  • Once Upon a Time … in Santa Clarita: Tarantino Movie Opens Thursday
By: Caleb Lunetta, July 25, 2019 Once Upon a Time … In Santa Clarita: Tarantino movie opens Thursday Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino is known for his genre-defying blockbuster films that combine elements of art house, violence and comedy in his Academy Award-winning films. And the San Fernando Valley resident calls Santa Clarita “a special place,” according to local film property owners who have played host to the luminary for his latest film that debuts tonight, “Once Upon a Time … In Hollywood.” The latest installment in the Tarantino filmography follows the story of “a faded television actor and his stunt double (who) strive to achieve fame and success in the film industry during the final years of Hollywood’s Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles,” according to IMDb.com. The film features Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. Tarantino and movie fans were given a teaser trailer where the opening shot was that of Melody Ranch’s “Main Street” set. Veluzat said that the production team had been working with the studio for a couple months, from planning to setting up to filming, and for him, it was a special experience. Tarantino has filmed two of his last three movies at Melody Ranch in Newhall, according to studio manager Daniel Veluzat, and he’s praised the SCV in interviews and conversations with local residents. He really does like it here, said Veluzat, in reference to a question about why Tarantino has filmed his movies at Melody Ranch. “He calls it a special place,” he said. And on Thursday night, “Once Upon a Time” opens in theaters across the country, including the Santa Clarita Valley, featuring scenes shot at both Melody Ranch and the Saugus Speedway.

Uncertainty in the Movie Industry: Does Star Power Reduce the Terror of the Box O±ce?¤ Arthur De Vany Department of Economics Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences University of California Irvine, CA 92697 USA W. David Walls School of Economics and Finance The University of Hong Kong Pokfulam Road Hong Kong Abstract Everyone knows that the movie business is risky. But how risky is it? Do strategies exist that reduce risk? We investigate these ques- tions using a sample of over 2000 motion pictures. We discover that the movies are very risky indeed. Box-o±ce revenue dynamics are a Le'vy stable process and are asymptotically Pareto-distributed with in¯nite variance. The mean is dominated by rare blockbuster movies that are located in the far right tail. There is no typical movie be- cause box o±ce revenue outcomes do not converge to an average, they diverge over all scales. Movies with stars in them have higher revenue ¤This paper was presented at the annual meeting of the American Economic Associa- tion, New York, January 1999. • By DAVID LESER Two Years After Heath Ledger Scandalised Sections
By DAVID LESER Two years after Heath Ledger scandalised sections of middle America with his near- miraculous performance as a gay cowboy, he would light up the screen with another tour de force, this time as the lovelorn, heroin-soaked poet, Dan, in the Australian cult movie, Candy. Little known outside Australia, this film was based on a loosely autobiographical book of the same name written by Australian author, Luke Davies. In the film Ledger somehow managed to find his way inside the twisted, twilight world of the drug addict. I pull the syringe from her arm and drop it on the table and hold my thumb down over the tiny hole I’ve made. I release the tie with my other hand. Candy looks down at her arm like a child who’s relieved that the innoculation is over. Then she says, mmmm, and her facial muscles relax and she lies back on the bed and says, that is heaps better. Heaps better. Fuck oh God. Fuck fuck fuck. This is the best. Oh God, this is awesome. This was – as the New York Times commented of Ledger’s role – acting of the first order. “Ledger looks and plays the part of the scheming user exceptionally well. He’s deep in the character’s skin right from the start.” Ledger and his co-star, Abbie Cornish – who recently appeared opposite Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth: The Golden Age - had received their tutoring from an expert, a heroin addict belonging to a Sydney group called “Proud Users.” “Abbie and Heath got lots of lessons with a prosthetic arm on how to inject,” the film’s producer, Margaret Fink told Vanity Fair.

Death and Change Tracking: Wikipedia Edit Bursts Miles Lincoln ABSTRACT Bursts have been used in prior informetrics studies to predict the emergence of new fields and trends in research by looking at the occurrence of common terms throughout a body of knowledge, such as the full text of a journal. If a sudden flurry of activity in a field can be observed, it may be possible to quantify and determine to what effect this new area will take off. Having identified a new variety of burst observed in the activity on a Wikipedia page following a newsworthy event, this study took an interest in what could be predicted by visualizing these graphs, as they represent a granular, instantly updated resource that can be observed and analyzed. La Biennale di Venezia / 77th Venice International Film Festival American director Abel Ferrara awarded the Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker 2020 prize His new film Sportin’ Life to be presented Out of Competition La Biennale di Venezia and Jaeger-LeCoultre are pleased to announce that the American director Abel Ferrara (Pasolini, Bad Lieutenant, King of New York) is the recipient of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker award of the 77th Venice International Film Festival (September 2 - 12, 2020), dedicated to a personality who has made a particularly original contribution to innovation in contemporary cinema. The award ceremony for Abel Ferrara will take place on Saturday September 5th 2020 in the Sala Grande (Palazzo del Cinema) at 2 pm, before the screening Out of Competition of his new film, the documentary Sportin’ Life (Italy, 65') with Abel Ferrara, Willem Dafoe, Cristina Chiriac, Anna Ferrara, Paul Hipp, Joe Delia. With regards to this acknowledgment, the Director of the Venice Film Festival Alberto Barbera has stated: “One of the many merits of Abel Ferrara, who is widely held in esteem despite his reputation as one of the most controversial filmmakers in contemporary cinema, is his undeniable consistency and allegiance to his personal approach, inspired by the principles of independent cinema even when the director had the opportunity to work on more traditional productions. From his first low-budget films, influenced directly by the New York scene populated by immigrants, artists, musicians, students and drug addicts, through his universally recognized masterpieces – The King of New York (1990), Bad Lieutenant (1992) and Body Snatchers (1994) – to his most recent works, increasingly introspective and autobiographical, Ferrara has brought to life a personal and exclusive universe.
