up in the kitchen, preparing food, serving and clearing tables, manning stalls and weary folk putting everything away at the end!

Sue and Sarah busy in Table Number 5 the kitchen! enjoying themselves!

The weather forecast hadn't been good so we were prepared to move indoors. The sun shone for most of the time but we did have a downpour near the end of the proceedings - in a rush tablecloths were removed, furniture dismantled and everyone congregated in the New Room.

You may remember it was the day of the Wimbledon Men's Final and Andy Murray was playing. Technology is marvellous, isn't it? To everyone's delight, George set a laptop and a screen up, enabling us to cheer Andy on and watch him win again!

Below is a rundown of the proceeds of the event and the collection combined:

P L E A S E !

At the moment I am producing The Broadcast and the Weekly Notices which I said I would do for an interim period until someone volunteered to take over the Weekly Notices.

It would be great if someone could come forward to explore what the job entails and then, maybe, start producing the Weekly Notices, perhaps from the beginning of October or November.

Obviously, if you pick up the Notices each week you will see what they contain. Information for services is mostly provided by The Plan, copies of which are always available in the porch and include Ministers/Preachers etc). Events information is available in the current Broadcast and via email from regular contributors.

Please consider doing this job. The Notices are a useful tool for keeping people up-to-date with events and act as a reminder about events which they may have read about in The Broadcast.

Interested?

Then please ring me on 0113 8085703 or email [email protected] for more information.

Many thanks - Lynda P

COULD THIS BE YOU?

Could you spare a little time to help some younger folk? They're keen to learn, love games and fun and also like a joke. Many Guides are feeling rather sad today. If no-one else comes forward, their unit may close, No weekly meetings to enjoy, or outings out and about. They'll miss the games they love to play and all the things they learn, And as for younger sisters - they'll never get a turn. No special skills are needed - just time and patience too. There's a really friendly District team to show you what to do. "But where have all the Guides gone?" I'm sure you want to know. "Those maiden aunts and dear old folks who did it years ago?" Those people aren't around these days, It's down to me and you, To give our time, make lots of friends and help the youngsters too. It's all too easy just to sit and hope for someone new, But Guides today are run by people just like YOU!

We meet on a Tuesday evening at Church, term time only, from 19.00 to 20.30.

If you think you could help out or you would like more information about our guide unit, please contact me:

Carol Massey, [email protected] or telephone 0113 2823651.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Carol Massey Guide Leader and District Commissioner

B i g Q u e s t i o n s

As a church we think it is important to make space for people to ask questions about life and faith. You may have questions about life at the moment – where are things going? What’s next for me? Or you may have questions about Christian faith which you just never had chance to ask? Perhaps you would simply like to have time to think about the basics of faith in a new way?

For a number of years at Oakwood Church we have offered the ‘Start’ course as a way to explore these questions. There are six 90 minute evening sessions which give space for reflection and conversation about life and faith.

There is a booklet and a DVD which provides an introduction to the Christian faith and presents some ways to reflect on life, though we can spend time on whatever concerns and questions the group comes up with. Two groups have completed the course already and feedback has been positive and encouraging . There’s no pressure to come to any particular decision about your questions through the course. It can simply be a real gift to yourself to put aside the time to think through life and faith in a fresh way.

If you want to know more, or are interested in booking a place, then please get in touch with me soon.

Thanks, George Bailey Tel 0113 2662066 or email: [email protected]

The Start course will be running on Tuesday evenings, 19.39 to 21.00, beginning on 4 October at

Sorry for the delay in letting you know the final amount raised at the above event.

With a wide variety of acts (ballet, comedy, singing, instrumental performances, poetry and drama) by the very young to the not so old, the concert was enjoyed by an appreciative audience.

We're pleased to say another wonderful team effort and another amazing fundraising result realised £1,021 for Church funds.

Our grateful thanks to Sara Horner, the producer, the performers, those who organised the furniture, ran the tuck shop, those who baked and those who prepared, set up and served the refreshments.

Lastly, a huge thanks to you, the audience, for being so appreciative of all the work put in by the performers and for helping us to raise such a fantastic amount.

STAMPS FOR

Used stamps can h elp to train these amazing dogs Thank you for saving stamps. Please put them in the orange folders in the New Room, at the back of Church and in the Hall entrance (or drop them off at 83 North Lane). The money raised from these stamps goes to providing training for a dog, which will bring more security and friendship to a deaf person. We can always do with more stamps, so if you could collect them, it would raise more money! It costs you nothing but can make life easier for a deaf person.

Thank you all again - Martin Shipley
