1 Ranch Houses in Georgia: A Guide to House Types (Sub-Types) May 2010 Richard Cloues, Ph.D. 2 Ranch Houses in Georgia come in a wide variety – as seen here in these pictures of Ranch Houses in just one small community. 3 Their diversity is extreme -- more so, perhaps, than any other kind of historic house -- and sometimes perplexing. 4 And yet there are recurring patterns of underlying forms as well as outward appearances. 5 The outward appearances are indicative of different architectural styles. 6 The underlying forms of Ranch Houses reveal something quite different: variations on the basic Ranch House type that might be considered sub-types. 7 This presentation is about house types -- more precisely, Ranch House sub-types. (A complementary presentation on our website discusses the various architectural styles of Ranch Houses in Georgia.) 8 It builds upon the historic house types first identified in our 1991 Georgia’s Living Places report. 9 In that report, house types were defined by a seemingly simple formula: House Type equals Plan (or plan-shape) plus Height (or mass-form). A house type is sometimes called a plan-form. 10 This concept of house type is based on distinctive patterns of interior spaces and exterior forms rather than stylistic conventions. 11 Sub-types were defined as variations on fundamentally similar concepts of interior plans and exterior massing. 12 House types are especially useful when dealing with houses whose forms and floor plans rather than stylistic conventions are the sole or principal character-defining features. The architectural character of these houses literally derives from their combinations of plans and forms. -

The residential areas occupy the largest swath of the built-up portion of cities, and therefore catch the eye of the beholder above all else. Houses, houses, everywhere. Big houses, little houses, apartment houses; sterile new tract houses, picturesque Victorian houses, snug little stucco homes; gargantuan manor houses, houses tucked into leafy hillsides, and clusters of town houses. Such residential zones establish the basic tone of urban life in the metropolis. By looking at residential landscapes around the city, one can begin to capture the character of the place and its people. We can mark out five residential landscapes in the Bay Area. The oldest is the 19th century Victorian townhouse realm. The most extensive is the vast domain of single-family homes in the suburbia of the 20th century. The grandest is the carefully hidden ostentation of the rich in their estates and manor houses. The most telling for the cultural tone of the region is a middle class suburbia of a peculiar sort: the ecotopian middle landscape. The most vital, yet neglected, realms are the hotel and apartment districts, where life spills out on the streets. More than just an assemblage of buildings and styles, the character of these urban realms reflects the occupants and their class origins, the economics and organization of home- building, and larger social purposes and planning. -

The Vernacular Houses of Harlan County, Kentucky
-ABSTRACT WHAT is the vernacular ? Are some houses vernacular while others are not? Traditional definitions suggest that only those buildings that are indigenous, static and handmade can be considered vernacular. This thesis uses Harlan County, Kentucky as a case study to argue that vernacular architecture includes not only those houses that are handmade, timeless and traditional but also those houses that are industrial and mass-produced. Throughout the 19 th century Harlan County was an isolated, mountainous region where settlers built one and two-room houses from logs, a readily available material. At the turn of the century a massive coal boom began, flooding the county with people and company-built coal camp houses which were built in large quantities as cheaply as possible with milled lumber and hired help. Given traditional conceptions of the vernacular, it would have been appropriate to assume the vernacular tradition of house building ended as camp houses, those houses that were not built directly by the residents with manufactured materials, began to replace the traditional log houses. However, the research presented in this thesis concludes that many elements of form, construction and usage that were first manifest in the handmade log cabins continued to be expressed in the county’s mass-produced camp houses. These camp houses not only manifest an evolution of local building traditions but also established qualities of outside influence which in turn were embraced by the local culture.
