Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 r LIBRARY Summary Recent analysis of early modern spiritual diaries and autobiographies has tended to focus on ‘self-fashioning’ - how authors used their texts to create their own identity - but little interest has been shown in the degree of variation present in this form of writing and how the various identities related to one another once created. If anything, scholars have been reluctant to admit that there are any notable differences between such texts, instead preferring to uncover the ‘pattern’ that all spiritual relations follow. Through a study of texts by seventeenth-century English Puritans this thesis argues that a definite degree of individuality is present within each account. Even though common themes, such as the need for assurance and a belief in mankind’s inherent depravity, may be found, a more detailed consideration reveals subtle, yet important variations. My main aim has not been to uncover new, previously unstudied, spiritual autobiographies, but to examine new possibilities for widely-read writings, such as John Bunyan’s Grace Abounding and George Trosse’s Life. Nevertheless, discussions of little-known texts such as Cicely Johnson’sFanatical Reveries and Rose Thurgood’s Lecture o f Repentance have also proved fruitful. Somewhat tempering this emphasis on individuality is the central discussion of the influences on the composition of these works. Here it is argued that, despite the seemingly private nature of some accounts, spiritual diaries and autobiographies played a vital role in communal life and were generally intended to be read by an audience of some description - even if only family and friends. It was a Sunday when he made good his escape, and in the providence of God, he happened to pass by St. Antholin’s Church, a hotbed of Puritan radicalism, where the Puritan preacher Thomas Foxley was speaking that day on “the duty of servants to masters.” Seeing a crowd of people going into the church, Kiffin decided to join them. Never having heard the plain preaching of a Puritan before, he was deeply convicted by what he heard and was convinced that Foxley’s sermon was intentionally aimed at him. The resignation of the General Secretary, the Rev. H. Sellers, on his leaving Ilford for Redditch, was accepted with regret; members were glad to hear that the Rev. E.W. Dawe was willing to serve in this capacity, and elected him to the office. The meeting also accepted with regret the resignation of Dr. R. S. Paul, Associate Editor of these Transactions, and expressed its best wishes for his future work as he goes to represent Congre­ gationalism in a wider sphere at the Ecumenical Institute at Bossey. The other officers were re-elected, with thanks for their continued services, together with those of Mr. Sellers and Dr. Paul. Congregationalists in this country, and especially those interested in our history, have welcomed the return from Grahamstown to this country of Dr. Horton Davies, now Senior Lecturer in Church History at Mansfield and Regent's Park Colleges, Oxford. Downame was also known for his role in publishing two of the most popular theological manuals: Sir Henry Finch’s The Summe of Sacred Divinitie (1620), which consisted of a much more expanded version of Finch’s earlier Sacred Doctrine (1613), and Archbishop James Ussher’s A Body of Divinitie (1645), which was published from rough manuscripts and without Ussher’s consent, having been intended for private use.2 Downame also had a role in codifying the Westminster annotations on the Bible, being one of a few city ministers to work on the project, though he never sat at the Westminster Assembly.3 Downame’s older brother, 1 Various historians from the seventeenth century to the present have spelled Downame’s name differently (either Downame or Downham). Jackson Excerpt More information INTRODUCTION Historians may know that sometime in the seventeenth century the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes debated John Bramhall, Bishop of Derry. But where and what did they debate? And why did they debate the issues they did? It is not difficult to find brief descriptions or summaries of their public debate on free-will; this book provides the first comprehensive account not only of that debate, but also of their private quarrel and hostile relations during both the Wars of the Three Kingdoms and Interregnum. Hobbes and Bramhall argued about much more than ‘liberty’ and ‘necessity’ (free-will and determinism), and the following account offers a detailed historical expla- nation of their debating those and other issues. By situating their long and acrimonious, private and public, dispute within its contemporary context we may come to view the whole quarrel as a by-product or collateral intel- lectual skirmish of those rebellions and wars in the British Isles. We can also come to understand exactly what stakes they were playing for: what would a victory in the dispute mean to themselves, their friends and their audience? Although the clash of arms in their homeland was quite destructive, it was also productive of such contests of wit as the uncivil war of words between Hobbes and Bramhall that began across the Channel. OHN BRIDGEMAN was admitted to the rectory of Wigan on the 21st of January, 1615-16. JHe was the eldest son of Mr. Thomas Bridgeman of Greenway, otherwise called Spyre Park, near Exeter, in the county of Devon, and grandson of Mr. Edward Bridgeman, sheriff of the city and county of Exeter for the year 1562-3.1 John Bridgeman was born at Exeter, in Cookrow Street, and christened at the church of St. Petrok's in that city, in the paro- chial register of which is the following entry : " the seconde of November, A.D. 1597, John Bridgman, the son of Thomas Bridgman, was baptized."     EDITORIAL HE Editors of these Transactions apologize for the fact that no number has appeared since that bearing the date January 1952. T Members of our Society who attended the Annual Meeting on 14 May 1952 will know that our finances were then shown to be in a parlous state and that for the time being it was not possible to issue further Transactions. At the Annual Meeting held on 20 May 1953 the Rev. C. E. Surman, who for twelve months had acted as Treasurer, was able to report that the considerable sum of money which had been found to be owing to the Society had been recovered. For their labours during a long period in what has been a most difficult and distressing situation, and for their eventual success in restoring to the Society the sound financial basis which it ought never to have lost, we record most grateful acknowledgement to Mr. Surman and to the Chairman of Committee, the Rev. R. F. G. Calder. The address at our Annual Meeting this year was delivered by Dr. R. Tudur Jones, Vice-Principal of Bala-Bangor Independent College. Dr. Jones is an authority on that firebrand and " metropolitan of the itinerants ", Vavasor Powell, for a thesis upon whom he was awarded a D. Phil. by the University of Oxford; and from his special knowledge of the man and his interests he read the paper entitled "Vavasor Powell and the Protectorate" printed within. All present were impressed by the lecturer's learning and also charmed by the lightness with which he wore it and by his flashes of Celtic humour.
