  • With a Well-Received First-Crop of Yearlings for Heeraat, Mickley Stud Is Looking Forward to the Stallion’S Runners Hitting the Track in the Spring
Here he comes With a well-received first-crop of yearlings for Heeraat, Mickley Stud is looking forward to the stallion’s runners hitting the track in the spring. Aisling Crowe chats with Richard Kent 48 mickley stud Photo by Emma Berry LL BOODSTOCK investment IS HIGH RISK, but backing a new stallion is at the very top of the “beware” pyramid and should come with a government health warning.A Launching a new stallion onto the market takes nerves of steel, and particularly so when the stud in question is not perhaps located in the more fashionable enclaves of the thoroughbred world and the sire does not command the astronomical covering fee that attracts the attention, and mares, of the industry’s influencers. The process is fraught with as much risk as that of a space launch. Luckily, Richard Kent of Mickley Stud possesses the pedigree, experience and nous which have helped him guide the first three seasons of Heeraat toward lift-off, the son of Dark Angel due to have his first runners next spring, The process is also aided by Heeraat himself, a talented sprinter from a fast family, and by a sire who is establishing himself as a dominant force in the breed. “It has taken 25 years to try and understand how to get a stallion’s career going and to develop the confidence to do it,” confides the Cork-born Kent who runs the stud in Shropshire with his partner Claire Lloyd. “I spoke to Tony O’Callaghan about how he had achieved success with Danetime, Kodiac, and now Society Rock and he said you just have to keep working away, even though you can be unlucky and get average horses until one day the good ones come along.” Danetime and Kodiac began life at similar fees to the £4,000 that Heeraat has stood at for his first three seasons.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2020 PATIENCE THE ESSENCE AS HALL OF FAME TRAINER GARY JONES PASSES AWAY AT 76 QUALITY COMES THROUGH by Bill Finley Trainer Gary Jones, who was inducted into the United States Racing Hall of Fame in 2014, passed away Sunday at his home in Del Mar, California. His son, trainer Marty Jones, said his father had been in hospice care and died of natural causes. He was 76. AHe was an amazing person, first and foremost,@ his son said. • John Oxx by Donn Mcclean
John Oxx By Donn McClean Irish Oaks day 1960, a young boy, just days short of his 10th birthday, climbs the stand at The Curragh. It is the old stand on the far side of the winning post, the one where the `ordinary' folk tend to congregate, and the balcony at the top is packed, but John Oxx is able to squeeze and squirm his way through the bodies to gain a good vantage point at the front. There are major benefits to being 10. John's father, also John, has two fillies in the Oaks, Azurine and Lynchris, but it is Lynchris who is the focus of the boy's interest. Bought by his father himself, she has the potential to be top class, and she has a favourite's chance of landing a first Irish Oaks, a first Classic, for trainer John Oxx. It is a gloomy day, and young John peers intently up the straight into the murk, no big screen in front of him, no small screens behind him, just a pair of naked eyes and a heart that races. And then he sees her, first a grey blur then a vivid picture of grace, Lynchris and Australian Bill Williamson emerging from the mist, clear of their field. Truth be told, the youngster doesn't see another horse, and Lynchris has an easy six lengths in hand at the line. Some 48 years on, and the Oxx association with the Irish Oaks remains constant. Lynchris was the first of four winners of the Classic for Oxx senior and, although there was a 30-year lull without an official Oxx Oaks victory after Pampalina's win in 1967, normal service was resumed with victory for Ebadiyla in 1997, and continued when Winona landed the Classic the following year.

  • Saxon Warrior’S Pedigree
036_OctNov19_SaxonWarrior.qxp_Layout 1 23/10/19 11:48 am Page 36 October/November 2019 36 STUD NEWS by Kristen Manning BREEDING GIANTS dominate Saxon Warrior’s pedigree EEP Impact, Galileo (IRE) and Danehill (USA) are three of the true heavyweights Dof international breeding. They have sired a total of 793 stakes winners, 213 of those Gr.1 winners, and in James Bester’s words they are “the three Colossi that bestride the world of turf”. As indicated by their impressive strike rates; Deep Impact’s winners-to-runners ratio is sitting on an outstanding 74.8% with 10.5% stakes winners; Galileo 68.4% and 14.5%, Danehill 77.2% and 17.9%. Now that is influence. “Being a son of Sunday Silence (Halo), Deep Impact represents the most influential dynasty in Japanese racing and breeding history,” Bester said. “While Sadler’s Wells and his son Galileo are the most influential sire/son combination in European racing and breeding history. And it follows that Danzig and son Danehill have been the most influential force in the history of Australian racing and breeding.” Which is what makes the pedigree of Coolmore Stud’s new shuttler Saxon Warrior (JPN) so exciting. His sire is Deep Impact, his dam Maybe is by Galileo and his second dam Sumora is by Danehill. There are no weak links in the breeding of this horse who also has family, performance and type on his side. The winner of four of his nine starts for the Aidan O’Brien stable, Saxon Warrior hit the ground running, swamping his rivals from the rear in a maiden mile at the Curragh in August 2017.
