Edited extracts prepared by Editor of Radwinter Times Double glazed doors security weakness The rise of uPVC and other double glazed doors has introduced a security weakness that is being exploited by burglars. The problem is the lock. Euro cylinder locks can be snapped, using simple DIY tools, in a matter of seconds. In December 2012 West Yorkshire Police said 27 per cent of burglaries in the region had been committed using this technique. There is a simple solution– replace the lock with a Snap Secure euro cylinder lock, which has been designed and developed specifically to counter lock snapping.” Avocet’s ABS Snap Secure lock is accredited to British Standard TS007 retro-fit euro cylinder which was developed in response to the rise in lock snapping. The lock has passed the new SS312 Sold Secure Diamond standard, and is approved by Secured by Design, a Master Locksmiths Association (MLA). It features a patented system that guarantees a total barrier against forced entry even if the lock is snapped and it also allows the door to be opened and locked using the key from the inside.

  • Saffron Walden and Villages Team Ministry
Saffron Walden and Villages Team Ministry Profile 2020 i September 2020 Thank you for taking the time to look at our Team Profile. We completed this in early March 2020 just before COVID-19 changed all our lives. We hope you will enjoy finding out more about our vibrant town and village ministries. During lockdown we have taken to Zoom and the telephone to keep in touch with each other and to continue to worship God together. You will find lots of information about our Church at Home and our online services on www.stmaryssaffronwalden.org and our village websites (which can be reached from the relevant pages of the profile). We have established a Pastoral Support team to help the vulnerable and isolating members of our congregation with shopping, collection of prescriptions and providing a listening ear. Many of our members have signed up to help as an NHS Volunteer, at the local foodbanks and with local support initiatives. We started reopening our churches in July in accordance with the current guidelines and are now holding a limited number of services in all the churches in the team. Many of our services are livestreamed and we are continuing to provide ministry online as well as face to face. We pray that as you discover more about us that you will feel God’s prompting. If it seems that this might be the ministry for you, please contact Archdeacon Robin King for a discussion. We hope that we will not need to wait too long to welcome our next Team Rector but we know that the timing is in God’s hands.

  • Saffron Walden Is the Largest Town in the District, and the Administrative and Commercial Centre
Market Saffron Walden Town General Description: Saffron Walden is the largest town in the District, and the administrative and commercial centre. This very attractive town is one of the finest preserved examples of a medieval market town with a wealth of listed buildings in a town centre which is a long-standing conservation area. The historic layout of the town centre results in problems with traffic flow through and around it particularly in peak times but because of the built-up nature of the town and its quality there is no scope to alleviate this by any alternative routing. The town is situated in the attractive rolling landscape of the River Cam, two miles east of the main road and rail corridor between London (about 40 miles) and Cambridge (about 15 miles). The Jacobean mansion of Audley End and its associated parkland is immediately to the west of the town. The current character and scale of the town is doubtless influenced by the fact that the station is some distance from the town and it does not have ready access to the M11, despite its proximity (see below). However, the town has seen significant residential development during the last 30 years with new estates on greenfield sites, especially on its southern side, and the recycling and intensification of other uses. It remains the subject of on-going pressure for further such development on both brownfield and greenfield sites. The Further Preferred Options Consultation document for the Core Strategy suggested a scale of growth of around 250 homes for Saffron Walden.

  • Wimbish Through the Centuries
WIMBISH THROUGH THE CENTURIES ISABEL WISEMAN 1954 INTRODUCTION ODAY we have grown so used to thinking of progress as emanating Tfrom the large centres of population — our cities and towns — that we are apt to forget that until comparatively recent times Britain was mainly a country of villages, always excepting on, Cobbett’s “great wen” It was in the villages, in the country seats dominating them, plans (political and otherwise) were often evolved. Perhaps reason why we are apt to overlook these facts is the absence village records. A town, with its own local government organisation, usually possesses a nucleus of Minute Books, Account Books other archives, from which it is fairly easy for the historian to trace its development. But the first task of the village historian is discover and bring together scattered records, which are often disjointed and lacking continuity. In her book on Wimbish Through the Centuries Miss Wiseman has been fortunate in her discovery of such records, the reward of much able and painstaking work. A general historical background, sufficient for the purpose, provides continuity, and to this background are fitted illustrative Wimbish records. Broadoaks, Tiptofts, Pinkneys, Hodges, Thunderley, Little Stonards — the very names have a fascination, and all in turn contribute stories. Perhaps the most fascinating account in the book comes from Broadoaks, which under the Wisemans in Elizabeth’s sreign became headquarters of the Jesuit priest, Father John Gerard, whose biography is quoted, giving a detailed description of his ventures and concealment in the Broadoaks hiding during a four-days search for him. Anyone interested in the devotion and scorn of danger to their lives shown by many of the Jesuits would amply repaid for acquiring a copy of Wimbish through the Centuries.

He is a detective based in the south of Sicily. I was first attracted by the opening titles, where a plane (or drone) flies over the area, Ragusa, Punta Secca, Modica and Scicli in particular. Kathleen Huey and I booked a package holiday staying in Scicli (pronounced Sheekley) which is home to the fictional Police Station. Our hotel was conveniently placed in the centre of town and we enjoyed spotting the locations we had seen on TV. We used the local bus and train and hired a car for a few days to explore further afield. One morning our hotel host told us there was a film crew in town so we walked round to the ‘Police Station’ The main street was cordoned off with lots of screens and cameras. We managed to peep through the screens to the steps, where all the action was taking place. A real ‘baddie’ in a blue shirt was being dragged up the steps into the Police Station. We decided we would recognise the episode when it eventually reached the British TV screens!
